I'm here in Scottsdale at the Arabian Horse Show and while watching some of the competitors warming up for their class, I noticed someting.

The main thing that determines who wins in their class and who doesn’t succeed is ATTITIDE. Most competitors have really good horses, and those horses have hours and hours of training and teaching. So, they each go into the arena on horses that COULD leave as the champion. So what determines the winner? It's not the horse, it's not the judges, it's not the coaching from the rail...it's the ATTITUDE of the rider before they enter the arena.

In order to win, they have to WANT success in order to get it. They must want it so bad that they can taste it, see it, and FEEL it. You see, winning doesn’t float on clouds and it doesn't happen to just special people. It takes hard work to achieve it.

Because most people are willing to do only average work, they reap average results. To achieve super results, you must do super work, be deeply committed to the task, be willing to do whatever is necessary to realize goals and aspirations...and BELIEVE you'll win!

So here's to all the champions! Keep that winning attitude - it works in life as well as in the arena.

Use organic mulch when possible. This will preserve moisture in your soil and suppress w**d growth.

Letting broadleaf w**ds run rampant in your pastures or paddocks will cause you to lose pounds of grass and with that an increased expense or loss of profit. When you increase the amount of grass produced, you improve the flexibility of your grazing.

Know this, there is nothing you can do to control the weather, but an effective w**d control program with a well-timed herbicide application and a properly formulated fertilizer treatment will save you money. The least expensive feed for your cattle or horses is grass - period.

As a rule of thumb, consider that a grazing animal (cattle or horses) costs around $0.45 per head per day. That means in my situation, 43 grown cows with 20 calves cost about $10,000 a year, and that doesn't include the government property tax. By eliminating w**ds, I save $27 per day.

The biggest problem with w**ds in pastures is the simple fact that they more aggressively compete with the grass for sunshine, water, and nutrients.

I like to break my pasture fertilizing and spraying into quarters matching the seasons; winter, spring, summer, and fall.

Embarking on a long-distance journey with your horse soon? Whether it’s for a competition, relocation, or any other reason, ensuring your horse’s safety and comfort during long hauls is crucial. I've included some best practices for long-distance horse hauling, covering everything from preparation to post-journey care.

Long-distance transportation can be stressful for horses, posing challenges such as dehydration, fatigue, and stress. Recognizing these potential issues is the first step in planning a smooth and safe journey.

𝗣𝗿𝗲-𝗧𝗿𝗶𝗽 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: Ensure your horse is fit to travel by conducting a pre-trip veterinary check-up. Vaccinations, health certificates, and Coggins tests are essential for a hassle-free journey.
Acclimate your horse to the trailer to reduce travel anxiety. Short, positive loading and unloading sessions can make a big difference.
Prepare a travel kit including water, hay, horse feed, and emergency supplies. Don’t forget your horse’s stable toys or blankets for comfort.

𝗗𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗝𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗲𝘆: Plan for regular breaks every 3-4 hours to check on your horse, offering water and a chance to just stand and rest.
Ensure the trailer is well-ventilated to keep the air fresh and temperature regulated.
Keep an eye on your horse’s behavior and signs of distress. Portable cameras in the trailer can be a great aid.

𝗔𝗿𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗮𝗹 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗲: Upon arrival, perform a health check to look for any signs of injury or distress.
Provide ample water and a light meal after arrival. Monitor your horse's appetite and water intake.
Allow your horse ample time to rest and recover from the journey in a comfortable, quiet environment.

𝗚𝗥𝗔𝗭𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗔𝗟𝗘𝗥𝗧: 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗛𝗼𝗿𝘀𝗲𝘀 𝗙𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗛𝗶𝗱𝗱𝗲𝗻 𝗣𝗮𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗣𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗹𝘀!

We all love the sight of our horses grazing peacefully, but it's crucial to stay vigilant about the hidden health risks lurking in our pastures. Here's what you need to know to keep your animals healthy and happy:

𝗟𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘀: This painful condition affects the horse's hooves and can be triggered by excessive intake of rich grasses. Monitor your horse’s grazing time, especially during spring when grass sugar content peaks. Early mornings should be avoided and limit grazing time to 3-4 hours maximum.

