We're hearing that processors are getting really full right now. If you are considering having your deer mounted, please stop by to see us before going to the processor. If they are backed up, they will not be able to cape out your hide until tomorrow or even Tuesday. Time is not your friend for keeping a hide in good shape.

I'll be happy to skin your deer today, and can even help you with quartering it out if you prefer to butcher your own at home. As always, call if you have any questions: 931-372-2784

Jeremy's birthday fell on opening day of rifle and he got a big one! But he had a long carry out, so Ian's mushing dogs stepped in to help! Happy birthday, Jeremy!

Your daily reminder that ice and timing are critical if you take down a deer today!

If you plan on taking to the woods to hunt for the first archery weekend of the year, consider taking a cooler full of ice with you. Heat is your enemy. As soon as you drop a deer, you need to field dress it immediately then pack the cavity with ice. If you plan to have the deer mounted, get ice on the neck and head.

TN's August archery season opens tomorrow! Here are some important tips to keep in mind:

1. Make sure to take a cooler full of ice with you when you head to the woods. You will need to field dress your deer IMMEDIATELY, then fill the cavity with ice right right away to drop the body temp, otherwise the meat and the hide will begin to ruin quickly. If the hide stays too warm, the hair will begin to slip, and it will not be suitable for mounting.

2. If the antlers are in velvet, DO NOT drag the deer by the antlers. Keep them off the ground as you get the deer back to your truck.

3. Bring the deer to your taxidermist before the processor. If you want to preserve the velvet, we will need to begin treating the antlers as soon possible. Time is critical.

Sometimes I've got to get out of the shop for a few minutes and take a walk to clear my head. It also helps to see colors in natural lighting as I'm working on painting fish.
