This small business Saturday I am reminded how blessed I am by all of my clients! I am also blessed to have my family and many friends that support all my business adventures!

Today I am sitting next to Buddy reflecting on all the changes that have happened since opening in 2011. I started out very nervous that no one would trust me to make their dogs look amazing. I now sit here with a very full schedule with amazing clients that have become friends. My favorite part is the way they keep tabs on all the things my family has going on, most of them know our kids by name.

This weekend is pry my last weekend of nothing much going on. Many of you know we just purchased a new property. We are slowly getting settled into our new home. Starting this next week I will begin full blown work on remodeling so I can move my grooming salon here. Then in the couple months to follow I will be opening Buddy's Hideaway Dog Boarding!

I know being 13 miles out of town will take some adjusting for scheduling. I will be making some changes to my times also to assist with pick up and drop off times. I also completely understand if this means you will no longer be able to bring your dog(s) to me for grooming. I fully respect that and hope you understand how much I have loved and enjoyed grooming your dog(s).

As far as dates. I plan to have grooming open in Janaury at the new location. Then I hope to have boarding open in March. I do not have exact dates yet as I am still waiting to meet with different workers for all the things that need to be done. I then will need to have things inspected before opening. I will update as things begin progressing. Also be watching for a page for Buddy's Hideaway after the 1st of the year!

Thank you for all of your support and friendship this far. I look forward to continuing to serve you in the future as your dog groomer and to care for your dog while you are away!

Yesterday I had to give Miss Zoey a ride home as her owners had something come up and they weren't able to make it work to pick her up in time for me to leave.

In knowing that I will be relocating my business to our property in the coming months, is this something I need to figure out? I know it will be hard to work around lunch breaks like most you do currently.

If I found someone to pick up and drop off dogs and charged a small fee to help pay them would you use it?

Hello! My name is Samson. I am an Afghan Hound. You guys see me all the time as I come weekly for brush outs. This visit however I had to get a bath. What can I say, I love to play outside. 🤣 She had to pick out some sand burrs also. Just because I look fancy doesn’t mean I don’t like to act like a young dog!

Christina sure puts a lot of work into this hair of mine. I get scrubbed once with her basic hypo allergy shampoo (she uses this on every dog that comes to her). Then she uses a whitening shampoo. That sits for about 5 minutes Then she uses a conditioner which also sits for a few minutes. She has to be very careful while scrubbing, rinsing and drying so she doesn’t cause any matts.

I get to sit in front of 2 big dryers for about 45 minutes. Then she spends a little over an hour brushing out my hair. I walk out of her salon looking like the dog version of Fabio 😁😏

Hello my name is Jax. I am a Shihpoo. I had to have surgery on my knee. I am healing but doing well. I am still favoring that leg a little but, thankfully Christina is caring and let me lay down while I was getting groomed. I stood up when she needed me to but otherwise I laid down the whole time.

Christina said it was a good change of pace because usually I move around alot while she works on me. I just didn't feel up to it today and gave her break since she let me lay down 🙃 I am so glad I am feeling better after my surgery and now I look better too! Goodness guys I was a shaggy mess from not getting groomed for 12 weeks!

This is Cletus. He is 2 & 1/2 years old. He is a Newfoundland. He is going to help me show and explain when shaving is ok on the double coated breeds.

**long post, bear with me 😉

His last visit( 2 months ago) I spent about 3 hours brushing him. I still could not fully get through the massive amount of hair on his back legs. 3 HOURS! That is just brushing. He also had a bath (about 40 minutes) a quick 5 minutes of my high powered dryer to blow out some of the water off the hair. Then he sat with my big dryers on him in the kennel for 2 hours. It took 1 additional hour to blow dry him the rest of the way. 7 hours of working on him. He was extremely tired. So was my bather and myself. I did shave his belly and the inside of his back legs that time also.

In My Professional Opinion 7 hours is too long! It is not fair to the dog.

