What can be a reward?

Anything your dog truly wants in the moment! If you know what your dog wants in any given moment you can train at any time. It can be a chance to say to a friend, to run zoomies, to play, to be left alone (yes some dogs don’t want to always be interacted with), food, treats, a toss of a toy.
This list can go on forever, so what is your dogs FAVORITE reward?

Nervous dogs like space!

The more you try to win them over they longer they will take to trust. Stop trying to touch and feed from your hand. Instead, try throwing food away from you, keep your body directed as away as safely as possible, dont try to touch when they approach.

All of things make a differnce help them see you're trustworthy, non threatening. Allow them to work on their time.

Impulse Control

I’m sure you hear it all time when people talking about training their dogs. At 6 months old thanks to lots of play, and learning obedience cues, like place. What not you don’t see here is the people moving around the noises as he’s in a public setting, the sandwich at eye level within a few feet.

Train and play with your pups, it will pay off.

What’s going on here?

Impulse control. Practicing an obedience cue like place, with a high value item (in this case a tug). Can help prepare your dog to resist tempting things in the real world.
What’s not pictured is the way this cue is also practiced in between play sessions. So this guy in particular was asked to go from crazy play to wait patiently and resist the item of value both stationary and in motion.

Building Confidence, training, impulse control, and focus.
This was all being worked with Ms. Phoebe, but what was best about this was it was FUN!
When we started this game it looked more like a game of keep away, until it became the cooperative yet competitive game of tug!

He’s working on getting comfortable while being crated. He loves using play and food to train. And lucky for him we used both in out last session.

Look at this tired little puppy!

His name is Rooster! He is working on containing his puppy mouth. Today’s session we were working on giving him an outlet for his need to use his mouth, while also teaching him how to think while in a high arousal state of mind.

I have a feeling he slept well after our session 🙂

This is Opie!

When we first met he was sacred of me, didn’t want any contact at all. His mom has been working hard on confidence building exercises, and some basic obedience. He now can not just coexist but play with me. He is going to be building from what he now know into real life to help him cope overall.

Training your dog can be lots of fun. In order to have the most fun and impactful training, It is important to start with simple skills and play. Trying to solve a “problem” in training can take time and hard work that requires the fundamentals. Just like learning algebra, we have to start at the bottom with 1= 🍎, to 1+1=2, through multiplication and division(and all else in between), before we can get 5x+2=17 and be able to solve for x.

It is our job as owners/ pet parents, to make sure we can communicate with our dogs so they can understand us and we can learn to understand them. If we can not effectively communicate with our dogs how can we navigate more complex situations? It would be like attempting calculus without knowing basic math, algebra and all else in between.

Starting from the bottom up will always make big challenges more attainable. It may take time, but learning with your dog can be fun!
