Goodbye Bella. You were the best dog for your people and they were the best people for you. You were so loved, I’m sorry I made you hangry sometimes before coming to see me. I loved you so much….Just know that you were so special, tears are being shed for you tonight on the other side of the globe. I won’t forget a single minute I had the privilege of helping care for you. Thank you for making it easier on your mom….And we’ll look after her and your sister for you, I promise ❤️❤️

Today, I helped King move on to his next assignment with the peace, dignity and tribute that he deserved. He was surrounded by love and given the respect that he was due for his unwavering service. Police dogs ARE officers of the law. They too, give their lives for their duty and are no less important than their human counterparts. We need to never forget that. There is nothing we could have done that would have held him in high enough esteem. I hope that his fellow officers, family members and community find some small comfort in having honored him. I know I was honored (and heartbroken) to have been a part of his life and his death. I would like to believe that he knew we were all there for him, to love him and thank him. To see the law enforcement community come together for this beautiful, brave, strong dog is something I will never forget. I have worked with police dogs in three different states, and never have I seen as many officers come together as I did today and the emotion of it has been indelibly impressed in my heart and memory. Thank you to his family, to his unit, to my staff, and to everyone who was part of this day. I can only wish that we are as deserving of his love as he was of ours and that we never, ever, ever, forget K9 King.
Knowing he had performed his duty as a canine officer, protecting me from harm, I had to perform my duty as a veterinarian and protect him from suffering. As we entered into King’s final moments, I gripped the dog tag around my neck that is from another police dog who was incredibly dear to me, and I asked him to come es**rt King to his new unit. I know that he heard me, and I know that King did not move on alone. I promise you Ray, that King has a good partner in the next place while he waits for you.

As of 2021 there are now 183,000,000 pets (dogs and cats) owned in the US. In 2018 there were 135,000,000.

Our country added FOURTY EIGHT MILLION patients to our profession in 3 years.

In 2018 there were 113,394 veterinarians.

In 2021 there ARE 118,624 plus our dedicated techs and assistants who are floundering under this burden.

Our profession has added 5,320 doctors. That is ONE doctor for every 1550 animals.

Let me say that again: that is ONE DVM PER 1550 patients.

YOU DO THE MATH. If you’re frustrated you cannot get in with your pet, if you’re mad about wait times at ANY vet’s office, if you’re feeling your pet is not getting the attention it deserves, it’s not. Because we can’t. WE CANNOT. Our profession CANNOT statistically support this rate of expansion at this time, in this country. PERIOD.

We are trying. We are drowning. This is inhuman and our profession is imploding. Think about it, human hospitals are not able to handle the sheer magnitude of the sick human population during COVID. And WE (veterinary medicine) are not able to handle how may pets were adopted (or more often) PURCHASED during the COVID pandemic.

This will not go away. These pets will live normal long lives (most of them) and so our profession will not be out of this for over a decade. If you think this “crazy wait time” will subside with the country wide pandemic, think again. There are only so many vet schools. Only so many new veterinary doctors. And endless patients out there…

Please THINK about that before you berate us. Yell at us. Get frustrated with us. Tell us we don’t care about your pet. Please think about that before you decide now is a good time to buy a dog or a cat.

Please think about that when that exhausted veterinary nurse comes to bring your pet inside and you have to wait hours to talk to the doctor. One doctor for every 1550 patients. This is a cry for help and compassion. From the trenches.

Want to help? Be kind. Be patient. Be understanding.

Help us. ❤️
