Name: Gilly “Gilly Boy”
Breed: Cane Corso, American Staffordshire, Mastiff mix
Age: ~ 2years
Size: 65 pounds of love
Good with: Adults, children of all ages. Not assessed with cats. Dogs must be submissive.

Our family adopted Gilly from Charlotte Animal Care & Control in February 2024, he was an owner surrender for relocation in January 2024. He was neutered and given all vaccinations and is currently UTD. Gilly did have a cherry eye which was surgical removed by the shelter and has no recurrence with us.
He is obedient to his owners as he always responds to his name when called, knows simple commands such as “sit,” “stay,” “stop,” “get down,” “lay down,” “come,” “cage,” etc. He is potty trained and never once had an accident in our home. He knows to use a bell at the door to ask to go outside. He is also crate trained and has been left for 9-10 hours with no accidents.
Gilly is a WONDERFUL dog to have by your side. Once he knows you are his family, nothing else matters. This guy was trained with a wireless fence and has always stayed close to the house. When visitors arrive, he waits patiently while wagging his tail. He LOVES outside and will just relax in the sun while sometimes chasing the bees. If you are in the mood to lay on the couch all day, then so is he. If you plan on working outside or going out for a stroll, then he will too. All while standing right by your side. He loves to be pet/scratched, especially around the ears and neck, and will do anything for a treat. He loves to play with stuffed animals, chew bones (really STRONG bones), and playing fetch.

PLACED WITH POUND HOUNDS RESCUE

JAX HAS BEEN RELISTED

TO BE KILLED 07/16/2021

Poor baby Jax! Accused by his owner of the most grievous thing, yet still a youngster, not knowing the gravity of what he has done. Now, Jax is in danger of losing his life. This is what humans do to dogs. People get them and don’t teach them. They are very much like kids, they need to be told what is acceptable and what isn’t. If you don’t know how to be a parent, don’t get a dog. We don’t know what happened in Jax’s home. Jax is a fearful young dog, he is scared at the ACC, and is not very sociable. His expression is heartbreaking, and we wish he could tell us his side of the story. Frequently, dogs bite when signals are crossed. Jax might have warned his owner but was ignored, or his owner didn’t understand. Jax deserves a chance with an understanding and experience human who would know how to train him and to gain his trust. Please help Jax find his angel. Please share Jax.

SAFER ASSESSMENT:
Date of assessment: 27-Jun-2021

BEHAVIOR:

Summary: Due to the nature and severity of Jax's bite history, he is not a candidate for a handling assessment at this time.

DOG-DOG:

FUN FACTS:

INTAKE BEHAVIOR:
Date of intake: 18-Jun-2021

MEDICAL BEHAVIOR:
Date of initial: 19-Jun-2021
Summary: Tense, trembling

ENERGY LEVEL: We have limited history on Jax so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. However, he is a young, enthusiastic dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm.

IN SHELTER OBSERVATIONS:

6/27: Jax has been easily leashed and removed from his kennel for walks with his caretakers. He has not displayed social behavior toward handlers, and often spends his time sniffing and exploring his surroundings. He has at time appeared fearful of new settings in the care centers, cowering away and avoiding.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: New Hope Only

Recommendations:

No children (under 13)
Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:

No children: Due to Jax's multiple bite history, we recommend an adult only home.

Place with a New Hope partner: Due to multiple bite history and level of bites (resulting in stitches), the behavior department recommends Jax be placed with a New Hope placement partner who is able to provide an experienced adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training only is advised when introducing Jax to new and unfamiliar situations. Consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended for guidance to safely manage/modify any behavior Jax presents with outside of the care centers.

Potential challenges:

Fearful/potential for defensive aggression
Multiple-bite history/risk of future aggression
Bite history (human)
Low threshold for arousal

Potential challenges comments:

Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Jax is reported to have bitten a person who entered his home, with no further details. He has appeared fearful of some new surroundings in the care center and will jump or cower away from large or moving objects. Jax should never be forced to interact, and should always be given the opportunity to walk away from situations or people he finds uncomfortable. Please see handout on Fearful and Defensive Aggression.

