Don’t let food ruin your pet’s holiday! 🎄🍽️ Food is one of the most common causes of holiday pet emergencies. Many of the treats we enjoy can pose serious health risks to our furry friends, and some can even be fatal. It’s important to be extra cautious about what your pet has access to during the holidays.

Here are some common holiday food dangers:

Dark and baker’s chocolate: While milk chocolate may cause an upset stomach, dark chocolate and baker’s chocolate contain high levels of theobromine and caffeine, which are toxic to animals. Even small amounts can cause seizures, heart issues, and potentially be fatal.

Xylitol: This sugar substitute is found in sugar-free foods, gum, and candies. It can cause a dog’s blood sugar to drop rapidly, leading to hypoglycemia. Left untreated, it can also cause liver failure. If ingested, call your vet or an emergency animal hospital immediately.

Macadamia nuts: Found in holiday snacks and desserts, macadamia nuts can cause severe weakness in the back legs and tremors in dogs. Most dogs recover fully within 24-72 hours, but immediate attention is essential.

Bread dough: If ingested, raw bread dough continues to rise in your pet’s stomach, potentially causing an intestinal blockage or gastric dilatation-volvulus. It can also lead to alcohol poisoning as the dough ferments. Keep raw dough out of reach!

Latkes and sufganiyot (Hanukkah treats): Onions in latkes can cause Heinz body anemia, and fried foods can lead to pancreatitis. These ingredients can cause severe gastrointestinal issues in pets, so keep these Hanukkah treats away from your pets!

Other holiday hazards include grapes, raisins, alcohol, and dairy products—all can cause serious health issues. If your pet accidentally ingests something harmful, don’t wait! Contact your veterinarian or an emergency animal hospital immediately.
