Maddie learning to Target my hand with her nose… i.e touch my hand gently. Useful also in final arrival in come when called.

This is my 9 week old Maddie learning that ‘fanny on floor’ earns her yummy treats and praise. I am not telling her to SIT. She doesn’t speak “human” and has no idea what the word means. This is an example of volitional learning…i/e. dog figures out on their own that a certain behavior gets rewarded. SIT is an instruction word. Join me for one of my Puppy or Beginning classes and learn how we get the instruction cue word associated with a volitionally learned behavior. No fear, no force involved.

CLEANING THOSE PUPPY POTTY ACCIDENTS

So your new puppy has had a urine accident. How you clean is important. My two favorite cleaning products are Nature's Miracle and Anti-Icky-Poo (yes, a funny name but works really well). If you find the accident while the urine is still fully sitting on top of the carpet you just clean the area you see. If it has soaked into the carpet you need to clean a much bigger area because it has soaked down and spread. Think of a donut...the small hole in the middle is what you see on top of the carpet...the outside edge of the donut is where. the urine has probably spread under the surface. You need to clean the whole donut. Urine accident on a hard surface?...just clean what you see.
Love your puppy anyway!

NEW PUPPY TIPS
Now that you have your new puppy, you will be working on potty training. Ask three trainers how to do this, and you may get 3 different answers😊. Here is what I have done with my own dogs as puppies.

1 - Take them outside every time they wake up, eat, drink, play, or 'it's been a while.

2 - Go out on a leash to the area you want them to eliminate.
If no 'deposits' in 3 to 5 minutes go back inside and put your pup in a potty safe area...remember the playpen recommended in the previous tip?'
Try again 20-30 minutes later. If your puppy 'goes' have a party the instant the last drop hits....Yay!, Praise!, Treat or Toy!, unleash for free play in the yard! When you go back in puppy can now be loose in the house AS LONG AS YOU ARE SUPERVISING.

3 - Keep a log of when your puppy eliminates and what was happening just before. This is a huge help in knowing when to start this process again. If you find an accident in the house, just clean it up. Don't show your puppy and scold or punish. Call, text, or email me for more in-depth help.

Getting a new puppy?

I have some helpful tips that I will share over the next week.

Tip 1. Housing your puppy safely
There are numerous options, my two favorites are a crate for sleeping at night or when no one is home. The second is a doggy play pen/x-pen for when you are home but not able to supervise. The three most important words in puppy raising are Supervision, Supervision, Supervision.

Best placement? Place where your puppy can see you.

At night best kennel placement is in an adult's bedroom.

Please feel free to call if you are looking for more details in regards to this information.

Additional Tips for playpen placement:
1, To not damage floors (Hardwood/Carpeting) get a 6X8 flooring remnant from Home Depot or Lows to place playpen on.
