I’m so very proud of this boy! Elvis finished strong today winning his 4th Best in Show!! Thank you Judge Janet Emery for seeing my handsome boy in some lovely lineups.

He is growing up and maturing beautifully, he’s also such a goofy love bug. He makes me smile and laugh everyday and his cuddles make everything ok

This can be a hard concept for some people, and I do understand why people want to pick. But with the time and work an ethical breeder puts into their puppies they know them and what their personalities are like. This allows them to match you with the dog who will fit your needs and be able to do what you want with your pup

Nail care is a big part of your pets health. Long nails change how your dog is able to stand and move, which can cause big problems down the road. Nails should be taken care of at least once a month. My personal dogs have their ground/filed once or twice a week. Long nails for your dog is like wear shoes that don’t fit, imagine if your shoes had a lift that forced your toes up. How would that feel?

Overgrown nails prevent your dog from standing normally and puts strain on their ligaments, joints, and is uncomfortable.

For me I dremel my poodles nails every 1-2 weeks because that's a good schedule for us.

Clients I recommend doing every 4-6 weeks. It varies with each dog and some will need them done sooner or can go longer.

If you're not sure about trimming or dremeling your dogs nails yourself, contact a pet stylist as they would be happy to do nails.

Many pet owners don't realize when their dogs nails are overgrown 💓

I often have to remind clients that a behavior they are seeing is because they are a puppy and growing up. The first 18 months is all about building a great foundation. When they are puppies they still lack impulse control and life is just so exciting. Sigh and then enjoy the puppy silliness it really doesn’t last. Work on giving them the building blocks they need for good decisions and great behaviors

Adolescence occurs between six months and 18 months of age—a time when guardians typically struggle the most with their dogs. Some guardians are so overwhelmed and underprepared for this developmental stage of their dog’s life, they choose to surrender the dog to a local shelter or rescue group. In a recent study published in the Journal of Applied Animal Welfare Science found that the majority of the surrendered dogs (47.7 percent) ) were between 5 months and 3 years of age (M.D. Salman,John G. New, Jr.,Janet M. Scarlett,Philip H. Kass,Rebecca Ruch-Gallie &Suzanne Hetts, 2010)

The neurobiology of adolescence is fascinating, with some key events that alter both the structure and function of the brain.

During canine adolescence, changing s*x hormones effect the animals stress responses. Adolescent dogs have a decreased ability to process information they are receiving from the environment including the presence of dogs, vehicles, people, or really anything around them. They behave in ways that might feel frustrating or upsetting for the dog’s person.

The connectivity between the frontal cortex (responsible for decision making) and amygdala (responsible for emotional processing) decreases, resulting in less behavioral control. We see increased risk taking and more sensitivity to fear.

So what does this mean? This could mean that what was once no big deal to the dog now feels scary; what was once easy to do is now stressful; what once made sense is now confusing. At times, the world can feel like ‘too much’ for the adolescent dog.

As your puppy undergoes this transition into adulthood their inner world is intense, even chaotic. Many pet owners experience an increase in undesirable behavior and find themselves becoming increasingly frustrated. In turn, our own frustration and impatience can cause us to act unpredictably. This adds to our puppy’s inner turmoil. When the inside and the outside are both unpredictable it can be difficult for our dogs to adjust.

If you have an adolescent dog, what can you do? You can give your dog the time and space to observe what is going on around them when on leash at a distance away from the activity when possible. You can give your dog long walks to sniff and explore in nature, giving their brain time to decompress. You can offer your dog a quiet space to sleep so that they can consolidate memories effectively. You can continue training various skills, breaking them down into easier steps that can be generously reinforced.

By understanding what our adolescent dog is experiencing we gain greater compassion and understanding. When we approach adolescence with patience we create a world that is predictable and gentle so our puppies grow up to be their best adult selves.

If you love how your pups smell when they come home from grooming with me, this is the amazing small business that makes that happen! Their facial fluff is what makes their faces kissable clean, acid wash helps me get their tangles and keep their coats more manageable.

I love being able to support other small businesses 💗 their new fall scents look amazing and I already have goodies ordered!

This is SO important!!! Nail health effects so much for your dogs. I have nail trim appointments any day that I’m grooming and can easily be booked online.

I do my dogs nails weekly and most dogs need them done every 2-4 weeks. Allowing the nail to grow lets the quick (vein and nerves inside) to grow out. Once that happen the nail can only be cut so short, it then takes dedicated work and time to get the quick to recede.

I know I've posted this before, but this is a wonderful explanation of nail maintenance and why it's important for your pets.

I personally Dremel my dog's nails every 1 to 2 weeks, And find that it helps keep the quicks at a good length

Why Choosing a Breeder Who Shows Their Dogs Matters, Even for Pet Owners

When selecting a breeder, you might wonder why it’s recommended to choose one who shows their dogs, even if you have no intention of participating in dog shows yourself. Does this focus on show standards seem excessive or elitist? It’s not, and here’s why.

Dog shows are more than just competitions; they serve as a rigorous evaluation process where dogs are assessed against the breed standard. This standard includes several critical elements:

• Soundness: This refers to a dog’s overall physical and mental health, ensuring all organs and faculties are functioning harmoniously.
• Type: Breed type encompasses not just appearance but also character, bone structure, temperament, and movement, reflecting the essence of the breed.
• Gait: The quality of a dog’s movement is assessed to ensure ease and freedom from structural issues.
• Temperament: This measures a dog’s general attitude towards people and other animals, an essential trait for a well-rounded companion.

So why does this matter to you as a prospective pet owner? If you chose a Poodle, you likely did so because of their renowned qualities: their gentle nature, compatibility with children and other animals, and their ability to make exceptional therapy dogs. Good breeders strive to uphold these positive characteristics through their commitment to breed standards.

While not every puppy from a show-quality litter will be destined for the show ring, all will benefit from the breeder’s dedication to preserving the breed’s positive traits. Puppies that are not suited for the show ring but are well-bred still embody the breed’s essential qualities, making them excellent family pets.

Choosing a breeder who shows their dogs is not about snobbery or elitism; it’s about ensuring that you get a puppy who will grow into a well-rounded, healthy companion that exemplifies the breed you fell in love with. It’s about the breeder’s commitment to preserving the breed’s best traits and ensuring every puppy, regardless of its future in the show ring, starts life with the best possible foundation.

In essence, selecting a breeder who shows their dogs is a way to ensure that your future puppy will be a healthy, well-adjusted member of your family. It’s a reflection of love and respect for the breed, ensuring that all puppies have the opportunity to thrive and bring joy into their new homes.

💫Best in Show!!!💫

I hardly even have words, I’m so proud of my boy today! Elvis pranced into ring two and decided it was his day! Thank you judge Nikki Swap for seeing Elvis in some beautiful line ups 💗

Showing is always a roller coaster with ups and downs. I have lots of dreams for this boy and I have to remember to get out of my own head. Elvis loves this game and I have to remember to just have fun.

Thank you Rose Childers for breeding this handsome young man and putting him in my hands, today was his 3rd Best in show at only 19 months old. Thank you Shawn for ALWAYS being my cheerleader, listening, and helping pull me out of my own head. Thank you to those of you who have listened to me rant recently and then helped me problem solve what was being seen. This takes a community and I’m very blessed to have you all
