Hello from the Hollow!

Tyler here, excited as can be to announce my new role here as the Farm Manager/Rider/Instructor.

I have over 18 years of experience in the Equitation/Hunter/Jumper worlds, but am delighted to broaden my horizons as I continue to learn more about the Western, Dressage, and Horsemanship fundamentals.

I believe that becoming a great rider means becoming a great horseman, which requires work, connection, and bonding both on and off the horse. I cannot wait to teach students of all levels and disciplines, and watch each rider grow relationships with the special horses we have here.

Please feel free to reach out to me or Megan with any questions or inquiries!

Happy riding 🦄!

So grateful to live on the trails!! Today couldn’t have been more beautiful — and can you tell whose elegant tail that is in front?! Yes, none other than our resident poet, the dressage prince Tennyson, who just might be a trail riding superstar! He crossed roads and water, climbed over logs and stone walls, and even held it together when enthusiastic kiddos came running over to say hello 🤩.

Playing with this handsome devil at liberty 😍

We had a casual session with simple goals: give him space to move and make his own choices, then engage his attention to begin teaching come when called. He did wonderfully!

Eleven is such a character — one of the cuter things he chose to do was take himself over trotting poles almost every time he passed by them. We were working in the whole arena and there was plenty of room to go around if he wanted — but he thought they were fun 🤣.

Over the hills and through the woods! Can’t stop thinking about the beautiful trails and roads through southern Vermont last weekend. So much gratitude to for these events existing!

Also, Gus and Russet like shadow and fire — shadows don’t show up so well in photos 🥷🏻! Anyone have advice on photographing dark horses so we can do justice to Gus next time?!

Miss Russet getting her post-ride vet check at the starter distance ride. We got a “good job” for her heart and respiratory rates 🤩

It was super interesting to learn how the distance riding world works! The emphasis on horse health and conditioning is inspiring, and it’s also unique in that people from all corners of the horse world can participate — and I rode in our jumper and western tack respectively. Of course, like any discipline the rabbit hole goes deep and there is a ton of specialized gear you can get! But the entry is wide open.

One of my goals in life is to do long rides — like, really long rides, cross country — and this was perhaps the first baby step towards that.

Thanks for the photo .beekeeper!!

We had the most gorgeous day at the Starter Distance Ride!! I’m not sure my chubby Russet is going to take me out for a hundred miler, but she sailed through the nine miles today and vetted beautifully at the end. Oh, and casually took first place on her elegant beast Gus, who eats nine mile rides for breakfast 🤣🏆

This photo from merits a post of its own — Cupcake has transformed from some kind of a blonde woolly mammoth to a golden seal! While I wouldn’t classify her as “in shape” just yet, she is looking pretty good for someone whose idea of exercise is to trot towards the hay bucket 🤣

Meet our handsome Tennyson, poet in residence!

Tennyson is our newest herd member, and comes to us as a step down from his illustrious show career. He is technically a Dutch Riding Pony, but he’s 15.2hh — taller than our quarter horse Russet. He was imported to the US at age 15 to help fulfill the dreams of a talented para equestrian, and logged some impressive credentials with her before finding his way here.

Tennyson was slightly skeptical of paddocks with slopes and turnout with ponies at first, but has become an enthusiastic convert! Now, he’s settling into a relaxing life as our dressage schoolmaster — and I have ambitions to make my way into the show ring with him at some point just for fun.

Our buttercream Cupcake 😍

We really struck gold bringing her home — she does it all. We give our youngest students leadline lessons, and she can teach the more advanced kiddos to post the trot, canter, and jump.

She’s juuuust big enough for small adults to ride and will tote us around on trail rides with the big horses.

And she’s a carriage driving pony, with whom we’ve spent magical hours at Rockefeller State Park on their amazing carriage roads.

We technically got her for Rowan but I think there are quite a few of us who call her “my pony” 😇. They say you never outgrow a Welsh, and it’s true.

The legendary Traveler! When I was younger, I was allowed to buy myself a pony on my birthdays (best policy ever, !!). Normally, I trained said pony to pull a carriage and then found them a new home (to, you know, make money to buy more ponies!!). Traveler and I weren’t to be parted though, and I’ve had him around 23 years — since he was a yearling.

Traveler knows many tricks (the most useful is coming when called!), was the fastest driving mini in Texas (I’ll stand by that claim 😇), and we’ve covered enough miles together to make good on his name.

Now, I’m delighted to report that Traveler has determined that his duty and destiny is to stand perfectly still while toddlers wielding brushes “groom” him, and then carefully tote them around. I’m beyond grateful that Rowan and the other little ones in our lives get to have him for a friend.

I’ve missed this view! It’s amazing to think that carriage driving was the big innovation in travel at one time — the ability to go faster, farther, and carry more than humans alone could manage. It’s a bit of a lost art today, but there’s actually a wonderful community around it that I hope to rejoin once I have a bit more time.

I got my start in horses through driving, because my first pony was a bit too small to ride and then I was hooked on cute ponies. Throughout middle and high school, I trained minis and ponies to drive and competed in Combined Driving — much more fun than the typical first job 😇.

Interested in learning about carriage driving? I’d love to connect with other drivers and mentor aspiring ones — please DM!

Dare I say it — perfect spring riding weather seems to be upon us! and our poet in residence, Tennyson have been blossoming together. Tennyson is an upper level dressage schoolmaster, but it’s an obsession with the basics that makes greatness and that’s what we’ve been focused on with him over the winter as we all get to know each other.

Tennyson is available for lessons for advanced students! DM for more info.

Happy solar eclipse day!! I think our area was 91% covered, and we had a surreal “golden hour” light at the farm during the peak. I can confirm that only the humans were excited by this phenomenon 🤣

Cupcake’s primary question related to the eclipse was “does it come with extra lunch?”

I think yellow is her color, how about you?! 😍

After way too long, for various and sundry reasons, I finally managed to get out on a proper trail ride with just Russet and me.

Horses usually don’t love going out alone (which they generally define as “no other horses” 🤣), so it becomes something of a litmus test for whether your horse considers you a reliable replacement for the courage of equine company. Russet is also just a gracious soul who has a memory full of positive humans (thanks !!) so it’s easier to establish that trust. In any case, we had a wonderful time!! We even stopped for a chat with some neighbors who were delighted to see Russet and shared memories of the horses of youth.

Does your horse ride out alone, or do you prefer company?

A gloomy day brightened by a quick test ride in my new-to-me saddle! So far it seems comfortable for both me and Russet.

The trouble with riding both English and Western is that I always look like someone who raided two different riders’ closets 🥸. Can I help it if English riding tights are the most comfortable articles of clothing ever?! Maybe I’ll look into western-flavored helmets. Or not. I’m always envious of dressed-to-match horses and riders, but alas — I’m not sure I’ll ever get there.

Battening down the hatches and tucking the horses in — twelve inches of snow is expected overnight!!

We haven’t had that much snow since the winter we moved in, and I can’t quite believe how different it feels to prepare now vs. then. We’ve learned a thing or two (like…drain your hoses 😜).

Stay warm, everyone!

There are few things that make me love life like packing a sandwich for a trail ride. This is where and I stopped for breakfast on our latest outing.

Not pictured: the spring fever that got into Eleven, for whom geese and trotting horses in a field were just too exciting today 🤣. Mile by mile, my friend.

Lunchtime rides are keeping me whole as I count down to longer days and balmy weather! I’m so fortunate to have flexibility in my hours so I can see daylight in winter. When I worked from an office in the city, I generally left home in the dark and returned in the same.
