Meet Aaron: I am Minister Aaron K Hopkins ( He/Him ), a Servant of God and Community. I am the Farm Visionary and Executive Director of South Side Family Farms and its farm enterprises.
Aaron’s South Side Roots: I've lived in this immediate community for 31 years at my current location, yards from the farm. Before that, I lived two miles from our current address for 13 years. I also attend church and serve within walking distance of home. I am the current servant President of the South Side Community Action Network Civic Association and am the Religious Social Services Commissioner for the Columbus South Side Area Commission.
Aaron’s History in Landscaping & Gardening: As an 11-year-old growing up a mile away from where I currently live, I had a paper route that allowed me to connect with residents where I would ask to cut their grass and trim their bushes. I also planted flowers with my mom at our home. At the age of twenty, I started a series of jobs at local landscape nurseries for the next 12 years of my life.
Why Aaron started South Side Family Farms: Under the direction of my church Pastor, to balance the axis of the cross of Church and Community Commitment, I joined the community civic association, South Side Community Action Network (SSCAN). The purpose of SSCAN is to connect residents with solutions. From this, grew the Growing Community and Family Concerns Farm Market. Our goal is to provide a safe, protected garden environment that connects neighborhood seniors and their wisdom with the strength of youth who have become disconnected from our community. It is a place where we begin to reconnect as a neighborhood family. Seniors give guidance and share their experiences on how they have grown backyard gardens to feed their families. They also show young women who are single parents how to cook healthy meals quickly and easily.