𝗖𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗰: Sudden changes in diet or overconsumption of lush grass can lead to digestive disturbances, even colic, in horses. Gradually introduce horses to pasture. Again I suggest a 3-4 hour period for a few days increasing by 2 hours or so every week until you reach the desired pasture time. Also, ensure a consistent diet to minimize risks, this means don't alter their feed or their feeding times.

𝗣𝗮𝗿𝗮𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗲 𝗜𝗻𝗳𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: Pastures, especially overgrazed ones, can be breeding grounds for parasites that affect your horse's health. Regular deworming, every 2-3 months, and pasture management (like rotating grazing areas) are key to controlling parasite load. In addition, consider breaking up the piles of manure in the pasture. Horses will usually identify a specific area for this, so it should not pose a problem to drag the area at least weekly.

𝗧𝗼𝘅𝗶𝗰 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗻𝘁𝘀: Make a point to maintain your pastures. Be aware of toxic plants that might be present in your pasture. Plants like ragwort, foxglove, and many others can be deadly if ingested. Regularly inspect and remove any harmful plants from grazing areas. Plus, consider setting up a regular mowing schedule.

𝗢𝗯𝗲𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘆: Unlimited access to pasture can lead to weight gain and associated health issues in horses. This means, keep your eyes on the overall body condition of your animals. Your horses can gain weight rapidly, and they can lose it rapidly as well. Implement controlled grazing practices to maintain a healthy body condition for your horses.

𝗣𝗿𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗧𝗶𝗽𝘀 𝗥𝗲𝘃𝗶𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗱:

Regularly check your pastures for hazards and remove any toxic plants.
Implement a rotational grazing system to manage grass intake and reduce parasite exposure.
Monitor your horse's health and body condition closely, adjusting their diet and grazing time as necessary.
Consult with a veterinarian for personalized advice and to establish a regular deworming schedule.

So, I came across something interesting in The Wall Street Journal the other day. It turns out, about half of the pet parents surveyed by Zappi are really trying to cut back on pet-care costs. It seems like quite a few are skipping those yearly check-ups and shots, and even some of the usual care routines, opting to try things out on their own instead.

These folks are on the lookout for a wallet-friendly way to keep their furry friends healthy. They totally get the importance of keeping up with all the vet-recommended shots and deworming schedules, but, you know, money's a bit tight these days, and they're finding themselves having to think outside the box.

Here's the scoop on parasites – they can be super sneaky. Your pet might have worms hanging out in their intestines and not act any different until things get really serious. To spot hookworms and whipworms, a vet's gotta check out a stool sample for eggs. Tapeworms and roundworms might actually show up in your pet's p**p or even their vomit.

If your pet starts vomiting, gets diarrhea, sports an unusually round belly, or their coat starts looking less than fabulous, parasites might be the culprits. And yep, these nasty bugs can spread from one animal to another. Did you know many puppies come into the world already dealing with parasites they got from their mom?

In Part 3 of our "Maximizing Horse Health Through Effective Pasture Care series, we're exploring the vital practice of pasture rotation. Let's dive into how this technique can prevent overgrazing and maintain grass quality."

𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗣𝗮𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗥𝗼𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻?

Because overgrazing can damage pasture health long term. On the other hand, rotation aids in grass growth recovery. When horses graze the same area continuously, they tend to eat the most palatable grasses down to the roots, which can kill the grass. Rotation allows grazed areas time to recover and regrow before they are grazed again.
Overgrazing often leads to bare patches in the pasture, which are prime spots for w**ds to grow. By allowing grass to maintain healthy growth, pasture rotation helps to naturally suppress w**d growth.
Pasture rotation can help break the life cycle of parasites. When horses are moved to a new pasture, they leave behind parasite eggs and larvae, reducing the risk of re-infestation.

Rotating pastures can lead to more nutritious, dense, and resilient grasslands and this means better nutrition for your animals. It also allows grasses to go through their natural growth cycles without being constantly eaten down. This leads to stronger, healthier grass that can withstand grazing and environmental stresses better.

Effective Pasture Rotation Techniques:

Create multiple smaller paddocks to rotate your horses through. This gives areas time to recover. The number and size of paddocks depends on the size of your property, the number of horses you have grazing at all times, and the quality of the grasses in your pasture.

