Do bees really need veterinarians??

In 2017, the FDA introduced a law stating antimicrobials given to animals must be used or ordered through a veterinarian via prescriptions or veterinary feed directives. This includes honey bees, which do face bacterial disease and require antibiotics for treatment!

Thus, bees NEED vets! Vets must first establish a veterinarian-client-patient relationship (VCPR). Then our knowledge of honey bee medicine is essential to inspecting hives, diagnosing disease, and prescribing appropriate antimicrobials. This is only one example of the role vets can play in honey bee health. Follow to learn more about honey bee medicine!

Welcome to Texas A&M Bee Vets! We are the first student organization at Texas A&M dedicated to beekeeping and honey bee medicine.

We work closely with the Texas A&M Honey Bee Lab to provide veterinary students with educational opportunities over honey bee health.
