Dear Tryon Equine clients,

Given the recent Hurricane that has upended the lives of many humans and animals alike, we would like to make some recommendations regarding management of our equid companions moving forward.

Given the significant weather changes and flooding associated with the recent Hurricane, certain infectious diseases may become more prevalent and outbreaks/clusters of normally rarer/less- common diseases could occur. Potomac horse Fever (PHF), a bacterial diarrheal disease, transmitted via aquatic insects (caddisflies, mayflies, damselflies, and dragonflies), in horses that are kept near rivers/ streams, or in irrigated/flooded pastures, is one that may surface after this Hurricane. This disease is normally seen during the warm weather months.

Potomac Horse Fever can cause fever, lethargy, lack of appetite, diarrhea, laminitis, abortion in pregnant mares and can be deadly. Vaccination does not prevent the disease completely but will attenuate the clinical signs.

We are recommending boostering horses with this vaccination. In horses that have been vaccinated for PHF >6 months previously, a second booster 3 weeks later is recommended. We also recommend ensuring that other bi-annual vaccinations are up to date including, EWT (Eastern & Western Equine Encephalitis & tetanus) , WNV (West Nile Virus) and Flu/Rhinopneumonitis (Influenza and Herpes virus).

As we continue to navigate through the disastrous aftermath of Helene, we want to thank our first responders, community volunteers, utility workers and all those who are assisting those in need with their time, donations and resources.
