Rare Breeds Ranch is located near the small Northern California town of Cottonwood. Our 110 acres is nestled in the foothills of the Coastal Range on the west side of the northern Sacramento Valley. The ranch has spectacular views of the Cascade Range, including Mount Lassen and Mount Shasta, the Siskiyou Range, the Trinity Alps and the Coastal Range. The spring and fall are mild, but summer tempe
ratures can reach 118 degrees. In the winter, we rarely get snow, because the ranch elevation is below 1,000', however, hard freezes are a regular occurrence. Our interest in "rare breeds" began with the beautiful Peruvian Paso horse, which we started to breed in the early 1990s. The next additions to our ranch were English Shire horses, the tallest of the draft breeds. The remoteness of the ranch in combination with the addition of a production flock of Suffolk sheep and Huacaya alpacas, led us to the only dog that could meet all of our guardian needs: the Anatolian Shepherd Dog. We were fortunate enough to be able to establish our breeding program with bloodlines from Gerlach Ranch Anatolians and Carpe Diem Anatolians. More recently, we have strengthened our breeding program by incorporating bloodlines from Birinci Anatolians. Life is good ... animals make it better.
