Found a little patch of forrest in downtown Columbus yesterday during a wee internet outage at the office. This nod to nature’s irregularity ironically fits perfectly in a show called “On the Grid” - at the through Oct 4. Worth a visit if you haven’t seen it. Thank you for making magic with pompoms.

Been awhile since one of these posts but if you had any doubt that central Ohio is experiencing a drought this summer, this what the f*ckers do when there aren’t any puddles around. I feel bad for them, but come on guys! They really did have had climb for these. Plan to set out the camera tonight to see if I can catch them in action.

Despite the HOT DRY weather this season, we had a fabulous cabbage season thanks to winter seed starting and season extension transplant practices. It’s fun to have a lot of something. Last summer it was zucchini. Forces you to try new recipes. We’ve been enjoying a lot of new slaws this summer. Hit me up if you need a recipe.

Happy Pride Columbus, Ohio! I miss parades of days gone by - the route, characters, and creativity - but in this moment, a great big show of solidarity seems totally appropriate.

First round of seedlings hardening off for transplant. While the weather is frighteningly weird and is DEFINITELY warmer than this time last year, I checked my IG feed and found I was hardening things off February 25, 2023. Love having a text + image record to look back on. This year I’ll have spreadsheets too.

Join our Spring Greens & Herbs CSA and take these babies home in a few short weeks! Link in bio.

Holy wow. I’ve been around these parts long enough to learn there are a lot of people out there trying to make money off books about farming with catchy titles that aren’t saying anything new. Books that I am happy to look through and even suggest to others but nothing I need to own because I wouldn’t pick them up a second time.

Ohio’s own Gene Logsdon’s Letters to a Young Farmer is not one of those. (Note: I am a sucker for anything that starts with “Letters to a….” after reading Rilke’s Letters to a Young Poet my freshman year in college in a German Literature course that mostly went way over my head.) But this is one I’m gonna have to buy. I am having a very hard time fighting the urge to earmark, highlight, and annotate the margins of the library copy I borrowed.

I am not a young farmer nor, entering my 11th season, a beginning farmer anymore. But every essay in this book speaks to me as someone who has gained good health, happiness, and friendship through our small farm. Here’s a gem to inspire you to join one of our CSAs this coming season (link in bio). And please, tag a friend you think might be interested!

“Maybe farming isn’t an economic process that is supposed to make money. What if food production should be an activity that nearly everyone has to be involved in, like cooking or taking a bath?”

Thanks for the introduction.

PLEASE SHARE: As we round out International CSA Sign-Up Week, I am excited to announce we’re returning to our community-supported agriculture roots after a two-year sabbatical. We know signing up for a full season of pick-ups is not for everyone so we’re trying something new this year, offering shorter options. Use the link in our bio to read more and sign-up for our Greens & Herbs and U-Pick Flower shares!