Controlled grazing time is the key! Rotate before the grass is grazed too short. We'll tell you the optimal height for rotation. The grazing period depends on the forage availability and growth rate, usually ranging from a few days to a couple of weeks. How do you know when to rotate? Move horses to a new paddock when the grass is grazed down to a certain height (often about 3 to 4 inches).

Adjust the rotation plan according to the seasons for maximum pasture health. Grass grows faster in spring and slower in summer and fall, which should be reflected in rotation frequency and duration. During periods of slow pasture growth, consider supplemental feeding to reduce the grazing pressure on the pastures.

𝗧𝗶𝗽𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗦𝘂𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗳𝘂𝗹 𝗣𝗮𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗥𝗼𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻:

𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗽𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗘𝗻𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗡𝘂𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁-𝗥𝗶𝗰𝗵 𝗦𝗼𝗶𝗹:

𝗦𝗼𝗶𝗹 𝗧𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴: This is a critical component of pasture management for livestock owners. It provides essential information about the nutrient content and pH level of the soil, which directly impacts the growth and quality of pasture grass. Understanding your soil's condition helps in making informed decisions about fertilization, liming, and overall pasture management.

Testing will identify deficiencies in essential nutrients like nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium (potash), all of which are vital for healthy grass growth.

Soil pH testing provides the acidity or alkalinity of the pasture. Most grasses prefer a pH level between 6.0 and 7.0. Levels outside of this range can limit not only nutrient levels but also grass growth.

By determining these factors, tailored fertilization can ensure that the pasture needs can be met with a custom fertilizer blend. At Conroe Feeders Supply, we are proud to help you with whatever your pasture needs demand.

One of the most overlooked factors in pasture care is the soil organic level. We can, by reviewing your sample results, determine whether you should add carbonic matter (organic material) to improve soil health.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗖𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝗼𝗶𝗹 𝗦𝗮𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝘀: Timing is important. The best time to test your soil is in the late summer or early fall...or in the spring before your first fertilizer application. You need an auger, a shovel, or a soil probe plus a clean bucket.

Divide your pasture into sections based on the types of terrain and collect samples from different spots in each section. Make sure you get 3-6 inches deep in the sample collection process. Remove all surface grass, thatch, or debris from your collection. Place each collection in the bucket and mix thoroughly. (If your samples are wet, spread them out on a clean paper and let them 𝗮𝗶𝗿 𝗱𝗿𝘆 before placing them into a sample bag.

Make sure you clearly label your sample bag and send it along with the required documentation to your local soil testing lab.

Introduction: "Good morning! In this, the first part of a series discussing pasture care, I’d like to point out how crucial pasture care is for the health and well-being of your horses.

Most people aren’t aware that the type of grass in your pasture can significantly impact your horse's health. In the Gulf Coast area of Texas, selecting the right type of grass for horse pastures is essential for the health and well-being of your horses. Here are some suitable grass types for this region, along with their advantages and disadvantages.

𝗕𝗲𝗿𝗺𝘂𝗱𝗮 𝗚𝗿𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗲𝘀 – 𝗢𝘂𝗿 𝗙𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝗖𝗵𝗼𝗶𝗰𝗲: There are multiple varieties and hybrids advertised online making it difficult to choose which one might work best for your particular soil type, grazing concentration, and average temperature. Seeding and sprigging are the most common methods of planting.

Checking with our local Agricultural Extension Agent is probably a great place to start.

Coastal Bermuda, Common Bermuda, Texas Tuff Bermuda, and probably every other type will have some advantages and of course some disadvantages as well. For the most part, bermuda grasses are drought and pest tolerant (not resistant), provide adequate yield, and adequate nutrition.

They will go dormant in winter months so the nutritional value drops. They do require good management practices including soil fertilization and w**d control. (We will discuss these two aspects of pasture care in the following parts.)

𝗕𝗮𝗵𝗶𝗮 𝗚𝗿𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗲𝘀 – 𝗢𝘂𝗿 𝗦𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗱 𝗖𝗵𝗼𝗶𝗰𝗲: Again, multiple varieties and hybrids are advertised online making a difficult choice once again. Pensacola Bahia and Tifton 9 are the most popular. Seeding is the most common method of planting.

Bahia grasses are known for their durability, low management requirements, and have a significant level of resistance to pets and disease. On a good note, they are perfect for sandy loam, acidic soil which makes them perfect for planting south of the Lufkin/Crockett area of Texas. A side benefit, if you can call it that, is the fact that it can survive and thrive in infertile soils.

