When I was a less experienced trainer I always thought of food aggression in dogs as an issue of poor pack hierarchy in the home. I know many dog trainers continue to believe this. Today I know better. I wasnโ€™t completely wrong back then, my knowledge was just incomplete. Food aggression in dogs can certainly be a rank issue but most of the time it just isnโ€™t.

We generally distinguish two types of food aggression in dogs: a genetic predisposition and a learned behavior. The former is more common and has to be managed and the latter is less common but can be resolved.

Guest Post by internationally acknowledged dog trainer Chad Mackin.

Iโ€™ve been seeing a lot of posts about pit bulls lately. Some written in defense of them, others on why their history makes them more dangerous than other dogs. Almost everything Iโ€™ve read misses the point in big ways. So, letโ€™s get our hands dirty and get into some controversy, shall we?

If you take either of the following lines about pit bulls, you are probably not going to like what I will say.

Contrary to what many believe, it isnโ€™t all in how you raise them. The fact that pit bulls were originally bred for fighting doesnโ€™t automatically make them aggressive. And no, they were never (as far as I can tell) called "Nanny Dogs."

Stress in dogs is a fact of life. We all experience stress every day and must learn to develop some resilience to the daily life stresses we deal with. People without the ability to handle stress, canโ€™t function in our world. This is the reason we coach our children how to maneuver life, but donโ€™t do everything for them. We canโ€™t shield them from everything as they grow up if we want them to be successful adults who live a rich life. Our kids need to learn how to cope with stress and not break when then things go wrong because they will. This is no different for dogs.

Every dog finds forced isolation unpleasant. No dog enjoys you going to work and leaving them alone for eight to ten hours a day. Dogs are social creatures. While dogs sleep a lot and do need their alone time, most of the time, they would rather be with you, than away from you. Some dogs just handle this separation better than others. However, separation anxiety in dogs goes far beyond this basic reality.

Dogs are amazing. Our wonderful companions bring us endless joy and happiness. We play together, hike together, run together, sleep together, eat together and so much more. Our dogs are valued family members that love us unconditionally. We take care of them as best as we can and they return the favor. Having a dog in your life is enriching beyond imagination. Unfortunately, we all have to say goodbye to our dog at some point.

Dogs love to play! Some dogs prefer playing with toys and will enjoy some toys more than others. Some dogs enjoy playing with food and some dogs enjoy personal play. Just like with humans, Play is an essential part of canine development. Dogs that play and socialize regularly are healthier, more balanced, more curious, calmer, less reactive and just a lot more fun to live with.

If you want to have the best relationship you can have with your dog and you want your friend to be happy, make sure your furry family member gets to play with you, with other dogs, and with toys.

Play is fun, helps learning and supports mental health.

For this reason, play-based-training is the most enjoyable for your dog and leads to the fastest training results, while also improving your relationship. If learning doesnโ€™t feel like work, you want to do more and learn faster, that is no different for your dog.

I am not a veterinarian and am not permitted to give medical advice regarding canine health. I am not going to. I am going to share some publicly available information, published by the National Institute of Health and other reputable and well-respected veterinary scientists. The studies I am going to share are something every dog owner should know about. Their findings indicate, that some things we have become accustomed to doing to our dogs, are ill-advised and need a fresh look. I am also going to outline some of my own decisions and opinions formed based on this information.

Leash aggression in dogs is one of those phrases we hear regularly. Most dog owners use this term if their dog loses their mind at other dogs, or people, or cars, or bikes, or whatever, when on a leash. Off-leash the dog may even be totally fine. Just on a leash, it acts like a lunatic. And there is of course the close relative of this term, leash-reactivity. Both are used quite interchangeably, so for the purpose of explaining this behavior, I will stick with leash aggression as it is probably more commonly used.

But what does leash aggression actually mean? Itโ€™s a pretty useless phrase as it doesnโ€™t provide any kind of description of what is happening. It just indicates that a dog is having an aggressive reaction for some reason.
