Your dog loves you. You are your companion’s entire world. Your dog cools its body though its paws. When you walk your dog on hot sidewalks, you are reducing your pets’ ability to cool its blood. You are causing heatstroke. Please, please don’t walk your dog on hot sidewalks !

I’d love to have a conversation about avoiding over heating in dogs. We all know that it can be a life or death issue for all dogs, but the fact is that my Skip overheats easily. Very, very easily. It may be that his bad heart is the only factor, or perhaps there are others, […]

It drives me crazy when I see people walking their dogs on the sidewalk when it’s 115 degrees. Of course, the people are wearing shoes!

Dear Mom and Dad" (dogs point of view)
Let me stay home. It's not nice for me to walk and run next to you. But because I am a loyal dog, I often go beyond my limits. So I walk and run beside you, standing still if I have to. And feel my paws burn.
I'm looking at you for a moment, but you do not understand. Because in a little over 5 minutes we're at the cool puddle, right? But those little 5 minutes can be fatal to me. Because I sweat through my paws, and in this heat I just can not get rid of the sweat. My whole body is boiling, but I keep going .....
And then I end up on the tarmac. In the heat and in the sun. With my tongue out of my mouth and my eyes flashing in the sun. My paws are burning, my tongue is dry and my head is pounding in the heat that my body cannot get rid of ...
Instead, let me stay at home where I can enjoy the sun, with a large bowl of water, somewhere in the shade. And best of all like in a cool area with grass.
Love
Your dog

THE 10 COMMANDMENTS OF CANINE RESPECT

1. Don’t get frustrated with him if he doesn’t seem to be listening or continually does something wrong. Not only does he not speak “human”, but he sees the world quite differently than we do. He’s not a mind-reader… he doesn’t understand vague commands, or our fickle tendencies. We need to be patient and loving. He tries real hard to understand our world… we need to try to understand his.

2. Respect his instincts. Try not to get “all human on him” when he sniffs dog butts, or insists on “digging to china” before bedding down (when you’re trying to sleep); or “cleans himself” in what we consider the most grotesque of ways… He’s just doing what he instinctively knows to do. Of course, you must correct him if he does something socially unacceptable, but not allowing him to be a dog will be very disorienting for him.

3. Don’t bother him when he’s sleeping. You don’t like to be disturbed when you’re sleeping. Resist the urge to pet him or create disturbances when he is trying to sleep. Likewise, don’t bother him when he’s eating. That’s just not fair. Eating is a pleasurable time for him. Let him enjoy it.

4. Speak calmly to him. Yelling does nothing more than confuse and increase tension. It will also cause your dog to create a negative association between yelling and how he feels about you.

5. Always be mindful of your responsibility to take care of him and protect him. It’s not okay to deny him his potty-walk before bed “just this one time” … or withhold his evening meal just because you’re too tired to fix it… Or not have his nails trimmed because it’s too much trouble… Or not tend to his possible discomfort (itching, limp, etc.) because “it’ll go away” … I could go on and on, but you get the idea.

6. Don’t touch him where he does not want to be touched. This will vary from dog to dog, but if your dog gives out a signal that he doesn’t like the top of his head petted, then pat his back or scratch under his chin.

7. Don’t laugh at him, tease him, or make him out to be the clown. Dogs love making us laugh, but making them the blunt of a joke is just wrong. You’ve seen the YouTube videos… people are not intending to be cruel, but they’re doing something like putting an uncomfortable outfit or prop of some sort on a dog and then laughing at him while he deals with it. How very crude and insolent. They deserve better than that.

8. Don’t let children pick on him. If your 2-year old thinks it’s funny to pull the dog’s tail, speak up for your dog. He can’t speak for himself. Dogs are not play toys.

9. Be consistent…. In everything you do. Whether it be teaching him, or just our temperament towards him. He already has to live in a world that is somewhat foreign to him… don’t make it any harder on him. Different actions require different responses from him, and it can be so bewildering.

10. Don’t ignore your dog. You chose him to spend his life with you. He has no choice in the matter. Talk to him, and regularly include him in your family’s activities. The bond that will develop between you will add so much the quality of his life and yours

🛇 Use your Manners! 🛇
The Sniff test - Stop doing that!
The sniff test - a badly engrained habit that society has been taught, without a clear understanding of what they're actually doing.

🚩When you reach out towards a dog, you are using body pressure AT them, giving them no time to assess whether you are safe & whether they require further investigation to pick up your information. You are forcing an interaction of a relationship that hasn't had time to develop. To some dogs, this is quite rude & the reason a lot of dogs snap at or bite people. This can cause alot of behavioral issues because of layered stress due to forced interactions.

🚩If they are on lead, they have no where to go if they are sensitive to spacial pressure, so can end up shutting down, shying away or snapping at your hand so you back off. This is an example of how a dog is now using pressure to turn off pressure & make you back off so they aren't so stressed.

🚩People think by offering your hand it can give the dog time to sniff to know you're friendly... they can sniff without being forced to sniff your hand.Their noses are far more superior than ours & they don't need close contact forced upon them to smell you.

🚩Some dogs might not want to know you. You have no relationship with them and that's perfectly fine. They aren't your dog so you don't need to touch them or steal pats for your own satisfaction.

🤔 If you are meeting a dog, what should you do?
⚠Ask the owner if you can interact with their dog. Not all people want strangers touching their dogs. Especially strangers who you are unlikely to see again.
⚠Stand up straight & relaxed, with your hands at your side.
⚠Ignore the dog & talk to the owner.
⚠Don't stare at the dog & don't try to force an interaction by going in for a pat. If the dog wants to know you, it will come up to you & sniff around. Usually they will move away & then come back for a second sniffathon. Some dogs will bunt your hands & wag their tails, which are good signs that you're likely an accepted new friend. Give them a few slow pats down their back (NOT THEIR HEAD) & then stop. Is the dog happy? Has it accepted your interaction? This will determine whether you can give it more pats.

🐶This is a more stress free option for dogs & a reason why in consultations we can develop a good level of trust, especially with fearful dogs & aggressive dogs, without a bunch of negative side effects from forced interactions.
