Hey barrel racers! Let’s talk about something that can make or break your run: leads. Specifically, picking up the correct lead on departures (like out of the alley or leaving a barrel) and executing smooth lead changes between barrels.
Why do they matter so much?
1. Balance: Being on the correct lead keeps your horse’s weight distributed properly—inside for the turn. Wrong lead? The horse gets off-balance, scrambles, and loses rhythm. That means wider turns and lost time.
2. Power & Strength Leaving Barrels: A correct departure lets your horse drive powerfully from the hindquarters. On the wrong lead, the hind end can’t engage fully, reducing propulsion. You’ll see horses “lose” a hind lead coming out, forcing a scramble and slower exit.
3. Smooth Lead Changes: Between the first and second barrel (opposite directions), a clean flying (or simple) change sets you up perfectly for the next turn. No change = approaching on the wrong lead = rough, slow turn. Pros emphasize hip control and collection for effortless changes.
Wrong leads don’t just slow you down—they stress uneven muscles, increasing soreness risk in hocks, stifles, and more.
Tip: Build fundamentals slow—perfect circles on correct leads, hip control drills, and feel those footfalls. Rush it, and bad habits stick!
