He and his handler did well.

Marshall had his first vet visit at Victory Bark Veterinary Clinic this morning. He was given a clean bill of health. I really believe he enjoyed most of his visit.

Saber Working Dogs always has health checks performed as part of the onboarding for the new dogs we provide.
I have known this staff for around 20 years and I personally recommend this clinic for our working dogs and pets as well.

Meet Marshall. He’s a German Short Haired Pointer. Marshall is a year and half old and starting his training for Elm Ridge Police Department, located in Denton County, Texas.

While all our working dogs are special to us, Marshall is named in honor of a personal friend Jackson County Sheriff’s Deputy Lena Marshall. Sadly, Deputy Lena Marshall was shot on November 5th, 2021 and succumbed to her injuries on November 8th, 2021.
Lena was a former K9 handler and many times commented how much she loved being a handler.

When I mentioned the desire to honor Lena to another close friend Robert Kreamer, he supported the idea and ran with the concept to made it happen.
Mr Kreamer organized the companies he is associated with. With donations from the following: Bare Naked Barbeque LLC, Snack Locker LLC and RC Security Consulting INC they they donated the funds to make it happen.

We would like to thank all of them for their support and donations to make this possible.

We are excited to see Marshall start his pre training phase, followed by handler school and then deployment on the street, serving the citizens of Elm Ridge!

First time to cross this river as a vendor picking up a dog (not as a handler).
Kinda cool to see this from the other side of things.

PD handlers, I keep hearing from handlers that are saying the same things over and over since my rant a few weeks ago and quite honestly, it is disturbing.
First, if you are doing a demo with a dog that is not squared away, stop it! You are making every K-9 unit out there look bad. Your ego is making bad judgments that will eventually end your unit’s support.
Know who your vendor is. If that “trainer” does not clearly understand the job your dog is being trained to do, you are going to fail on the streets. I don’t care if they have a badass social media page or can regurgitate what they have read or heard; you will probably fail when there’s a life on the line. It may be yours, your partners', or worst of all, a citizen. Is it worth the risk? Can you live with that for the rest of your life?Prepare for the day that everything has gone to hell in a handbasket. Train with that day in mind.
Do your research on your vendors. Who do you want to take the stand to testify about your training if you are called into court?
And finally, why are you deploying dogs that aren’t fully trained and certified? There are videos out on social media that show the failure to engage a suspect your dog had for everyone to see and laugh at.
I can say this: I have found a load of drugs, tracked a suspect, and engaged a suspect with a dog. I may be short and direct, but you will not be on the streets with a dog from Saber that’s not as ready as possible to do its job. When you find that load of drugs or engage that bad guy, I will talk you through writing your report to make sure all the correct information is detailed in that report. For the record, I will not cover up or help you hide a bad deployment.
Do better, young handlers. There are many of us out there who have spent the majority of our careers and dedicated those careers to actually working dogs. Seek out those that were productive, and are willing to pass on what we learned and even share our failures for you to learn from.
Stop this nonsense and be careful who you put your trust in, because there are plenty of posers to sift through.

I have to speak my mind about a trend I have seen. I have kept quiet and came to the realization that I couldn’t contain my opinions any longer.

As a handler since 2002 and trainer since 2017, I feel compelled to share my observations about the current state of the K9 industry. Saber Working Dogs specializes in training police dogs and personal protection dogs during recent handler schools, I have noticed a concerning trend. Some handlers seem to view their position as a mere stepping stone for promotion or a means to differentiate themselves, rather than prioritizing the welfare and effectiveness of their canine partners.

This approach is disappointing, as it undermines the fundamental principles of K9 handling. Experienced handlers and trainers have traditionally emphasized the importance of prioritizing the dog's needs and well-being above personal interests. This has been passed down through generations of handlers, who have learned from their mentors and, in turn, have shared their knowledge with others.

