It's 85 degrees outside. People like to leave their dogs in the car while they run into the store for just a "minute". If we get to your car before you come back out, the ticket is $260. We have a city ordinance that states:

"Further, it shall be unlawful to:
(3)Leave an animal enclosed within a vehicle, or the bed of a parked truck, in ambient temperature which exceeds 79 degrees Fahrenheit unless said animal is enclosed inside the vehicle with the air conditioning turned on." under Sec 6-9.

Please leave your pets at home. The inside of a car heats up very quickly.

If you witness this happening Monday through Friday, 8am-5pm, call 405-372-0334.

If it is after hours or the weekend, call 405-372-4171 immediately.

Mississippi temps continue to rise. Remember, pets can overheat and die within minutes when left in a car. If you love them, leave them at home.

SO JUST HOW LONG DO YOUR PET’S SHOTS LAST?

Definitely longer than a year!

According to the top pet immunologist (aka vaccine expert) in the world, Dr. Ronald Schultz, Ph.D. – “ Annual revaccination provides no benefit and may increase the risk for adverse reactions.”

What the heck are adverse reactions (or side effects)?

Well according to the other rock star pet immunologist Dr. Jean Dodds:

“Side effects from dog vaccinations can occur anywhere from instantly up to several weeks or months later. Vaccines can even cause susceptibility to chronic diseases that appear much later in a dog’s life (Dodd, 2001).

Severe and fatal adverse reactions include:

•Susceptibility to infections.

•Neurological disorders and encephalitis.

•Aberrant behavior, including unprovoked aggression.

•Vaccines are linked to seizures. Distemper, parvovirus, rabies and, presumably, other vaccines have been linked with poly neuropathy, a nerve disease that involves inflammation of several nerves. (Dodds,2001)”

SO HOW LONG EXACTLY DOES YOUR PET’S VACCINE LAST?

According to the recommendations of the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA), (basically the dudes who set the standards for the vets): “Among healthy dogs, all commercially available [core] vaccines are expected to induce a sustained protective immune response lasting at least 5 yr. thereafter”

Here’s the breakdown of the core vaccines from Dr. Ronald Schultz:

Minimum Duration of Immunity for Canine Vaccines:

Distemper- 7 years by challenge
Parvovirus – 7 years by challenge
Adenovirus – 7 years by challenge
Canine rabies – 3 years by challenge

The moral of the story here, if you have no idea when your pet is due or has been vaccinated, then just run a titer test and this will confirm if you are due, rather than over-vaccinate your poor pet, setting the stage for future problems!

What’s a titer test?

A titer test (pronounced tight-errr) is a laboratory or in-house veterinary test measuring the existence and level of antibodies (necessary to fight off disease) in your pet’s blood. Basically, it’s a test that will tell you whether or not you actually need to vaccinate your pet.

It’s also super useful when making a decision about vaccinating a pet with an unknown vaccination history, or for determining if pets have received immunity from vaccination.

Vaccinating your pet is super important so don’t lose the overall message here: VACCINATE, JUST DON’T OVER-VACCINATE!

According to Dr. Dodds:

“Vaccines have achieved many important benefits for companion animals, and has saved more animals' lives than any other medical advance.”

Adopted Dec. 4!

Cindy the chinchilla, given up to Anne Arundel County Animal Care & Control because her family was moving, is reportedly 15 years old. 15! Chinchillas who are well cared for, as Cindy apparently has been, can live to about 20 (according to Guiness World Records, the oldest chinchilla ever recorded was Radar, who was 29 years and 229 days old when he died in California in 2014).

There's a lot of information online about the correct care of these soft little rodents (who are not recommended for families with young children). But one of the most interesting sites about them is animals.sandiegozoo.org/animals/chinchilla, which says it's thought that nearly every pet chinchilla in the USA today is a direct descendant of 11 chinchillas imported from Chile in the 1920s.

