Since our dogs are stuck inside due to the prolonged heat, I thought I’d publish my favorite list of indoor enrichment ideas again! Here you go! If you don’t have these items on hand now, it’s a great time to think ahead…🐾

Enrichment ideas! You can core and stuff apples with pumpkin, steamed veggies, small amounts of banana and watermelon then freeze a batch. I’ll give whole frozen carrots with some of the greens attached as they are healthy too. These are great for teething puppies. I also stuff hooves, horns and anything else I can think of like a lick mat. Put treats in muffin tins and freeze. You can put veggies inside bone broth in ice cube trays. This is a healthy snack! I freeze everything! It takes longer and it’s more engaging for our dogs. You can put tiny treats in a Snuffle Mat. Amazon also sells extra large Beef Cheek Rolls (not rawhide) which last heavy chewers a long time. I hope this helps you see how many creative ways dogs can have fun and avoid boredom which leads to destructive behavior. 🐾

I mentioned the other day that all dogs may not know how to swim. Here’s a follow up to that. With this extended heat, people are looking for any way to cool off. Here’s a guideline to water intoxication in dogs.
It’s when dogs swallow too much water in a short time. It’s rare, but this condition can lead to brain damage and can be fatal.
Signs of water intoxication are:
* vomiting
* loss of coordination (including falling over or swaying)
* bloating
* tiredness
* pale gums
To prevent water intoxication, keep an eye on your dog when they're in water. If they look like they’re swallowing too much, it’s time to go home. You can also limit their swimming to no more than five minutes at a time, giving them frequent breaks. Remember to check Water Quality if you plan to swim in Lake Erie!

It’s True! Not all dogs can swim. With the upcoming heat wave, we need to be careful with our dogs. Cooling off in a baby pool is fun, but Lake Erie can be dangerous. Have fun, but keep an eye on our furry friends. They tire easily in water. ❤️🐾❤️

The wildlife will quickly pickup all the scraps. It’s a win win! You can put tiny treats in a Snuffle Mat. Put a "dog stop" into your walk!

It’s Spring-take in the sights, sounds and smells of the world as it changes from dark to light and the sun starts to spread its warmth

One of the things people get a dog for is for companionship, this means sharing quiet times in environments that both dogs and humans enjoy together

Take a chew or a few nice treats with you on your walk and find a spot to sit and enjoy being with your dog-not only is this of value to your dog but it is of immense value to our own mental health

The focus for many people when they take their dogs out is on exercise-but this is not what a dog would tell you if he could speak

He might tell you he enjoys being with you, but also that every season brings irresistable changes and to be able to take time to enjoy them is as important as running around

We are led to believe that walks need to be about constant motion, and this is incorrect.
If you teach your dog to run after balls and rush around this becomes “normal” and creates a dog that is filled with adrenaline and this causes us to believe a dog will never pause on a walk.
The method is to find an area on a walk where you just stop, and allow your dog to look around and start to respond to the environment which will reduce the feelings of frustration that are coursing around the body if walks consist of constant movement

The focus here is to persist. Don’t try it once or twice and give in to the pressure to rush-you don’t need extra time and walks do not need to be longer-they will just include a pause which will extend with practice. The result will be a dog that is more relaxed when he returns home and the connection between you will become stronger

The benefits for

Puppies

· Puppies become overwhelmed and overstimulated very easily so a dog stop will allow them to learn about their world and allow them to think about finding a place to toilet-this is one of the biggest gripes I have heard from many puppy guardians. They take their puppies out but that they toilet as soon as they get home. While this is common it is out fault that this happens

· Short adventures where the focus is on integrating the puppy into his new world are far more beneficial than trying to rush a puppy to walk at a required speed. It is your puppy that should guide and inform you

· A puppy stop will allow your puppy to “smell the flowers”

· Helps to teach loose lead walking and REALLY helps with recall as your puppy is far more likely to connect with you

Adult dogs

Once again, I will comment on the idea that dogs are primarily with us as our companions, stopping to chew the fat is with your dog is very underrated. Exercise is good but dog stops can help with

· Stress reduction

· Encourage dogs to take in the scents of the area-dogs are perfectly able to air scent as they relax

· Give dogs time to themselves when they are out with us

· Putting halts into walks helps you to observe your dog outside your home-and this is of immense value

· If you walk with other dogs in a social group this is a great activity

Senior dogs

We often forget that older dogs can’t always walk as far as they used to.

