Ranitomeya sirensis 'Highland' tadpole
Happy Father's Day!
Treating a wound.
This poor guy got an abrasion during shipping. Unfortunately this happens sometimes, but it can be treated. Silver sulfadiazine (SS) is the best ointment for this, but you can also use Neosporin. You'll have go to a vet to get SS.
For the next few weeks I'll keep him in quarantine so I can observe him and continue to treat him daily.
Other than the wound, he looks very healthy, and I expect he'll heal up just fine.
FYI, these frogs have been living together for 2.5 years and were just upgraded to a new 75 gallon tank. So they're just excited. Harmless wrestling between Terribilis sometimes is normal. If one frog becomes submissive or outcompeted for food then it would be a problem. I'll keep an eye on them to make sure they're all ok, and separate if they're not ok.
Caveat: This does not mean that wrestling is normal and harmless for all dart frog species. With many species, this behavior would be alarming.
Update: So far so good, as expected, on day 2 in their new tank. Lots of calling, but no wrestling.
Update 2: Day 3. Still no more wrestling, lots of calling. Looks like we're probably in the clear, but I'll continue to watch. I wasn't ever worried, but I know a few people were. I hope this has helped enlighten people about Terribilis.
Phylobates Terribilis Mint calling.
