A lot of stir this weekend in the industry over some video clips of a training session with decorated, accomplished and proven master horsewoman Katie Prudent. An insecure and fearful mind will defend against criticism and attack the messenger, while a rider with a learning mindset can view high expectations and direct constructive criticism as a vehicle for their transformation. Remember, your coach WANTS to see you succeed. Katie Prudent is using her expertise to build the next generation. We need this level of discipline and decorum at the highest levels, period. That is how riders of all levels maintain integrity, which is the most basic responsibility of anyone choosing to participate in these sports.
If your coach is tough on you, it means they believe in you. It means they are taking your goals seriously. Most importantly, it means they are advocating for the horse.
Pressure can be intimidating, and being humbled is never fun. However, avoiding them can mean missing out on some of the most important lessons that this sport can give us.
Standing in the midst of her gymnastics course, show jumping legend Katie Prudent put her hand up to her purple visor to block out the sun as she squinted up at six young riders trotting around her. Her floral shirt blew in the warm breeze, and she took a deep breath before she spoke.
