First timer , Whisky , wasted NO time diving into the fun here at Bun- Voyage : Rabbit Sanctuary , Resort & Salon!!
I wish we had a more conclusive update on our special needs bun rescued by Willys Wabbits 2.0, “Fritz”. His condition (malformed front legs, likely genetic ) has stumped 2 vets , both agree however -that surgery is out of the question . Fritz is a relatively high maintenance Bunny . He has trouble cleaning his bottom since he cannot balance on his front legs . He also struggles to get around , groom himself , and even drinking out of certain bowls poses a problem. Luckily he and I have a little morning clean-up routine worked out which he enjoys . He takes 4 different supplements a day to maintain his joint and digestive health . He is on a strict limited pellet diet since gaining weight will worsen his condition . It’s clear that his legs are certainly not getting any better, maybe his condition will remain stable for years - BUT , our fear is that as he grows up his legs will splay more as his ligaments and tendons stretch/weaken , making it impossible for him to live a happy life . Only time will tell.
So this leaves Tammie and I in a quandary. Do we keep him as a sanctuary bunny , and let him live out his life under extremely careful supervision and expert care at Bun- Voyage : Rabbit Sanctuary , Resort & Salon……Or …do we allow him to be adopted out to a rabbit savvy family where he will get more space and undivided attention , and pray it goes well? The obvious con of keeping him here is that he takes up a foster spot that is very much needed in the rescue world (no he isn’t able to be bonded with any of my current residents at the moment ).
We vowed to do right by this special dude , and are just trying to figure out what that is. For now , I’m soaking up his love and making sure he knows how special he is . Stay tuned …
