Tis the Season for Winter Paw Care...

Caring for your dog's paws during snowy, icy, and salty conditions is essential to keep them safe and comfortable. Here are some tips:

1. Protection
Booties: Dog boots are the best option for protection against cold, ice, and salt. Make sure they fit snugly and have good traction.

Paw Balm or Wax: Apply a paw balm like Musher’s Secret before walks. This creates a barrier against salt and prevents paws from drying out.

2. Pre-Walk Preparation
Trim Paw Hair: Keep the fur between your dog's paw pads trimmed to prevent ice balls from forming.
Inspect Paw Pads: Check for cracks or injuries before heading out.

3. During Walks
Avoid Salted Areas: Try to walk on snow or grass instead of salted sidewalks when possible.

Short Walks: Limit the time spent outside in extreme cold to reduce exposure.

4. After Walks
Rinse and Dry: Wash your dog’s paws with warm water after walks to remove salt, ice, and de-icers, which can be toxic.

Check for Injuries: Look for redness, cracks, or lodged debris like ice or gravel.

Moisturize: Apply a paw moisturizer or balm if their pads seem dry.

5. Additional Tips
Hydration: Keep your dog well-hydrated, as healthy paw pads are less likely to crack.

Pet-Friendly De-icer: If you have a yard or driveway, use pet-safe salt alternatives.

For your active, intelligent dogs, boots or balm will be especially important since they may enjoy energetic play in the snow!

Keeping both dogs and trick-or-treaters safe during Halloween is important. Here are some tips for each:

For Dogs:
Keep Dogs Indoors: With frequent doorbell ringing and strangers, it's best to keep your dog inside to reduce anxiety and prevent escapes.

Create a Safe Space: Set up a comfortable area with toys and treats where your dog can relax away from the noise and commotion.

Avoid Costumes: If your dog isn’t used to wearing costumes, it’s best to skip them to avoid stress. If you do dress them up, ensure the costume fits well and doesn’t restrict movement or vision.

Be Cautious with Treats: Keep candy, especially chocolate and xylitol (found in sugar-free products), out of reach, as they can be toxic to dogs.

Use a Leash: If you’re taking your dog for a walk, keep them on a leash to prevent them from bolting at unexpected noises.

For Trick-or-Treaters:
Keep Dogs Leashed: If your dog is outside, always have them on a leash to prevent them from jumping on or scaring children.

Inform Your Neighbors: If your dog is reactive or anxious, let your neighbors know in advance so they can be cautious when visiting.

Block Access to Treats: Store candy and other decorations safely out of reach to avoid curious dogs getting into trouble.

Provide Clear Pathways: Make sure your yard is well-lit and free of obstacles to prevent tripping hazards for children.

Educate Children: Remind trick-or-treaters to approach dogs calmly and to ask permission before petting them.

By taking these precautions, you can ensure a safe and fun Halloween for both your pets and the neighborhood kids!

🎃🐾 Halloween Candy Safety for Dogs! 🐾🎃

Hey, friends! As Halloween approaches, let’s keep our furry friends safe and sound! Here are some important reminders about Halloween candy and dogs:

🍬 Avoid Chocolate: All types of chocolate can be toxic to dogs. Even small amounts can cause serious health issues.

🍭 Beware of Sugar-Free Treats: Many sugar-free candies contain xylitol, which is extremely toxic to dogs and can lead to rapid insulin release and liver failure.

🍬 Keep Candy Out of Reach: Make sure to store all candy in places where your pup can't get to it. Halloween excitement can lead to curious noses!

👻 Watch for Wrappers: Even if they don’t eat the candy, wrappers can pose a choking hazard or cause intestinal blockages.

💚 Offer Dog-Safe Treats: Consider giving your dog some special treats made just for them!

Let’s keep our pets happy and healthy this Halloween! 🐶💖 Share your own tips in the comments!

Mental stimulation: Hiking provides mental stimulation for your dog, and can help them explore new places.

Weight management: Hiking can help you and your dog maintain a healthy weight.
Bonding: Hiking is a great way to bond with your dog and create lasting memories.
Stress reduction: Hiking can help reduce stress and anxiety for both you and your dog.

Socialization: Hiking allows your dog to see other dogs, people, and animals, which can help them get used to different activities.
Improved behavior: Hiking can help burn off excess energy for your dog.
Cardiovascular health: Hiking can help improve cardiovascular health for both you and your dog.
Muscle building: Hiking can help your dog build muscle.
Before hiking with your dog, you should make sure they are healthy enough for the activity. A long-distance trek is different from a daily walk, so you should prepare accordingly.

Today's National Day is one of our favorites! FUR-REAL!

It's National Dog Day!!

Our best friends, our protectors, and sometimes our favorite family members!

"National Dog Day celebrates all dogs, mixed breed and pure. Our mission is to help galvanize the public to recognize the number of dogs that need to be rescued each year and acknowledges family dogs and dogs that work selflessly each day to save lives, keep us safe and bring comfort. Dogs put their lives on the line every day...for personal protection, for law enforcement, for the disabled, for our freedom and safety by detecting bombs and drugs and pulling victims of tragedy from wreckage, now they're detecting cancer and seizures...things even humans cannot do."

We have lots of Chamber Members who can offer benefits for your puppers.

- Treat them to a pup cup at Three Bean Coffee House & Spots Rolling Bean Coffee Co.
- Get their groom on at Galion Shampooch & Villas, Bucyrus Veterinary Services, Susan's Doggy Spa
- Boarding services at Horizon Animal Hospital, Bucyrus Veterinary Services, Galion Shampooch & Villas
- Adopt your new best friend at Humane Society Serving Crawford County
- Donate to Rescued Rollers
- At times, they need some training and Calm Dog Project can help with that.
- Pick up some bandanas and gear Ole Dog's Coffee Culture.
- Don't forget to get their food Liberty Farm, Home & Garden
- Check out Crawford County Art Center for doggy inspired artwork or have portraits taken by Indigo Fields Creative

A huge thank you to Doug Greene and his service dog, Snoopy for being members of the Chamber.
