Our new feeding tongs have arrived! This will ensure safety of our members, as well as our tortoises from the old clothespins we use to use! These will also be much easier to sanitize and won’t hurt the animals if they accidentally take too big of a bite! Who’s ready to feed some tortoises⁉️
Coatis have a very strong sense of smell, and using scent enrichment really gives them something to do and enjoy. You can even see him rubbing the scent in his tail and fur to keep the smell around a little longer 🥰 we also hide treats around his exhibit allowing him to have natural foraging habits. We just built him a brand new catch box which makes daily entertainment a breeze, and much safer for the days he’s a little more aggressive.
Some love them, some hate them, but Guinea Fowl can have many benefits on a farm or large property. These birds are bug eating machines, running around all day long eating ticks, grasshoppers, and all bugs in between. They have even been observed standing in a wall formation pushing snakes and other animals away from their home areas. They can also be EXTREMELY LOUD, which is the main reason some may not like them, but they provide a great alarm system on a farm once you get accustomed to the different meanings of there calls.
We are now up to 21 sliders in our rescue turtle pond! The pond is roughly 3,500 gallons, but we don’t want to overcrowd the turtles so they have an enjoyable life, so Rescue turtle pond 2.0 may be something we look at doing in the future! This pond was 100% funded by donations and we know we could do a much larger 10,000 gallon?.. One day!
Woody is absolutely loving his new larger home 🥰 he seems so much more comfortable and happy 😊

After almost 3 month, we have 12 babies headed out to the real world. Life is going to be extremely difficult for these guys no doubt. But they are in a perfect area to hopefully thrive, and eat as many rats and mice over the years reducing real threats to people, like disease.
Showing our medium sulcatas their future home 🥰 they are going to love it once it’s completed!
Some people may see their worst nightmare, we see new life exploring this big scary world for the first time. Rat snakes are crucial to our environment, and when we educate and not hate, the world can be better for us all.
Woody has always refused any shade we give him, but never turns down a good hose down.
The amount of muscle Wally has put on over the last year has been unreal. He’s always been a strong animal for his size, but now he’s on a whole new level! We love Wally, and can’t wait to introduce baby Sidney to him 🥰
We appreciate our members' support as we shift from 2021's spring building of the camel exhibit, to current renovations for rescue tortoises, knowing these efforts will be physically and financially demanding, but ultimately fulfilling. And no, we are not getting rid of woody the camel! He is legitimately our baby and he’s going to be in a much larger exhibit viewable from our nature trail 😁 Don’t wait until the days before we open back up, and become a member today, so we can make this the most beautiful place to visit in Alabama, while also making a difference in our community and state😁Link is in the comments for becoming a member!
Make sure to see Aziz the blackthroat monitor at your next visit! We will have his outdoor exhibit fully finished by the time we open back up September 5th. Also keep in mind before your next visit to sign up as a member or come with a member or there is no entry, members a their guests only! Read our last posts for more details.
Opossums aren’t these big scary animals some may think. Would I recommend grabbing them bare handed?… no, but all they want to do is get away or play dead. I needed to let this new mama know this isn’t the place to hang around. P.S. DO NOT TRY THIS WITH A RACCOON🤣
Indeed, the dog bites 😂 #bighamfarmsexotics #bighamfarms #tortoiserescue #turtlesanctuary #turtlerescue
One more box turtle released into our lowland/wetland nature trail. When you find these crossing the road, it is always best to help them in the direction they were heading. And it is important to know that you should never take an eastern box turtle home as a “pet”. Not only is it inhumane, it is also illegal in most states including Alabama. When looking for a pet turtle, look into captive bred animals, and always check local and state laws. #boxturtle #keepwildturtleswild #bighamfarmsexotics #bighamfarms #tortoiserescue #turtlesanctuary #turtlerescue #tuscaloosaalabama #tortoisesanctuary
