Scream for HELP!
Alright guys, our newest rescue that we pulled is really struggling and is needing some ER Vet care. Not only was she severely emaciated and only weighing in at 573 pounds when we got her, she is pregnant and has such terrible teeth that she has a hard time eating. On top of all this she has strangles, and her guttural pouches is extremely full of puss and despite all our attempts to get to rupture on it's own, she now going to be seen and have it drained and flushed. This is going to be a very expensive vet bill and we sure could use some help with donations, otherwise her care will be very limited to what we can afford. We would like to raise at least $500.00 to start, if we can receive more funding, we will have the vet also do the ultrasound to make sure the baby is still ok and also do a teeth float while we are there and sedated and being monitored.

FUN FACT FRIDAY! Are you familiar with the many adaptations that help your horse stay warm during the cold winter months?

🌾 Hindgut digestion of hay produces the most heat, acting as a small furnace inside of the horse. This is why free choice, good quality hay is so important in the winter.

💪 Horses have a huge muscle mass and muscle activity produces heat. This includes running and playing and even shivering if their body temperature starts to drop. It is important to remember that these activities also will result in a bigger caloric demand so free choice hay and in some cases, grain, is often needed.

🧥 To blanket or not to blanket is a constant debate but either way, as it starts to get cold your horse will grow a thicker coat. If you decide to leave your horse unblanketed you may notice that they look “fluffy”. This is due to a phenomenon called piloerection where the hair stands up to better trap air within. Two layers of the coat also help with warmth. The inner layer is softer and has air pockets to create an insulating layer. The outer layer is coarse and has oils that keep moisture from penetrating the insulating layer and keep the horse warm.

⚖️ Wild horses go into the winter heavier than ideal and the fat serves as an extra layer of insulation. However, if a horse is going to be kept heavily blanketed and in a barn during the cold weather months this is unnecessary and can lead to obesity related issues.

🦵Their distal limbs (below the knees and hocks) are made of mostly bones and tendons, tissues that are resistant to the cold temperatures.

🦶The hooves have an alternative route of blood circulation through larger vessels that can be used in low temperatures. This is why horses can stand in snow without detrimental effects.

👃A horse’s nose has a robust blood supply and is rounded so that it is less susceptible to frostbite than a human’s nose.

Border horse slaughter raised half the bail for this guy and there is $750 left. We would like to bring him home to the sanctuary here, where he can enjoy the last of his years. If I can have just 30 friends spare $25 we can raise his bail. Out of my 668 friend and 713 followers, I know we can do this! Donate through our rescue/sanctuary Venmo - or PayPal . I’ve been trying to tell you that I am in pain, but you don’t seem to listen.

I show you that I’m in pain by not being willing to work but you just call me 𝐬𝐭𝐮𝐛𝐛𝐨𝐫𝐧 or 𝐥𝐚𝐳𝐲. Instead of helping me, you just 𝐤𝐢𝐜𝐤 𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐞𝐫.

I show you that I’m in pain by rearing when you try to ride me, but you enjoy showing people you can sit to a rear. Instead of getting off and listening, you just say “𝐇𝐞’𝐬 𝐚𝐥𝐰𝐚𝐲𝐬 𝐝𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬, 𝐚𝐭 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐭 𝐢𝐭’𝐬 𝐠𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐧 𝐦𝐞 𝐚 𝐠𝐨𝐨𝐝 𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐭!”

I show you that I’m in pain by throwing my head in the air, but you just say it’s one of 𝐦𝐲 𝐯𝐢𝐜𝐞𝐬. Instead of helping me, you just buy 𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐠𝐚𝐝𝐠𝐞𝐭𝐬 so that I can no longer 𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐨𝐰 𝐦𝐲 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐝 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐚𝐢𝐫.

I show you that I’m in pain by bolting, but you just get scared and decide I’m not the one for you. You sell me and I still remain as 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐇𝐨𝐫𝐬𝐞 𝐓𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐈𝐬 𝐇𝐮𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠.

It’s our responsibility as animal owners to do right by them, horses can’t speak, they communicate through their actions. So we need to listen!

9/10 times “negative behaviour” is caused my pain, the rest is learnt behaviour. Either way I always check for pain first.

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐇𝐨𝐫𝐬𝐞 𝐓𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐈𝐬 𝐇𝐮𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠, deserves the world. The amount of tolerance, loyalty, patience and trust the hurting horse has, is something I can only dream of having.

This sweet boy started our live for the Great Dane breed. He turns 9 this month. Watching him age breaks my heart, but what a love bug he has been. Such a good boy. He is getting a little more grumpy and slowing. He still loves his car rides, pats and couch! We ❤️ you Jack! Another man’s trash ended up being our treasure!

After 8 weeks of some TLC we would like to welcome Silent Lucidity to team Scooby. She is a yearling that came to use terrified of human touch. We quickly established why by the rope halter damage on her face where you can see rope burns and open sores and skin missing where the knots of a halter would hit. She is learning her place in the herd, and that human touch is ok. She didn’t know what grains, alfalfa or any treaty’s are. She now loves grains and eats her alfalfa before all. Her favorite treats now are beer, still working on the carrots and peppermints. She also loves kids. Her BF is Wildfire of course. Welcome Henry to the team Scooby. Have no clue about turkeys but he will be feed, happy and loved! He will have free range and a area in the barn for him!
