Our chickens get a variety of fruits and vegetables in addition to a grain ration. Of course, they eat lots of bugs and grasses in the spring, summer and fall.

Tuesday Morning Farm report
Last week was lots of snow ice power outages. This week we chop more wood for the stove, start fixing fences that were broken from trees falling during the ice storm. We will start garden planning and get some allium and cole crop seeds started. We will be deciding what seeds we need to get ordered and try some new things. We anticipate 3 of our goat does will be kidding in a couple of months. We are also taking time to clean, organize and do little indoor projects.
Yesterday, Blue got her hooves trimmed and we trimmed 2 bucks. Its still too icy to work the horses so we just hung out with them.
Nicole started teaching a new Monday yoga class and is excited to get back to sharing her love of yoga with our community. She is planning a March renewal workshop including herbology for Spring liver health in March. Hope y'all have a great day. Tell us what you're up to!
Hope y'all have a fabulous Monday and a wonderful week!

This is why we are detailed about trimming 🐎 hooves including 🐸 frogs. This small piece of the heel could have caused a huge problem. What can you tell from this little piece of frog? See the little pin hole? Doesn't look like much but taking this little sliver can make a huge difference and improvement in movement and comfort. This is a sliver of Bluemoon's frog 🌙

Someone started putting toilets 🚽 🚽🚽 on the corner of my mom's road during the shutdown. There were several at once lined up and someone decorated them for holidays. One had a 🎃, one had a wreath 🎄.
It was hilarious, someone even named the location "toilet field" on Google. Most all of the community gets a good smile and laugh from it. Of course, the party 💩 poopers took them down. One reappeared last week during the snowstorm. The community was filled with joy. Even if it's silly and ridiculous, we hope this might make you smile too.

Judge your progress on your own terms.
Sometimes I feel like I'm going to be practicing/ stuck on this Etude (skill) for the rest of my life. I think I've been practicing it for almost 2 months now. It took me a long time to get past the first few lines. This piece introduces shifting to more positions more often than I am used to. I am simultaneously practicing another piece that introduces more positions more often and starting 3 octave scales that also go to more and even higher positions "on the stratosphere" than I have ever played before. All of which I feel like I will be playing and perfecting for the rest of my life. And honestly I probably will.
I used to wonder and ask questions like how long does it take other people to learn this stuff. To try and compare myself to see if I measured up, was going faster or slower, better or suckier ..haha. Now I don't care. It will take however long it takes and it is unimportant and makes absolutely zero difference how long or how good anyone else is. I play for myself. I learn the instrument for myself. For the challenge, for the sound, for the vibration, the fun and the joy of it! 🎻
That's why we farm too. For the joy of it. And cause we are crazy. ❤

We have been following the heirloom collard project for years. As y'all know, we are passionate and excited about growing heirloom varieties. The history behind food and feed saving is so fascinating. Thank you Ira Wallace for being such an inspiration to farmers 🌱

Did you know grocery store eggs can be 60 days old and still on the shelf? Hens are caged so they can't adjust or move around much. A living hell. In line factories produce 85% of US eggs. In line factories house between 50,000-350,000 in each house. The average consumer has no idea how the food is raised and handled. The hens get 67 square inches. That is less than half a foot!
We don't want to eat animals or products from miserable animals raised that way. We strive to raise happy animals that are well cared fir with plenty of room.
Our chicken flock is raised with free choice outside access to pasture except they do go in the coop at night. They receive a wide array of foods and are an important part of our ecosystem.
Our passion is pulling back the curtain and letting the truth see the sunlight . We have been horrified by what is behind it but all the animals deserve for the general public to see it. We can't make good choices in ignorance. People deserve to know what kind of energy they are eating.

We are very serious about making grilled cheese around here. Billy is a master grilled 🧀 chef! The butter has to be perfectly spread on the outside for the 🍳 skillet. As you can see the chef is warming it up to the appropriate specs.

Someone asked us when/ how we determine if our horses need a blanket or not. Our horses are in excellent body condition and managed in specific ways. We allow a free choice lifestyle of stalls or pasture leaving access to both 24/7. (Every once in awhile if it is raining a lot and extremely muddy in the pasture we will keep them in the dry lot and stall area for a day or two.) We also feed hay free choice 24/7. Plus clean water salt and some feed at night. Soaked beep and a little pellets and oats. Our ottb gets a fat ration.
Our horses are not clipped. We do not blanket unless it gets below 20 or 15° with conditions like heavy rain ice super windy, etc. We try not to leave blankets on over 24/48 hours without a break because we like their coats to breathe, get sunshine and leaving a blanket on too long can cause skin issues. So sometimes we will take it off during the day and then put it back on at night.
We do use waterproof blankets. It's really been accumulating snow and ice here and I think it makes them more comfortable and use less energy) having the blankets on when it's extremely cold. They are regularly brushed and the blankets are laundered. And yes I use our warshing machine but don't tell my husband! 😆

Did y'all know these muck boots weigh 2.5 lbs. each? You wouldn't think that would be a big deal. But, add in walking in the snow and pushing wheelbarrow while cleaning stalls and your legs, back and body will feel it. Lots of stretches today. At least the boots have the vegetable pattern so I can look forward to gardening.
And with what we do there are NO DAYS OFF!!! Happy Friday y'all.

Good morning everyone. It's around 5° here in our holler. But our hearts ❤ are warm because so many friends and family have been checking on us. It really is a wonderful feeling of security to know we have so many people that have our backs. When we posted about the water heater, within 15 minutes we had Bardstown Plumbing on the way. When our power and generator went out, within 15 minutes, our brother in law was on his way to let us borrow his. We just want to say thank you! Community and Support systems are so important. Hope everyone has a great day and bundle up. More snow on the way. ☃

You need protein. Women are more prone to bone loss and osteoporosis than men, especially in peri-menopause. Women are also at higher lifetime risk for bone fractures.
People also start to lose muscle mass as they age, so I have been maintaining and building mine up which preserves strength, physical function and balance.
My cholesterol and triglycerides are at perfect levels. I eat high protein full fat mostly raw dairy on a daily basis (our 🐐 girls are up to 7.5% fat), farm fresh eggs and a variety of meats. Plus a wide array of fruits and vegetables. I also work out lifting heavy weights, kettlebells and practice yoga to keep my body strong. Then, work on the farm cross training, gardening and riding horses. 🐎 We walk a lot.
Here are a few high protein meals to give Examples.
Tell us what you do to stay healthy and strong! What kind of protein do you like? What kind of exercises do you like to do?
