Take advantage of these tips when traveling with your doggie this holiday season..
11 tips for traveling with your dog this holiday:
1. Get your dog acquainted with a travel safe crate to determine comfort level.
2. Make sure your crate meets airline requirements. Requirements can be different from airline to airline.
3. Bring extra potty pads, food and water.
4. If your dog is prone to diarrhea when traveling due to stress, start your pooch on nutritional supplements after consulting with your vet.
5. Do not restrict water in-take. Dehydration can make dogs sick, uncomfortable and irritable.
6. Make sure your doggie wears ID all the time in case of a car accident and an escape or there is a carrier mix up at the airport or in cargo.
7. Take frequent breaks for rest and relief.
8. Make sure your dog is up to date on vaccinations- records are required 10 days prior to air travel. Take records, along with a recent picture with you.
9. Traveling by car is boring for anyone. Bring both new and old toys.
10. Pack an emergency dog first aid kit. We’ve all heard the horrors and harm done to dogs placed in cargo. You won’t be close to a vet, so pack the kit, it could come in handy.
11. Work on manners and obedience for a few weeks before you depart to refresh and reinforce the value of good behavior.