· Putting a stop into walk helps with tired muscles and aching joints

· If you take a chew or some favourite food and present it to your dog as you stop this provides a brilliant proprioceptive activity -which is just as useful as walking and movement

· Watch as your dog gets up as this will give you a guide as to how he is coping with walks

· Do take something for your older dog to sit on so he is not forced to sit on damp grass!

Enjoy! 🐾

I have not vaccinated my dogs at all since rescue or adoption. I have run Titers with different vets as I moved. The cost is worth it. I save in the overall health of my dogs. The Titers have shown that they do not need further vaccinations. I’m also mindful what I feed, which further decreases the need for vet visits. My dogs live long healthy lives. You need to find a vet that respects your wishes and have an honest conversation. Vaccines are given to all dogs without regard to weight. So a 5 pound dog gets the same vaccine as a 90 pound dog. That doesn’t sit right with me. My senior Chihuahua was just in for a well check. My vet agrees she needs no more vaccines of any kind. She’s 4.88 pounds and is becoming more fragile. He knows I’m a responsible owner. There are so many factors to consider. We have to speak up for those who can’t. Thank you for taking the time to educate yourself. ❤️

Let’s Talk Mushrooms! They are great for your Dog…
If you decide to give your pet mushrooms as part of their diet, it is recommended that they be cooked. Cooking mushrooms allows more of the medicinal benefits of the mushrooms to be utilized!
Chitin is the same material that makes up the hard outer shell of insects and crustaceans. ( Yuck?) Very few mammals produce chitinase, the enzyme responsible for breaking down chitin. Dogs are no exception here. So Sauté away! Olive oil is best! 🐾

Synthetic aromas are largely made up of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which float through the air, are inhaled, and then enter the bloodstream. These highly popular aromatic liquids are actually chemicals, including lactones, benzene and aldehydes, all of which have been linked to birth defects, central nervous system disorders, neurological disorders, and/or allergic reactions, including eye, skin and respiratory symptoms.

🐾 Our animals often spend their days stuck inside our homes, unable to get away from these airborne pollutants; if your goal is to remove damaging chemicals from your family’s living environment, the first place to start is by unplugging plug-ins.

Experts warn us each year that it’ll be an especially bad year for ticks. They also share the reminder that the disease incidence is becoming endemic in new areas.
If your dog plays in wooded areas, once in a while he’ll probably pick up a tick or two … even if you use prevention. That’s because even the toxic pharmaceutical products aren’t 100% tick proof.
The good news is that Lyme and other tick-borne diseases aren’t transmitted immediately. So, if you get ticks off your dog within 24 to 36 hours of a tick bite, he’s unlikely to get infected. That means it’s really important to check your dog for ticks and remove them quickly.
REMOVE TICKS FROM YOUR DOG IN 5 STEPS
1. Make sure you can easily see the tick: Part your dog’s hair around the tick with your fingers.
2. Grab hold of the tick: Place the tweezers around the tick, as close as you can get to the skin. Don’t twist or jerk the tick. If using a tick removal tool (like the Tick Key) place the large opening over the tick as close to the skin as you can. Slide the tool until the tick is in the narrow slot at the end.
3. Pull out the tick: Gently pull the tweezers upwards with steady hands. Add pressure until the tick lets you pull it away from the skin. If you’re using a tick removal tool, keep sliding the tick key in the same direction, along the skin. The tick will come out including the head and mouth.
4. Clean the area: Clean the bite area and your hands with rubbing alcohol, iodine, or soap and water.
5. Get rid of the tick: Dispose of the tick by killing it in alcohol … or wrap it in tape and flush it down the toilet. If you’re concerned about tick disease, save the tick in alcohol for testing.
WHAT DO YOU DO IF A TICK’S HEAD IS STILL IN YOUR DOG?
Don’t worry, clean the area and the head will work its way out eventually.