Multiple bite history/risk of future aggression: According to Jax's previous owner, he has escalated to biting in multiple settings and situations (please see BITE HISTORY). This behavior may be likely to occur in the future, and will need careful management to work toward reducing triggers for Jax to ensure safety in a new home. Please see our handout on Bite History and Potential for Future Aggression.

Low threshold for arousal: Jax was noted to bite his previous owner after becoming overly excitable during mealtime (jumping up and biting the owner's arm). He may have a low threshold for arousal, requiring management guidance to learn how to appropriately channel his energy when overstimulated. Please see handout on Arousal.

TO BE KILLED - 5/21/2021

Dolly's foster writes: If you are looking for a sweet, snuggly, easygoing gal, Dolly is the dog for you. Dolly is the perfect package: easy to train, easy to love, and hard to refuse when she turns on the puppy-eyed charm. She behaves well around people, kids, and other animals, and would be a great fit for any household. She occasionally likes to jump up for kisses when excited, but has gotten much better with this over time. She is crate-trained, house-trained, and knows basic commands (sit, stay) but is so trainable that she could easily learn more. A polite and quiet lady, the loudest things about her are her snuffly snores. She has affectionately been nicknamed "the little croissant" for the way she loves to curl up beside her favorite people. Dolly's favorite things in the world are downward dog stretches, ear scratches, long naps, fetch sessions, crunchy snacks, and any toy that she can endlessly gnaw on. She makes a great work-from-home colleague, running partner, and cuddle buddy. Scoop up this sweet lady today!

FUN FACTS:

INTAKE BEHAVIOR:

MEDICAL BEHAVIOR:

ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Dolly so we cannot be certain of her behavior in a home environment. However, she is a young, enthusiastic, social dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep her engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct her energy and enthusiasm.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: New Hope Only

Recommendations:

No children (under 13)
Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:

No children (under 13): Due to Dolly's low threshold for arousal and propensity to direct frustration onto handlers, we feel as though she would be best set up to succeed if placed into an adult only home environment.

Place with a New Hope partner: Due to the reports of redirecting onto owners when over-aroused combined with her overall reactivity to dogs, we feel as though Dolly would be best set up to succeed if placed with an experienced rescue partner. Guidance from a professional trainer or veterinary behaviorist is highly advised.

Potential challenges:

Basic manners/poor impulse control
Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition
On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration
Low threshold for arousal

Potential challenges comments:

Dolly jumps up a lot in a social manner. Please see handout on Basic Manners.

Dolly has been observed to react to dogs at the care center, lunging at them and barking. Her previous owner reports that she will growl and snap towards other dogs as well. Please see handout on On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration.

Dolly is reported to hard bark when hearing certain noises (door bell, blender, loud noises, etc.), she then begins to redirect her behavior onto her owners by whale eyeing, hard barking, lunging, snapping. Please consult with a professional trainer or veterinary behaviorist should these concerns present themselves in a future home environment.

REUNITED WITH FAMILY PER ACC

TO BE KILLED 05/20/2021

SHUT DOWN AND SO SCARED, puppy Bandit doesn’t even stand up to defend himself. He RETREATS AND TREMBLES IN HIS KENNEL. How his short life could have gone so wrong, we wish Bandit can tell us. The fact that his owner chose to lock him out, tells us that Bandit’s owner doesn’t know what he or she is doing, and that they never treated this puppy right in the first place. Was he being beaten? Why did his timid pup “bite” his owner? No details given regarding the bite, where, how bad, and why. Just an accusation leveled at this scared young boy. Bandit cannot tell us what happened unfortunately, and that is how some owners get away with “murder”. What we know is that this puppy has not shown any aggression towards strangers, even when he feels threatened. He just prefers to be passive, hoping the fear, or the abuse, if any, will stop. Puppy Bandit needs a miracle to get out alive. The ACC says he is suffering there, shut down, so they are sedating him. The ACC is filling up with a lot of family pets tossed out by their uncaring owners. Please help get Bandit seen. We are his only voice. Please help him find an experienced loving home with no young kids.
