What an educational, fun weekend packed full of so much knowledge. As a trainer, I’m always striving to learn from others to better myself with my dogs and so I can help my clients have the best possible clarity, effective communication and relationship with their dogs. Pretty pumped and proud about the results from this weekend for our very first show at the UKC Southern Classic. Being in the ring is a totally different ballgame and experience compared to working with other’s dogs!! Big growth and challenge that I know will make me a better trainer. I haven’t been able to talk about it yet, but I felt my Eli with me as I saw a random photo on the wall of an Italian grouhound right before I went into the ring and knew I would be fine.

I’ve wanted to get involved in sports for a while now and the timing was never right, but an amazing opportunity landed in my lap for Jayden and I with Emily Stein with The Texas Haven and we couldn’t pass it up. Safe to say we are hooked!!! Experiencing this with my daughter (and having my other little and hubby Joshua Yateson the sidelines), getting to cheer for each other, encourage each other, become better handlers and a team with our dogs and seeing her so passionate about something has been amazing and rewarding. She’s worked so hard and her confidence has blossomed. If you know her, you know her personality will light up an entire room and I just love being around her.

Jayden took 1st in her pre jr class and I took 2nd with Gemma in Rally1 trial 2 group B, which gave her another qualifying score (she needs one more to title for rally1).

It’s been a great and exhausting weekend!

The holidays can be stressful. Tomorrow while you’re enjoying your thanksgiving foods and company remember that some of the things that happen on holidays can be tough for pets! Pay close attention to any food they may be given, make sure they have a quiet place to go if company is overwhelming, and once everyone is gone go ahead and take that trash out so Fido can’t get into it!

🛇 Use your Manners! 🛇
The Sniff test - Stop doing that!
The sniff test - a badly engrained habit that society has been taught, without a clear understanding of what they're actually doing.

🚩When you reach out towards a dog, you are using body pressure AT them, giving them no time to assess whether you are safe & whether they require further investigation to pick up your information. You are forcing an interaction of a relationship that hasn't had time to develop. To some dogs, this is quite rude & the reason a lot of dogs snap at or bite people. This can cause alot of behavioral issues because of layered stress due to forced interactions.

🚩If they are on lead, they have no where to go if they are sensitive to spacial pressure, so can end up shutting down, shying away or snapping at your hand so you back off. This is an example of how a dog is now using pressure to turn off pressure & make you back off so they aren't so stressed.

🚩People think by offering your hand it can give the dog time to sniff to know you're friendly... they can sniff without being forced to sniff your hand.Their noses are far more superior than ours & they don't need close contact forced upon them to smell you.

🚩Some dogs might not want to know you. You have no relationship with them and that's perfectly fine. They aren't your dog so you don't need to touch them or steal pats for your own satisfaction.

🤔 If you are meeting a dog, what should you do?
⚠Ask the owner if you can interact with their dog. Not all people want strangers touching their dogs. Especially strangers who you are unlikely to see again.
⚠Stand up straight & relaxed, with your hands at your side.
⚠Ignore the dog & talk to the owner.
⚠Don't stare at the dog & don't try to force an interaction by going in for a pat. If the dog wants to know you, it will come up to you & sniff around. Usually they will move away & then come back for a second sniffathon. Some dogs will bunt your hands & wag their tails, which are good signs that you're likely an accepted new friend. Give them a few slow pats down their back (NOT THEIR HEAD) & then stop. Is the dog happy? Has it accepted your interaction? This will determine whether you can give it more pats.

🐶This is a more stress free option for dogs & a reason why in consultations we can develop a good level of trust, especially with fearful dogs & aggressive dogs, without a bunch of negative side effects from forced interactions.

Yes, you should most definitely leash your dog!
Allowing your “friendly” dog to approach dogs who are on leash is an invasion of their space and very likely causing set backs in the training that dog and handler have been working incredibly hard on. Just because you think your dog is friendly does not mean you should assume anyone else’s dog is. And often times dogs who are “friendly” approach with body language that can be perceived as threatening by dogs who are fearful. This means your “friendly” dog can inadvertently start a fight and if you allowed your dog to invade the space of another, the fight is entirely your own fault, not the fault of the dog who reacted or the handler who owns the leashed dog. Part of being a responsible dog owner includes ensuring that your dog never infringes on the rights of others meaning if someone goes to jog the trail at a local park that has a leash law, they shouldn’t have to interact with an off leash dog chasing them while they do so.
If there is a leash law, leash your dog. If your dog doesn’t have a good recall, leash your dog. If your dog is not respecting the body language of others, leash your dog. If your dog is showing signs of stress, leash your dog.
It is so much better to leash your dog and avoid a possible accident than it is to just wait and see if it will be fine. If you aren’t absolutely sure in the situation, leash your dog.