We'd love to see Cindy go home with an experienced owner for her sunset years. Would you please share this post to help Cindy find her new someone? Like all "critters" at the shelter other than dogs or cats, Cindy has no adoption fee.

Grapes, raisins, sultanas, currants, and any product containing them should be kept out of your pet’s reach at all times. If your pet accidentally eats these fruits, do not wait for symptoms to appear, act immediately.

The Anne Arundel County Council tonight unanimously voted to close loopholes in a 2018 anti-tethering law that was designed to prohibit the inhumane and dangerous practice of chaining dogs up outside unattended for long periods of time.

The 2018 law stipulated that a dog only can be tethered if it is "supervised" while it eliminates or exercises or its owner completes a "temporary task." County officials recommended that be changed to require direct supervision by an adult who is outside with the dog so owners could not claim they were constantly watching the dog from an indoor location or on a camera, which is difficult to disprove. The council agreed, but changed the minimum age of the person watching the dog to 13, with councilmembers saying that young teens, who are considered old enough to babysit, should be able to safely supervise a dog outside. During earlier council sessions, some councilmembers also had expressed concern that a person watching a dog could be cited for going inside briefly to take a call or use a bathroom, so the bill had been amended to allow a dog tied up outside to be unsupervised for one 15-minute period per day.

During previous debate on the bill, Anne Arundel County Animal Care & Control Administrator Robin Catlett had assured the councilmembers that the intent of the anti-tethering law is to prevent dogs from spending lonely lives suffering outside on chains -- not to punish an owner who briefly leaves a tethered dog unattended. Animal Care & Control usually has only one to three officers covering the entire 588-square-mile county. They do not have time to randomly search for tethered dogs, she said; they only respond to public complaints, and if found to be valid they usually first inform owners about the laws and only issue citations after repeated violations.

The legislation also clarified that AACACC can impound – take -- a dog that is kept outdoors without food, water or veterinary care, or with inadequate space or shelter, or if the animal is improperly tethered.

Earlier this year, Animal Care & Control officers, responding to neighbors’ complaints, went to a home 25 times over three months before they could remove a dog that each time they arrived was chained up outside. They issued 27 citations to the dog's owner for charges including failure to provide veterinary care, inadequate shelter/shade, lack of water and/or contaminate-free water, failure to vaccinate/license the dog and violations of the anti-tethering law, including chaining the dog outside when the temperature exceeded 89 degrees. But based on the county attorneys' advice, they did not take the dog (and a second chained dog who appeared at the home near the end of their investigation) until a judge signed a search and seizure warrant after seeing the mound of evidence collected by officers. The owner is appealing the citations and the removal of the dogs.

(Note: The flyer below reflects what the law's requirements will be once the revisions go into effect 45 days after the bill is signed by County Executive Steuart Pittman, whose administration proposed the legislation.)

A recent peer-reviewed paper found owners reported flea & tick products🦟 containing the potent pesticide, Isoxazoline💦, cause a reaction in 2 OUT OF 3 DOGS!

Reactions include seizures, behavioural issues, muscular/balance issues, and even death.

The pesticide can be found in products like: NEXGARD, NEXGARD SPECTRA, BRAVECTO, SIMPARICA, CREDELIO, REVOLUTION PLUS, and others.

This pesticide is so powerfully potent🔥 that it starts killing within two hours after administration! In fact, it kills 98.7% of newly arriving fleas within 24 hours! Because of this, Isoxazoline drugs now carry a warning⚠️ on their labels in both the U.S. and Canada. Even the FDA-U.S. Food and Drug Administration has issued a warning statement for veterinarians and pet parents.

It’s thats time of year. Don't be a fawnnapper! It's very common for moms to leave babies for the day while they forage. It's their hope that if they leave it near humans that it will help keep predators away. Doe will often hide fawns near your home or even right outside your home. This does not mean the baby is orphaned. Please contact a licensed Rehabilitator before moving a fawn. Unless they are crying, running around looking for the mom or showing signs of dehydration( curled ears) or hunger, they should be left alone.❤️
