Mental Enrichment Monday
Problem Solving
One of the best ways to work your dog’s brain is through problem solving. There are numerous enrichment toys and puzzles that you can use to add an element of problem solving to your dog’s day. You can also use games like hide and seek to engage the nose and the brain and create an exciting challenge for your dog. You can put your dog in a stay and then hide treats, toys, or even people around the house and release them to go find an exciting reward!

Training Tip Tuesday
Be Patient
When training, you need to go at your dog’s pace and capacity. Always make sure your dog is in a comfortable place to learn and make sure their responses to cues are solid before changing the context and putting them in a new environment. If you think your dog “doesn’t get it” or is being “stubborn,” you are probably putting them in situations where they are unable to cope. Dogs cannot learn or respond in situations where they are overstimulated, so take it slow and listen to your dog.
Rushing through the training process or forcing dogs to do things that they are uncomfortable with will only cause more tension. Using force and physical punishment in situations where your dog is stressed, excited, or anxious, will likely cause them to bottle up their emotions and shut down out of fear of punishment. A shut down dog is not neutral or well-adjusted to their environment, they are merely avoiding punishment by doing nothing, the underlying feeling is still present, it’s just simmering inside of them. We need to train by addressing the underlying emotions and it does not benefit us to create new emotions that need to be worked through.

Training Tip Tuesday
Train the Dog In Front of You!
Dog training is not a one-size-fits-all situation. While there are basic psychological concepts used to influence behavior, they will look different for every dog. Every dog is unique and they all have different learning styles and capacities. They all find different things rewarding and aversive.
Each dog also has a different emotional response to any given situation and training should be centered around addressing that underlying emotion and then reinforcing the behaviors you want to see.
Not every dog will benefit from the same training tools and many training tools and methods can cause a dog more stress thereby creating other behavioral issues.
We are not just training *A* dog, we are training *THIS* dog!
