Did you know that regular exercise can strengthen your senior dog's body, improve their wellbeing and at the same time help with cognition and memory?! 😲🥳

The right kind of exercises can literally slow age related muscle wasting, cognitive decline and more! But there are changes in your dog's body that shouldn't be over looked when designing a senior or geriatric dog exercise program. You shouldn't simply do the same as you did when Fido was 5.

Cardiovascular exercises combined with low load strengthening, flexibility, and motor control can go a long way to keep your best friend moving well and live an even better life! 🐾

Want to make sure you don't miss this opportunity to help your dog?

Food for Your Dog’s Skin Health 🐕

If your dog suffers with itchy skin or other skin conditions, a change in their skin microbiome may be contributing to the problem. Several skin diseases are associated with alterations in the microbiome, including your pet’s skin microbiome, and using a novel nutritional approach (switching from highly processed to unprocessed food) to improve their microflora may help relieve skin conditions or their symptoms. 👍🐶

Discover more about the findings of the study when you read today’s free pet health article on the bark & whiskers website.

Plain yogurt is a source of probiotics. Go ahead and add a dollop onto your pet’s meals for a healthier gut! 👌🐶🐱

Join me in welcoming Sparky to the !

Sparky underwent a left femoral head ostectomy 7.5 weeks ago as it was previously broken several years ago but not treated properly 😢. It’s ok though because his wonderful foster mom is taking such good care of him as he recovers. This sweetie loves kisses, nibbles, treats and all the attention! 💗

We’re going to work on getting him to use his left leg more, increase his muscle mass and get his gait looking normal. It will be a lot of hard work, but Sparky and mom are up for it! Go Sparky!! 🎉

Let’s welcome 3 (almost 4) year old Charlie to the Just Dogs Pack!

Charlie is a very sweet and playful Boxer/American Staffordshire who slipped last winter and is still limping when he plays and zoomies. His pawrents want him to be able to get back to his goofy antics without pain.

We look forward to helping him get stronger and feel better so he can run and jump as much as he wants!

Welcome, Charlie!

What you choose to put in your puppy’s bowl 🥄at an early stage can literally affect their whole life, not to mention your bank account💳 with future vet bills if you decide to add nothing to their food!

“I only feed my dog their kibble, I NEVER give them anything else!” was once a proud pet owner statement, but microbiome🦠 research proves this is a BIG mistake. Study after study shows the more diverse your pet’s bowl is, the healthier their gut and immune system can become.

A brand new study from Finnish Veterinary Scientists shows healthy human food🍗🥦 leftovers offered to puppies significantly reduces allergy symptoms and skin problems later in life. This long-term, protective effect increased the more often real foods were added, so the more exposure puppies had to a variety of healthy leftovers, the more protection there was from developing skin issues down the road.

“…even if the dog🐶 eats 80% of its food as dry, adding a minimum of 20% of the food as raw significantly decreased the risk of AASS [allergic skin disease] later in life.” – Dr. Anna Hielm-Björkman

According to the scientists, feeding a variety raw or minimally processed, real food early in life may lead to microbial exposure that enhances the immune system early on, reducing allergic responses later in life. Some of the foods owners fed in this study were fish🐟 and meats🥩, vegetables🍆 and roots🍠, culinary mushrooms🍄, buttermilk and other fermented milk products🥛 and berries🫐.

In our new book, The Forever Dog, we list over 40 of our favorite fresh foods from the fridge to add to your dog’s bowl, backed by the most surprising new science as to why they’re so amazing at building health and longevity! We also show you how to add them in a way that keeps your pup’s nutrition in balance. You’ll want to check out the section called: “Core Longevity Toppers: Superfoods You Can Share with Your Dog on a Daily Basis.” We’ve also included handy charts on which foods are best at building your dog’s microbiome, powerful polyphenol-rich foods, as well as a long list of fast-n-fresh training treats, if you’re on the go. ARE LAUNDRY CHEMICALS AFFECTING YOUR PETS’ SKIN & HEALTH?

If you wash your pet blankets and beds using popular fabric softeners and dryer sheets, that “just washed” fresh smell comes from chemicals called Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) that can negatively impact your pets’ health (coughing, rashy, itchy pets, anyone?).

Dr. Anne Steinmann’s UW-Seattle research team found more than 25 VOCs emitted from dryer vents using these products, including well-known respiratory irritants like Acetone, Formaldehyde, Acetaldehyde, but also Pentane (which causes skin rashes and upset stomach), Ethyl Acetate (on the EPA’s Hazardous Waste list; causes anemia, changes in white blood cells and can damage the liver and kidneys), Benzyl Acetate (can be absorbed through the skin and is linked to pancreas problems) and Alpha-terpineol (causes headaches and nervous system disorders).

Our pets can do without having to breathe in these chemical residues or having to lay on them, so here’s our Forever Dog Tip of the day: replace chemical-laden fabric softeners with a non-toxic DIY option!

Recipe: Mix 6 cups white vinegar with 1 cup baking soda, let it fizz. When the fizz stops, pour mixture into a large glass container with a lid. Use 1 cup per load of laundry.

We highlight all of the of home chemical risks that can negatively impact your dog’s health in the The Forever Dog book, available now for pre-order by clicking here: https://foreverdog.com/about/ -window

A little about me: my name is Sarah and I just moved to the Cumberland, MD area in March. I have been a human physical therapist since 2018, but have been an animal lover my whole life. Below you’ll see our 4 year old, Earl and our 1.5 year old, Ellie.

At the end of 2020 I finished my certification through the Canine Rehabilitation Institute as a Certified Canine Rehabilitation Therapist (CCRT) and knew I had to put my passion into practice.

So when my boyfriend accepted a job offer here, I decided to start my dream! Now I’m here to offer your dogs comprehensive evaluation and treatment in order to assist your dogs in getting back to the things they love, whether they are declining from old age, injury, surgery, etc.

The best part is that I come to you! Earl has a lot of anxiety so I understand when dogs have difficulty going to the vet or riding in the car. When I come to your home to see your fur baby, we spend the first part of the session becoming comfortable so that it is a good experience for your dog. We only believe in fear free treatment at Just Dogs!

If you want to know anything else about me, my dogs or how I can help your dog, feel free to comment or message me. 🥰❤️

Here is Earl, enjoying the first go of the laser. He doesn’t have any musculoskeletal issues at the moment, but he does get tight back muscles from running around like a crazy dog and being sad when his humans aren’t home. I think he likes it, what do you think? 🥰

What is your dog motivated by? We usually use treats to help dogs achieve various positions for stretching and strengthening exercises, but sometimes treats aren’t motivating for dogs or are too motivating. So we need to find something else the dog likes, like a toy, or find something the dog likes less, like praise! 🧸 🍕

Flashback Friday! 📸

As I launch Just Dogs Rehab, I’ve been thinking about two very special furry friends that are no longer with us.

The first picture is of Onyx, my first dog as an adult. I adopted her from a rescue during my first year of grad school. She loved hiking, watching squirrels and being next to her human. We suspect she was around 11 years old when she passed away in January 2021.

The second picture shows Baron, a very special boy. My fiancé adopted him when he was just 7 weeks old and they were inseparable ever since. I came into the picture 9 years later and quickly became Baron’s number 2 human. He was the sweetest boy with a very unique and funny personality! We lost him also at 11 years old a year earlier in January 2020.

Have you lost a special senior (or any furbaby) that you will never forget? What was special about them? What do you still miss? I’d love to hear about it ❤️
