Do you have dairy goats for milk? Are you working with long lactations? Do you actually want to use your milk to feed your family.
Everybody likes to say "great milking lines" but they don't really milk or do anything with the milk. Great genetics on paper only.
So, what does that even mean?
If you're looking to add real milking bloodlines to your herd, consider selecting from herds that milk over a full lactation season and showcase what can be done with milk.
In our herd, we are looking for milk consistency and heartiness in all types of weather. And we are milking from spring to winter, usually 9-10 months. Our herd is still going strong in 100 degrees and it will still go strong in freezing temps.
Our management practices include lots of morning turnout with shade, browse/ pasture, good quality feed on the milk stand and lots of fresh water.
Maple 2*M this morning and still milking over 4 pounds, a half gallon+ a day.
