MedVet Cleveland Oncology is celebrating the remarkable journey of Garath, a truly courageous cat.

Last summer, Garath was diagnosed with an injection site sarcoma on his left elbow and began treatment under the expert care of our Oncologist, Dr. Rochelle Prudic. Despite the initial chemotherapy, the sarcoma advanced, leading to the tough but necessary decision to amputate his leg to give him the best chance at a longer, healthier life.

Today, we're overjoyed to celebrate more than a year of survivorship for Garath, who has adapted wonderfully to life on three legs. His resilience and spirit are an inspiration to all of us here at MedVet. Here’s to many more years of joy and health for this handsome, three-legged hero!

In a true display of MedVet’s collaborative spirit, Bella was then transferred to MedVet New Orleans for crucial intermittent hemodialysis with our critical care team, giving her kidneys the best chance to recover. 💪

Meet Jake, an energetic 1-year-old Goldendoodle who turned an afternoon of yard play into a visit to MedVet Asheville's Surgery department! After injuring one of the long bones in his forearm, Jake needed a bit of extra care from Dr. MacKenzie Whyte and our skilled surgery team.

Dr. Whyte performed a successful surgery, placing a plate to stabilize Jake’s fracture while it healed (see X-ray photo). Fast forward to his six-week check-up, and the X-rays showed fantastic news — Jake is fully healed. 💪

Now, Jake is happily getting back to his playful self and gradually returning to his exercise routine. We’re so proud of you, Jake!

The more pets have adopted the indoor, modern life that their families lead, the more pets suffer from the same illnesses that people do. Conditions such as arthritis, high blood pressure, organ-related illnesses like liver disease, kidney disease or heart disease, hormonal illnesses like diabetes and, sadly, cancer can become more common as pets age.

True or False: Dogs with diabetes often develop cataracts.

True! ✅ Meet Buster, our brave patient who faced vision challenges due to diabetic cataracts. After his diabetes diagnosis last year, Buster’s sight became increasingly limited. Thankfully, our ophthalmologist, Dr. Rose Vogel at MedVet Cleveland stepped in with a plan.

After diagnosing Buster with diabetic cataracts, Dr. Vogel performed a phacoemulsification (cataract surgery) to remove them and restore Buster’s vision. We’re thrilled to announce that Buster’s surgery was a resounding success!

Buster is back to seeing the world with his soulful eyes and we couldn't be happier for him and his family. 💙

Meet Simba, our adorable patient who’s been making great strides with MedVet Jupiter's Rehabilitation/Integrative Medicine department!

Simba came to us with bilateral CCL tears, which is a common issue causing hind limb lameness, pain, and often arthritis. With a tear in both knees, she’s in the company of many dogs who need special care to get back on their paws.

Instead of surgery, we’ve tailored a treatment plan just for Simba, starting with laser therapy and moving on to our underwater treadmill for water therapy. Watching her smile with enthusiasm for her exercises has been truly heartwarming. 💙

We’re so proud of Simba’s progress throughout her journey. Keep up the great work, Simba!

Meet Maggie, a 14-year-old Beagle mix, who visited MedVet Columbus after experiencing seizures. To evaluate the cause of Maggie's seizures, an MRI and abdominal ultrasound were recommended. Unfortunately, the MRI of Maggie's brain revealed a suspected meningioma of the left forebrain (one of the most common brain tumors in dogs and cats known to cause seizures) and the abdominal ultrasound uncovered a urethra mass, which was confirmed to be a transitional cell carcinoma (one of the most common cancers of the urinary bladder).

Maggie was transferred to our Radiation Oncology department for treatment of both masses. As part of her treatment plan, Maggie successfully completed 10 intermediate radiation therapy treatments, and we're delighted to share she has remained seizure free!

We're thankful to Maggie's pet family for trusting MedVet with her care and are happy to see her living a happy, healthy life. 💙

On the National Day of Service and Remembrance, we pause to remember September 11, 2001.

We pay tribute to all the heroes, including the incredible K9 units that served valiantly alongside their handlers in the search and rescue operations. More than 300 courageous dogs were deployed to search the wreckage of the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, working tirelessly sifting through rubble, and offering comfort amidst the chaos. Their unwavering loyalty, bravery, and extraordinary senses played a crucial role in the rescue efforts during one of our nation's darkest times.

Today, we honor their invaluable contributions and remember their heroic spirits. Our hearts are with all those impacted by 9/11 as we remember the valor of first responders, civilians, and these incredible four-legged heroes.

09/09/2024

When Gabby's family noticed a decline in her energy and reluctance to eat or drink, a visit to her family veterinarian was in order. Gabby's blood work revealed dangerously low red blood cells that resulted in a blood transfusion, and shortly after she was referred to Dr. John Crandell at MedVet Akron for further evaluation.

Over the next 15 months, Gabby was closely monitored by Dr. Crandell and the internal medicine team, undergoing various blood and imaging tests, ultimately leading to a diagnosis of non-regenerative anemia.

She received several blood transfusions while being treated with different combinations of immunosuppressive medicines — her journey to healing faced many ups and downs.

Fortunately, Gabby was a candidate for surgical removal of her spleen — a procedure that can potentially cure non-regenerative anemia. Dr. Daniel Davis performed a successful splenectomy and as a result, Gabby has not required any additional blood transfusions and has been weaned off her immunosuppressive medicine.

While Gabby's non-regenerative anemia is a thing of the past, regular check-ups with Dr. Crandell Help ensure she remains in good health.

In her spare time, Gabby enjoys napping, nudging her family for snacks (especially popcorn), chasing squirrels, zoomies, and volunteering in the Avon Lake neighborhood watch program. Way to go, Gabby!

Our MedVet New Orleans team recently had the opportunity to help Aiko, a lively 15-month-old Goldendoodle who arrived with concerning nasal breathing sounds. Our caregivers learned that Aiko had been chewing on a rock, which led to unusual hacking, gagging, and nasal symptoms. Our skilled ER team sprang into action, suspecting a nasopharyngeal foreign body might be the culprit.

At the recommendation of our ER team, X-rays were performed, revealing a large rock firmly lodged in the back of Aiko's nasal passages. Despite the challenge, the rock was safely removed, allowing Aiko to breathe freely again. We're overjoyed to share that she is now feeling much better and back to her playful self. Check out Aiko’s X-ray and the rock culprit below ⤵️
