I've decided to take the leap to my next chapter in my grooming career and will be moving salons. I will be located in South St. Paul, working for a small company called PetFresh! I will be working in the new space starting 𝗝𝗨𝗡𝗘 𝟯𝗥𝗗. I am now booking new and existing clients.

While many groomers and most pet owners refer to them as 'nails', canines and felines actually have claws. What's the difference? We're glad you asked!

1. Nails are composed of keratinized protein that hardens and grows from the end of our fingers and toes. This keratin is not attached to bone, blood vessels, or nerves. This is why we can clip our nails without pain to any length we choose.

2. Claws too are composed of keratin, however the canine & feline claw grow directly from the ungual bone. Each claw has a blood vessel and nerve directly attached. This is why many pets are leery about having their feet touched. It is also why many dogs and cats hate nail trims. The pressure needed to trim with nail clippers is often uncomfortable and causes the pet to struggle.

3. Feline claws cannot be filed as the keratin grows in layers much like an onion and they will shatter. However, it is extremely common for canines to have their nails filed. If filing is not properly performed, heat travels into the ungual nerve and causes pain. Filing should be done using a tapping motion of two or three seconds at a time as to prevent this from happening.

4. Claws can only be trimmed as far as the quick. This may mean that the claws are not as short as you and/or the owner would like. However, having nails trimmed weekly until they reach the desired length is recommended.

Talk to your professional groomer about an appropriate schedule for your pet to get those claws in good shape and keep them that way!

There is a huge misconception among pet owners that pets do not benefit from grooming in the winter months. Nothing could be farther from the truth. When it comes to winter grooming there are a few things your groomer needs you to know.

1. Pets will be cold if groomed in the winter - This is a very common misconception especially with fur bearing breeds. Dogs and cats keep warm (and cool) through thermoregulation. Not being groomed means that dead undercoat can become packed. This prevents the coat from properly functioning by holding warm air near the body.
Keeping your pet on schedule means that your professional groomer can keep your pets coat in working condition.

2. He/she will be warmer if the coat is longer - This misconception most commonly affects hair bearing breeds. But the truth is an inch or two of longer coat makes no difference in the pets ability to thermoregulate. In fact, longer coat means a larger potential for matting, especially if not on a regular schedule. Many pet owners use coats, jackets, or sweaters for their pets which adds to this potential.

3. Whether a packed coat or a matted coat, both lead to skin problems. A coat full of dead undercoat or matts means that the skin cannot properly slough and shed leading to scaly build up and/or dandruff.

Talk to your professional groomer about keeping your schedule year round. Even in the winter months!