Unfortunately, the rise of social media has led to the proliferation of self-proclaimed "trainers" who prioritize entertainment value over substance. These individuals often have little practical experience in the disciplines they claim to specialize in, yet they have garnered a significant following. Their "training methods" are frequently based on catchy phrases or rebranded basic skills, rather than sound principles. The result is a cult-like following, where adherents blindly follow these "trainers" without honestly evaluating their methods.

In reality, effective K9 training requires an understanding of training theory, as well as the ability to adapt to the unique needs and characteristics of each individual dog. Experienced trainers recognize that there is no one-size-fits-all approach to training and are willing to evolve and refine their methods based on their experiences and the changing needs of their canine partners.

Sadly, the K9 industry has seen its share of charlatans and individuals who prioritize their own interests over the welfare of the dogs. Some of these individuals have even faced criminal charges due to their mistreatment of animals. It is essential that handlers and trainers exercise discernment when seeking guidance and mentorship, as the consequences of following ineffective or inhumane training methods can be severe.

Behind the scenes, there are many dedicated trainers who are committed to quietly honing their craft, learning from their successes and failures, and adapting to the evolving needs of their canine partners. These individuals prioritize the welfare and effectiveness of their dogs, rather than seeking to promote themselves or their methods.

Recently, I had the opportunity to speak with a handler who possesses a natural talent for working with dogs. Our conversation highlighted the importance of continuous learning and evolution in K9 training. Even though I have been retired from law enforcement for over three years, my approach to training has undergone significant changes. You have to change according to the dog. The days of the hard dogs are done and very few handlers can handle these dogs, so in turn breeders and vendors are adjusting.

The importance of prioritizing the welfare and effectiveness of police dogs cannot be overstated. Handlers and trainers must be vigilant in their pursuit of excellence, recognizing that the consequences of their actions can have far-reaching implications for the dogs, their handlers, and the communities they serve.

In conclusion, I urge handlers and trainers to exercise caution when seeking guidance and mentorship. It is essential to prioritize the welfare and effectiveness of police dogs, rather than following flashy or trendy training methods. By doing so, we can ensure that our canine partners receive the care, respect, and training they deserve, and that they are able to perform their critical roles safely and effectively.

Bottom line…Be cautious of who you follow and put your trust in.

End of rant.

If you know Riggs’s human, you know Riggs has been watching how she drives. With Riggs leaning forward, ears tucked back for lower wind resistance and one paw on the horn, he definitely drives like she does (not mentioning any names).

🎉Happy Birthday K9 Andor!

Handler and K9 just got back from their National Certification test at the Hill Country Training Center where they passed with flying colors! We are extremely proud of their teamwork to achieve this accomplishment.

Thank you Saber Working Dogs, LLC for your continual support of our K9 team.

National certification is required yearly to demonstrate the teams competency and ability to execute their skills at a required level for completion.

Congratulations K9 Andor and Deputy Merriman

Nice to see a clear headed dog. Not the norm for the breed.

This is an example why we train dogs that have never been defeated and are fearless.

It’s also why we train Law Enforcement handlers and personal protection dog owners to have an exceptionally strong bond with their dogs.

I don’t talk about it much and my previous department never considered it, because command staff only considered him as “just a dog” but I am confident that my retired K9 Cziko (aka “the retiree”), in all likelihood saved my life by his mere presence during a track for a man with a gun call. The suspect had a drop on me and had the gun pointed at me when I first saw him.

But that’s a story for another day..

K9 Rocky, part of the U.S. Marshal’s Special Operations Group, was shot multiple times in the neck during today’s takedown of Robert Davis, the man who killed Brazoria County Deputy Jesus Vargas. Rocky was flown to the vet in a DPS chopper & is expected to survive. His handler says he saved his life.

Today it seems everyone wants to blast a negative interaction with a company.
Well, I had an outstanding interaction with a company as a first time customer yesterday. If you haven’t seen or know about Recon K9, take a look at them. They have some specialty K9 products that I haven’t seen anywhere else.

I purchased an item and had questions about the product and shipping, so I reached out to them. I was contacted by Alex from the company. Really friendly guy that answered my question and represents the company well! I can recommend them based on the interaction we had.

Check them out!
