RETRACTABLE LEASHES: THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE UGLY

Many of us have utilized a retractable leash at one time or another. The “freedom” for our canine to wander appeals to our desire to allow our dogs a sense of privilege and an ability to roam a bit.

This well-intentioned decision, while providing our pets with an opportunity to move a bit more freely, comes with a handful of negative potential outcomes.

Retractable leashes, some of which may extend to over 20 feet, allow dogs to significantly and quickly distance themselves from their human companion and to find themselves in dangerous situations. Many canines have darted onto busy roadways, rushed at other canines and unsuspecting pedestrians and have been attacked by wildlife.

In order to function properly and to retract into a small housing, these leashes are constructed from thinner cord materials known to snap under sudden and intense pressure. While the lower section of the retractable leash may appear to be of significant thickness, the portion that retracts into the handle needs to be significantly thinner. In addition to allowing one’s dog to run loose, there have been injuries reported to dog-walkers as a result of the recoil of the broken leash. There have been a number of law suits filed as a byproduct of some of these injuries.

Should an aggressive dog approach, it is often difficult to retract the leash and bring your dog to your side. A dog on a standard six-foot nylon leash is significantly easier to control under emergency circumstances.

The ability to extend the retractable leash to its maximum length allows a canine to generate a significant amount of speed. Many dogs have suffered neck and spinal injuries when the retractable leash reaches its maximum length and abruptly stops extending.

Unlike a standard leash which is easier to grip, there have been reports of dropped retractable leash handles frightening timid dogs who believe that they are being “chased” by the plastic leash handle. While seemingly foolish to us, there have been reports of dogs being struck by vehicles and/or running away due to their lack of understanding of their being “pursued” by a leash handle racing towards them.

Additionally, many retractable leashes malfunction due to a worn/damaged wheel, lock or brake. Should this occur under emergency circumstances, one would struggle to control their pet.

Lastly, retractable leashes do not allow us to train our canine to walk at our side. The ability to roam in any and all directions teaches and encourages our dogs to wander from our side.

In Lee County, Florida, county ordinance mandates a leash no longer than six feet in length.

Please consider utilizing a standard six-foot leash when walking your dog.

Cookie is wondering who could possibly be looking for a small cuddlebug like herself?! Cookie is a 2 year old, poodle mix (were unsure with what) who loves snuggling with people but also loves going on adventures! She's heartworm negative, fully vaccinated, and already recovered from her spay too. Cookie doesn't need extensive grooming but does like ocasional brushing to maintain her coat. She is not shaved down in this picture, this is her natural coat length & texture!

If you're interested in adopting Cookie, or any of our other adoptable dogs, then you can fill our our adoption application listed here: https://form.jotform.com/240076901995059

*Pictures feature our 3 year old future dog trainer! Her duties on the ranch are to help care for and child test our rescue dogs, she’s able to safely feed and walk Alfie on her own! So proud of our (not so little anymore) girl! 😍
