Horse Welfare Organizations Unite to Protest at Shelbyville Celebration

Shelbyville, TN – For the first time ever, a dozen horse welfare organizations from across the United States are coming together to protest at the Celebration in Shelbyville, Tennessee. The protest will take place at the side entrance of the celebration, located on Celebration Drive, on August 29th at 5:30 pm.

The organizations are protesting the abuse of Tennessee walking horses, a practice known as "soring." Soring involves the intentional infliction of pain to a horse's hooves and legs in order to produce an exaggerated gait that is prized in the show ring, but is only achieved through abuse and suffering.

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has ruled against soring, stacks, and chains, and these organizations are coming together to show their support of the USDA's final ruling to end this abuse and to be the voice for horses.

"Soring is a cruel and inhumane practice that causes horses immense pain and suffering," said Tawnee Preisner, a representative of Horse Plus Humane Society. "We are calling on the USDA to enforce its ruling and put an end to this abuse once and for all."

The organizations are also calling on the Shelbyville Celebration to adopt a zero-tolerance policy for soring and to ban the use of stacks and chains.

"The Shelbyville Celebration has the responsibility to protect the horses that are shown at its event," said Tawnee Preisner. "We urge the Celebration to do the right thing and end the abuse of Tennessee Walking horses."

The protest will feature speakers from various horse welfare organizations. The organizations coming together to protest are from Tennessee, Utah, South Dakota, Nebraska, Texas, Wisconsin, Indiana and Michigan. Never has there been such a large presence at a protest representing horse welfare organizations across the United States that are saying no to horse abuse, no to stacks and chains, and that this abuse must be stopped!

Busy day today! We had guests after morning chores, volunteers came out to help with cleaning stalls and they started filling open stalls with limestone. Ava and Celina Rautiola rode a couple of horses, Jeff picked up more donated hay, we moved horses around and brought Shalise in so she could eat in peace (Logan is a piglet), all while enduring cold rain storms and thick humid heat off and on all day. Exhausted is an understatement!

Babysitting my great friend Shawn's new Friesian filly until she gets some fencing sorted out. What a beauty! This was today's update video to Shawn. We got a ton of work done today, but no pics due to it just being Jeff and I. Besides, nothing was too exciting, stalls, washing down barn floor, moving stall mats. This weanling filly Cherish was the highlight of the day!

Yes, it's just one photo, but it's a sweet picture that deserves to stand alone!

Dawn Teall-Kretzinger and our newest horse Logan, (who arrived yesterday), are enjoying a piece of watermelon 🍉🌞💖.

I'm almost positive they were sharing it... 🤔😁

Update! Sissy had a 3rd visit to the vet yesterday (tues the 20th) and she is almost healed, amazingly fast! No more antibiotics and she was reunited with her herd!

❗️WARNING, some pictures are graphic❗️

As some of you may know, Sissy, our beautiful and talented POA mare bashed her head on something last Monday, the same morning she was scheduled for an airway scope to find out why her breathing was loud, even at rest. The GOOD news is that her airways are clean but narrow, and perfectly fine. If not for her Frankenstein face, she would be clear to adopt. Horses, right? 🥴

The not so good news is that she was back at the vets yesterday as the flesh covering her deep wounds died off despite our best efforts and she needed some minor surgery.

Sissy is at home recovering but will need multiple visits to keep this large wound healing. We sure could use your help with our never ending vet bills.

Help Sissy and horses like her by donating!
Help us Rescue, Shelter & Protect no matter the needs. See our donate button below this post,or at any of the links. Sicily thanks you!!

❤️ This will warm your heart! ❤️

Lane was adopted LAST Sunday and just today his tiny human Nora, showed him in a speed class at a show series in Alpena, MI called Horses on the Rise. Wow, just wow are we proud of both Nora and Lane! Make sure you watch to the end!

Next week is County Fair where they will be showing off in walk/trot and halter! The versatility and gentleness of Standardbreds should never be underestimated!

❗️We have a new surrender that came in today who needs your help!❗️

This gorgeous Egyptian Arabian filly, unnamed, is only 3 years old, very thin and scared of her own shadow. She's been through some traumatic things, emotionally and physically.

After an initial assessment and attempts at cleaning her wounds, we've decided she needs sedated and some intensive vet care due to an oozing wound on her shoulder, wounds under her tail, a swollen hind leg, a possible systemic infection plus significant dehydration. We will be keeping a vigilant eye on her and calling Dr. Andy first thing Monday morning.

Please donate to help heal this sweet little girl and horses like her!

Photos of the Day part II - Adoption Event 7-28-24!
We all had a great time meeting new people and talking horses all day! Lane and Buddy left for their new homes, and Sissy our sweet POA is being seriously considered by a previous adoptee (with some 17 yr old birthday begging) 😂
Last Friday Cheeser went to his new home, and a few days before that we delivered Trepi to her new digs! All in all a great event! Thank you to ALL who showed up to help or simply give support by hanging out with us! We appreciate you all so much!

It's been a crazy week of preparation for our Adoption Event and also our trip to Tennessee at the end of August with Horse Plus Humane Society and the Circle of Life Horse Shelter Network. Throw in some guests, adopted horses delivered, another 200 donated hay squares to pick up and unload (thank you Aimee and Mike!), and county fairs taking up some of our team member's time, it's safe to say we haven't been taking many photos. Here's a few for your horse fix! 😘😘
