Dutchess County Fair ~ 8/21/2024

What a long day!!! Sky Farm rider’s nerves were high, the competition was fierce, and the classes were large, but the horses were well behaved! The riders did their very best to navigate the warm up and their classes, but nonetheless ribbons were hard to come by. However, a good and safe day was had by all!

Thank you to Lorna for for coming to groom/assist and to those who came to cheer the riders/horses(pony) on. Your support is much appreciated and welcomed.

Now….. for the highlights….

Guess who won their stakes class for hunters?

Guess who competed in their first off farm show for the first time ever?

Guess who was in ther first group canter class?

Guess who rode “Ginger” in complete control (well except for the poles class when she got a little bit too excited!!!!)?😜

“Welcome to the Airport”

That was our theme this year at D4K. What a year it was to compete in a hurricane!! I cannot say how proud I was of this group of horses and their riders. They all did the best they could with the situation at hand. Anxiety ran high and they were all tested. We had many horse changes, last minute tack adjustments, ride time adjustments, and it poured!!! But it was a super fun time and accomplishments were had by all. Everyone was so helpful and supportive of each other. Thank you ladies for that.

I’m working on a video to share. But here’s a sneak peek of some of my favorite pictures.

Thank you so so much to Tasha from traveling all the way up from Florida time and time again to help me coach. I know this year was rough…. We appreciate you so much and are so thankful that you donate your time and energy.

Thanks for supporting D4K too!!!

Well…. Millbrook Horse Trials 2024 is in the books and surprise “Wave” went… last minute “Lilly” had to sit the bench. We decided to ask “Wave” to step up with only one day to practice. Jillian felt she was confident enough to try to adjust her style to suit his. They pulled off a 6th place finish!!!
Congratulations to this pair!!!! I am so proud 🙂
Thank you to Micheal for grooming Friday and to Quinn and Abby for grooming Saturday.
Logan was a fence judge Friday at fence 4 on XC🙂

Welcome “Ace” ~ his registered name is Aces Mark and he is a 16.2 hand 20-year-old thoroughbred gelding. His owner is Christina Westerfeld who is due to have a baby in August 2024!!! She graciously leased Ace to Sky Farm so that he can help teach in the lesson program. Christina has owned him since his racing career ended in 2010 and she has done many things with him, including tons of trail rides and jumping, and many other things. Since October 2023, until this past Sunday, Ace was helping at a local therapeutic barn. This boy has more whoa then go, but he is very handsome, and as you can tell he and Harriet get along just fine!

“Shiloh” and Pam left yesterday for a two week adventure. They will be enjoying some horsemanship training with Luke Gingrich in Plain City, Ohio!

Have a blast and we can’t want to hear how it goes.

Despite the 🌧️ ☔️ rain on Saturday (6/29/24) and a 7:26 am ride time to boot… “Lilly” and Jillian put in a good effort at Larkin Hill Horse Trials.
As you can see they had 🤩 fun!
Congratulations to Michael… he was XC judge #4!!!

Two weeks ago Sky Farm welcomed a new mare🙂

Meet “Pearl” ~ registered name = Picture Perfect

She is 21-year-old Holsteiner cross who spent the majority of her life show jumping at the top level and the past 8 years as a broodmare. The dapple grey and the foal pictured are her offspring.
Yes, the jumping picture is of her.
We plan for her to join the program as soon as she makes friends with Harriet 😂

GMHA Horse Trails in VT- June 1st & 2nd, 2024

Well… this weekend didn’t go as planned but thankfully “Wave”, “Lilly”, & “Jazz” all made it back to NY in one piece and so did their riders 🙂 we are all glad to be home 🙂 phew! 😮‍💨

Lendon Gray often shares her wisdom with young riders before they compete in the Youth Dressage Festival in Saugertise, NY. I remember a speech she gave and I hope I am sharing some of what she said correctly… with my own little spin on it of course 🙂
I think it is helpful to consider her point after this weekend. Many people struggled!

Sometimes we ride and win and we give it our all, sometimes we ride and we lose and give it our all, and most times we place someplace in the middle… unfortunately sometime someone might fall and leave with EMS… someone near us could be having the worst ride of their life or the opposite and just had the best ride of their life. Someone else might just be trying to stay in the arena or taking their horse to their first rated show. Whoever they are… show them respect and know that you will most likely experience all of those rides one day. Riding is hard but it’s the hard that makes it great and the great that makes it special. Enjoy the ride and the horse that you get to spend time with because it isn’t forever. Stay safe.

Ps- 6/1/24 was Jillian’s B-day- she was busy competing but happy birthday shout out to her and congratulations on 8th place finish for her and “Lilly”.

New York Adventure 5 26, 2024

The ride was beautiful, well marked, and a great adventure! Some fun was had but overall a challenging day! It was a good reminder that we should always expect the unexpected! Our original thought was that the ladies would out run “Sonic” and he would retire half way. This is what we prepared for and planned on. However, this is what actually happened 🙂

“May” was pulled after 20 miles due to what we presume was a stone bruise. We think we know exactly where she did it! She is in a good mood and seems sound now. She was strong on the trail and had a blast. “Lilly” was super happy to have her pasture pal with her so she was a bit distracted. In addition to that distraction, a handful of horses got loose at camp in the middle of the night. This caused her to eat less than she should have and so she ran out of fuel about 5 miles from the halfway hold/vet check. The first half was long at approximately 20 miles. She got some lactic acid build up behind, got tight, and was also pulled at 20 miles. She also is fine and was trotting up her hill last night. “Sonic” finished 9th but brought his stallion show off attitude with him and acted a bit like he was untrained 🙂 He was very upset to ride without friends the second half but he did it! He was very strong and healthy overall!

Thank you to Logan and Tori for coming along to crew. We couldn’t have done it without help. We really appreciate the support.

Good job to Jillian and “Lilly” for their 3rd place finish out of 13. What a way to start the season 🙂

We knew “Sonic” would probably be a bit nervous to be in front of such a large crowd… but when he got the opportunity to participate in the Morgan Horse Demo we didn’t hesitate…. He is half Morgan after all. As many of you know he is shy with new people so what a unique experience for him and a great confidence builder. This was his first time in a setting like this and he handled it. Plus, this was particularly difficult because he was stabled next to mares (show secretary choice not ours…) so just leaving them behind at the stable was a hard ask (:

World Horse Expo, Harrisburg, PA 3/2/2024. The pair participated in the Don Schramm clinic (demo rider). The clinic was on grid work for jumping with focus on stride and technique.

It is with a heavy heart that we share the news that “Chance” has crossed the rainbow bridge. He passed unexpectedly this morning. Last night, Summer woke up with a feeling that something was wrong and went down to check on her horses at approximately 10 pm…. everything was fine… but then this morning it was very not fine. Please hold Summer and her family in your thoughts. This is a difficult time. What a true partner, friend, and sweet boy Chancey was. A pleasure to ride, train, and take care of. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

A huge congratulations to Pam on the purchase of her first horse! Pam plans to take it slow with “Shiloh” and wants to spend most of this winter getting to know him. Pam’s goal is to enjoy liberty work and to eventually ride western.

Guess they were happy to be without jackets 🙂
