TIME STAMPED TBK 01/12/2023
Scotty Pippin is a slam dunk! This 2 year old hunk was found in Astoria Park about a month ago. He was energetic and sought attention from the intake counselors. And when they pet him, he jumped up and headbutted for more. Scotty Pippin did great on his behavior evaluation, as well as with the female helper dog. Scotty Pippin is hoping to be your MVP-Most Valuable Puppy. Please save this handsome boy before his time runs out!
A volunteer: Scotty Pippin, like his namesake, is an all-star! Was he named this because he loves to stand on his hind legs and be as tall as he can? Probably, but our Scotty isn't quite the 6 foot 8 of his famous friend! He is a more petite 52lbs, and he greets me in his kennel, stretched tall enough to see over the blocker and through the kennel bars and kiss my hands as I open his door. He pops out happily, trots right down the street and right away I can see he's going to be a delight. We meet another volunteer on the street and he takes no time to hop up and greet her with a sweeping happy tail. Scotty loves to jump up, but when I ask him to do it so we can capture it on video, he demures and looks up at me as if to say "who me? I would never, I have much too mature for such puppy stuff!" Instead he curls into me, nuzzles into my lap and requests I pet him while he leans into my legs. He dive bombs into to the ground wriggling about, and paws at me when I stop petting him!

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 3
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Single-pet home, Recommend no dog parks
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Scotty Pippin was uncomfortable with exuberant handling. Due to this behavior we feel he should live in a home with no young children.
RECOMMEND NO DOG PARKS: Due to the concerning behaviors that Scotty Pippin has shown during playgroup (see Dog-Dog Summary ), his kennel reactivity in shelter and his bite history from his previous home, we feel that Scotty should not visit dog parks and be the only resident dog. The Behavior Department recommends that he be socialized in a more controlled setting until his behavior towards other dogs can be further addressed. Reward-based, force-free training can be utilized to help Scotty associate dogs with things he enjoys like toys or treats.
Potential challenges: : Destructive behavior,
Handling/touch sensitivity,
Bite history (dog),
Resource guarding,
Basic manners/poor impulse control,
Separation anxiety,
House soiling,
On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration
Potential challenges comments::
HOUSE SOILING: Scotty Pippin is noted to have accidents in the house, and will likely need guidance with house training. We recommend positive reinforcement, reward-based training only. See handout on House Soiling.
RESOURCE GUARDING: Scotty Pippin is reported to growl when his toys are touched. For this reason, we advise against ever removing items from Scotty's possession without safely trading for an item or greater or equal value. Guidance from a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended to aid in safely managing/modifying this behavior in a new home environment. See handout Resource Guarding.
DESTRUCTIVE BEHAVIOR: Scotty is reported to show destructive behavior in the home, such as chewing on furniture. We are unaware of what, if any, attempts were made to remedy this behavior but we suggest to future adopters that Scotty Pippin will need to be provided with physical and mental stimulation and with a variety of appropriate and engaging chew toys so he can engage in necessary chewing behavior without damage to human objects. See handout on Destructive Behavior.
BASIC MANNERS/ POOR IMPULSE CONTROL: Scotty Pippin has jumped on staff at the care center. It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Leave it", "Sit/Stay", "Down" are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach her to control her impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward based training only is recommended. See handout on Basic Manners.
HANDLING/ TOUCH SENSITIVITY: Scotty Pippin has growled and snapped when restrained, shown discomfort with touch in certain areas, and bit the other resident dog without breaking skin when woken from sleep. It is important to avoid touching Dog's paws at this time and to be cautious when touching him in other areas as we do not know where he may have other sensitivities. Positive reinforcement, reward based training should be used to pair touch with good things such as food rewards in order to teach Dog to be more comfortable with this.
BITE HISTORY (DOG): Scotty has a bite incident where he bit the other resident dog when he was woken from sleep. He did not break skin. See handout on Bite History and Potential for Future Aggression.
SEPARATION ANXIETY: Scotty has been reported to escape crates, bark, and become destructive when left alone in the home. We recommend that potential adopters feel comfortable with separation anxiety behaviors and prepared to manage and positively modify them should they appear in a home environment. See handout on Separation Anxiety.
ON-LEASH REACTIVITY/ BARRIER FRUSTRATION: Scotty has been reported to bark at other dogs. See handout on On-Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration.
Adoption Summary:
What my friends at ACC say about me:
My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet!
I would do best in a home without very tiny humans, although I could be open to older human children once I meet them.
I have been known to shower my favorite people in love!