Bahia grasses tolerate milder winter climates like the Gulf Coast Area of Texas, but they cannot tolerate drought conditions as effectively as the Bermudas.

The negative side for Bahia grasses lies in the fact that it has a noticeably lower nutritional value and horses often find it less palatable.

𝗥𝘆𝗲𝗴𝗿𝗮𝘀𝘀 – 𝗢𝘂𝗿 𝗖𝗵𝗼𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗙𝗼𝗿 𝗙𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗪𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗚𝗿𝗮𝘇𝗶𝗻𝗴: This is a fast growing cool-season grass available again in multiple varieties and hybrids. Ryegrass is most commonly overseeded on Bermudas for winter grazing.

It does supply nutrients when grazed, and without a doubt it reduces the volume requirement of hay in your animal’s diet.

Recognize this grass grows only in colder temperatures (meaning it doesn’t survive in the hot summer months of the Texas Gulf Coast Area) and requires annual replanting unless a perennial seed type is used.

In addition to the nutritional benefits of winter ryegrass, its deep roots help prevent soil erosion during the more wet and harsh winter months. As temperatures rise, ryegrass goes dormant, dies, and breaks down, adding beneficial organic matter and even some nitrogen back into the soil.

𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗽𝗲𝘁𝗴𝗿𝗮𝘀𝘀 – 𝗢𝘂𝗿 𝗖𝗵𝗼𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗙𝗼𝗿 𝗘𝘅𝘁𝗿𝗮 𝗪𝗲𝘁, 𝗟𝗼𝘄 𝗙𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗔𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘀: Carpetgrass is easy to establish probably because it tolerates low fertility soils. In addition, it doesn’t really care about the nature of the soil, sandy, salty, clay, loam, moist, or super wet.

Carpetgrass is not one of our choices for meeting nutritional requirements of horses. It cannot stand heavy grazing pressure. Plus, it is very susceptible to diseases like brown patch, drought intolerant, and when conditions, like winter frosts occur, it dies, producing a recognizable foul odor.

𝗕𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗧𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗶𝗾𝘂𝗲𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗟𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗰𝗸 𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝗧𝗲𝗺𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲𝘀 𝗗𝗿𝗼𝗽 𝗕𝗲𝗹𝗼𝘄 𝗙𝗿𝗲𝗲𝘇𝗶𝗻𝗴

At Conroe Feeders Supply, we understand the challenges that come with keeping your livestock healthy and comfortable during the colder months. As temperatures drop below freezing, it's crucial to take extra care of your animals. Here are our top tips for livestock care in cold weather:

🔹 𝗘𝗻𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗔𝗱𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗦𝗵𝗲𝗹𝘁𝗲𝗿: Provide a dry, windproof shelter. This reduces the risk of cold stress and keeps your animals warm and comfortable. If you have a shelter for them, use plywood or tarps on open sides to break the cold wind. It's also a good idea to use heat lamps when the area safely permits.

🔹 𝗜𝗻𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲 𝗙𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲: Animals need more energy to maintain body heat in cold weather. Providing extra feed helps them stay warm and maintain a healthy weight. Free choice grass hay works well for this. If availability restricts hay selection, use pelleted bermuda or timothy. Adding an extra mid-day feeding also works well.

🔹 𝗔𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗙𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗵, 𝗨𝗻𝗳𝗿𝗼𝘇𝗲𝗻 𝗪𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿: Regularly check water sources to ensure they are not frozen. Hydration is key to maintaining health in cold conditions. Bucket and trough heaters work well. When they aren't available, use buckets of hot water from inside your home to break through the ice and provide consumable water. At least have a hammer, hatchet, or even a piece of rebar that can be used to break the ice covering if the freeze doesn't result in a complete block of ice in the bucket or trough.

🔹 𝗕𝗲𝗱𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: Thick, dry bedding provides insulation from the cold ground and helps animals retain their body heat. This is important. You can bed with shavings making sure your bedding is at least 6-8 inches deep. If this isn't possible, try bedding straw. And, if that isn't available, use grass hay.

🔹 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗘𝗹𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀: Use blankets for extra vulnerable animals, especially in extremely cold temperatures. Commercially designed products are usually available. If you don't have any, use a blanket from your home and tie using hay string.
