Shelter entry placement is important! 🎯

When making shelters from styrofoam boxes or totes, aim to place the opening as far to the side (left or right, your choice) as possible without compromising the side wall of the container. Also, place the opening high up, as close to the lid as possible. You want the cat to step down into the straw that you'll eventually place inside. Placing the hole high also prevents puddling rain and accumulating snow from entering the shelter and soaking the straw. Remember, you're going to fill that shelter approximately 2/3 full with loose straw. The cat should step DOWN into it, not have to make his way through it. Also, when kitty exits, he will not drag the straw out of the shelter if the hole is placed higher.

Remember to keep the entry hole small. It only needs to be 5-6" wide, or the width of kitty's whiskers. A smaller door discourages other animals (like raccoons) from entering and keeps heat inside.

πŸ’‘LET'S CLARIFY: the handwarmers go IN BETWEEN the two boxes, not mingled in the top pan, on top of the food. There seems to be some confusion about that!

Check out this cool hack from our pals at Neighborhood Cats to prevent your cat colony's wet food from turning into icy blocks during these frigid temperatures! ❄️

Grab two small, brand-new litter boxes. πŸ“¦πŸ“¦

Place three hand warmers at the bottom of one box, then slide the empty litter box into the first one. You can snag these single-use, air-activated hand warmers at your local hardware store or find them online. πŸ›’πŸ’»

Now, pop the wet food at the top directly over the hand warmers and toss some dry food at the other end. Thanks to this setup, the hand warmers will keep the food from freezing for a solid six hours! πŸ•°οΈ No more chilly dinners for your feline friends! 🐾

This week, our region experienced unprecedented low temperatures, prompting concerns for our community cats enduring the cold. Don't forget: opt for straw in shelters, not blankets! Straw serves as a superior insulator, channeling warmth back to the kitty nestled in or on it. 🌬️🐱

Struggling to keep water from freezing without a heated bowl? Here are some things you can do:
βœ”οΈ Regularly refill with warm water.
βœ”οΈ Add a pinch of sugar to prevent freezing.
βœ”οΈ Place the bowl in sunlight, shielded from wind.
βœ”οΈ Use hand warmers or microwavable pads underneath.
βœ”οΈ Opt for plastic, thick-walled bowls (like Tupperware).
βœ”οΈ Choose a deep, narrow bowl; they freeze slower.
βœ”οΈ Pick a dark bowl for sun-absorption.
βœ”οΈ Sink the bowl into a styrofoam box for insulation.
πŸ“ Float a few ping pong balls in the water to slow freezing.
πŸ“¦ Check with your doctor's office, vet, or pharmacy for smaller vaccine boxes.

Thanks for your efforts for the kitties, especially in this chilly weather! πŸΎβ„οΈ

Happy everybody, from me and my boy, Mowgli! Did you know that black cats are the slowest to get adopted from shelters and rescues?😿

Black cats have been associated with many myths and superstitions (I have a YouTube video all about that), but in reality, they're just misunderstood, and make incredible companions who bring joy and love to the lives of so many.πŸ–€

Please share your love for black cats in the comments, and let's help spread awareness about the importance of adopting! And if you REALLY want to show that you appreciate them, adopt one (or two!) TODAY!πŸˆβ€β¬›πŸˆβ€β¬›

Is this your old dog? It was β€œfound” yesterday somewhere between McKenzie Street & possibly the Dollar General on Washington Street near the Dinwiddie line. This dog did not wander far from its home. We would like to get it back to its people. Please contact us at 804-732-3654 if it belongs to you.
