Check out this brilliant looking Dusky Pygmy Rattlesnake that was hanging out among some saw palmettos beside someone's walkway. These little guys are beautiful and although venomous, their bites are fairly rare. With that being said they should be respected and left alone, and small children and pets should not be able to get anywhere near them.
The Dusky Pigmy Rattlesnake has a reputation for protecting itself. Its bite, while usually not life threatening, can be painful and result in the loss of a digit. Some rare cases have been fatal. It feeds primarily on frogs and mice. The rattle sounds like an insect buzzing.
They are commonly found in lowland pine flatwoods, prairies, around lakes and ponds, and along the borders of many freshwater marshes and cypress swamps.
