Don’t give all your leaves to the city to compost - those leaves belong to their ecosystem, the land you are stewarding!

Leaves in perennial beds can sit there through winter - spend your new found time making soup for friend!)

If you have grass and don’t want it to be smothered, skip the rake and save your arm workout for other tasks. Run the lawnmower right over them. Shift your setting to bag some and mulch some. The grass will appreciate the nutrients you pre-chew for them and the rest can provide a winter blanket on your garden beds and be stored to serve your compost bin to add as “brown” material.

With thanks to beautiful late fall weather, The Spurgeon General, and an urban agriculture infrastructure grant from our high tunnel is getting a new cover. Will do our very best to make this massive sheet of plastic worth its eventual spot in the landfill.

Farm Aid: Post-fest prequel. (Just like Star Wars, sharing the beginning of this journey after its ending.)

Friday evening, before a single guitar was plugged in, and I visited a few urban farms in downtown Minneapolis. It’s always inspiring to see how others are occupying this space. and hit all the right chords - community, food sovereignty, creative land use….

The past few years have been challenging for me and OTFUF but Farm Aid helped me see the value of this project over the years and renewed my desire to keep it going into the future. I can’t do it alone. Keep your eyes on this space for invitations to come visit and lend a hand.

I am endlessly frustrated by weather reports. They say there is a good chance of rain when the likelihood is under 10%. They say it will be another beautiful day when it hasn’t rained in weeks.

This one gets closer to the truth of what I am hearing from farmers and homesteaders in our area.

Columbus saw less than an inch of rain during the entire month of August. While that's led to some crunchy lawns and thirsty gardens, Ohio's state climatologist says it's still not as bad as last year's record drought.

New to the blog: some intial reflections on the season…

One might say we were blessed by an incredible crop of sunflowers this season. They self-seeded throughout the farm; a result of the goldfinches’ messy eating last year. The combination of ra…

The summer is coming to a screeching halt. Things didn’t go as I’d hoped on many fronts, but that’s seems to be the way of the world at the moment.

As I reflect back, I am grateful for two (brief) road trips that led me to family and friends that feel like family, tied together by

July in Asheville checking in with the folks at for the first time since Helene included a hike with Heather and a studio visit to see where the magic happens.

August in Blue Ridge where the chanterelles and time puzzling with mom fed body and soul.

Now back to our regularly scheduled program….