Last week, after a few long discussions with the owner, we decided it was best to just shave him down to 1/4 of an inch this time. Short enough to get under the packed, thick hair but still leave enough that he would not get sunburn. As you can see on the 2nd image his legs were bad. Now we will let it grow out to a manageable length. The owner and I will keep talking as we let it grow out to see how he is at home for brushing. Once he gets to where she feels it getting to hard to keep brushed we will not let it get any longer. We may also decide he loves having short hair and not let it grow much more.

I personally feel at the end of the day as a groomer I need to do what is in the best interest of the dog and the owner. Some times that includes shaving off a double coated breeds.
-Do I try not to do this? Absolutely!
-Do I tell people it is not recommended for shed control purposes? Absolutely!
-Do I tell people that it is not a way to make them cooler? Absolutely!

However, in Cletus' case shaving did make him cooler. His breed has thick long hair. His hair go so out of control from him living his best life and loving to play outside and in the water. His hair could not shed out properly. He would end up over heated when he went outside, especially this week 😳

Here is my best advice when you are unsure about what is best for your dog, ask your groomer! Have a conversation with them, express your concerns and ask what they think would be best.

This boy brings me so much joy. He has been such a working progress to figure what does and does not work for his hair. He now comes once a week for a full brush out. Finding products that help his hair has been part of the battle. Finally we found one that is amazing for him.

Never be ashamed to ask for guidance on things you are struggling with. I found a group on Facebook for Afghan Hounds and asked for help to fix his coat. They were so supportive and actually thanked me for being honest and asking for help.

Some updates coming soon!

Starting May 1st I will be following my shop policies for day boarding, late Drop off, late pick up and No Shows. I have been somewhat lax on it. However, I can no longer do that. I am working a very full schedule. Dogs showing up late mess with my Grooming schedule. Dogs getting picked up late interfere with having space for other dogs coming in for their appointments. No Shows hurt my business. I completely understand emergencies happen. However it only takes a minute to send a text or quick call me to let me know so I can possibly fill the space, or adjust my schedule.

Starting June 1st I will have my yearly price increase. It will be a 5%-10% increase depending on the size and how much work the dog is.

As always I appreciate each of you! Thank you for trusting me to keep your dogs looking pawsitively beautiful!

This was posted by another groomer and it is so true.

This can happen with any breed.
However we as groomers see it the most in doodle mixes 😔

The perfect photo (shared from another groomer) to show how matting happens at the base (or at the skin). So many doodle owners are saddened to hear the only thing I can do with their pups coat is a shave because they thought brushing the top coat was enough. By looking at this dog, you may not see the knots and you may not feel them as you would a knot on the ends of the fur but once it starts its very difficult/ impossible to brush/COMB out... Not to mention it would be cruel to put the dog through. A quick once over will not work for these guys if you want them in a fuzzy coat. You really need to sit down with a metal comb and make sure you can get it through the entire body a couple times a week.

Often times I feel like owners don't believe groomers when they say the dogs has to be clipped. I always hear "I know he/she is matted, but leave as much as you can"... this photo shows, the only way to get UNDER the matting is nothing left.
I promise you, I'd rather not clip your baby naked either! I also don't want to hurt my reputation when the clients go around complaining about how the last groomer "scalped" their dog....But doodles are easily one of the highest maintenance dogs in reference to their coats. The combination of the soft coat of a golden, or aussie, or newf, or wheaten, or whatever they are mixing poodles with these days is a coat that is SO prone to matting. And even more so are the new "double doodles" that i like to call "double maintenance".

I even find some doodles on a regular schedule still need to be clipped once or twice a year (maybe not shaved, but maybe teddy bear length for a fresh start) because after all of the brushing and de-matting, the damaged coat seems to become even MORE likely to matt.
If you like a fluffy pup, you probably need to consider no more than 3-5 week intervals between grooming and set aside time for regular COMBING at home.

Please know, if you bathe your doodle you really need to blow dry and brush out right after. Moisture, be it a bath, rain, swimming, snow etc are all going to amplify matting. And if you know your dog is already matted-- bathing is only going to make it worse! Brush out BEFORE the bath.

AND!!!!! "breeders" who say they can't/shouldnt be clipped and OR not to give them a hair cut until they are 1 year are out of their minds and setting you up for a SAD SAD SAD day when you finally take your pup to the groomer.
