Due to construction delays, we have decided to discount the entire month of October boarding to $69 a day (1 dog) for our IN HOUSE BOARDING!! That means your dog becomes a member of our family and stays with us inside our residence! Usually, there is a premium fee for this, but I felt like discounting it was the right thing to do. We love our clients like family, and we cannot wait to take care of your beloved dog this holiday season. ❤️ 🐶

I don’t know many 9 year olds that could command 7 dogs without an issue. 💙 He says he wants to be a dog trainer when he grows up. I know he 100% has what it takes!
We have begun taking a few “beta” clients to help us iron out all the kinks of our new boarding system. So far- so good! Enjoy these lovely photos my clients receive of their dogs as daily updates- for free. I believe everyone should have free and open communication with their boarders to check on their dogs. We will never have so many dogs in attendance that we don’t have time to chat with you. We want to stay small and keep the environment more like home and less like boarding- in every way!

**Holiday bookings will require a 20% deposit to reserve your space. If you notify us to cancel 14 days ahead of your booking appointment, you will receive your full deposit back. If the booking is fulfilled as scheduled, the deposit will be taken out of your overall stay total.

Happy 2nd birthday to our “forever puppy”, Roux! You’re a great addition to The Balanced Canine crew.
It is with great sadness that we announce we have lost the youngest member of our pack today. He was diagnosed with Wobblers & CD not too long ago. We tried medications to slow down his pain and suffering. Unfortunately, we couldn’t achieve a high enough quality of life. We decided to end his suffering today. I thought it was fitting when I realized it was Valentine’s Day. He was the biggest love to everyone he met, to a fault. He will forever be known to us as:
BackUp: the Golden Retriever in a Rottweiler coat.
Rest in peace. You’re a good boy, BackUp.

🚩 With the holidays upon us, and Christmas only 6 weeks away, I wanted to bring attention to something many will hear from a “breeder”.
If you are planning to get a puppy, or maybe know that your impulse control on purchasing a puppy is low, please take the following statements as serious warnings that you should choose another puppy from a different breeder. Not all one-time/hobby breeders are bad, and not all breeders with AKC labels are good. Take the time to get to know the breeder and their practices.
If you hear:
🚩 “Mom rejected the puppies, we are sending them home at 4/5/6/7 weeks.”
🚩 “They are fully weaned and on dry food! They are ready to go!” (Before 8 weeks)
🚩”We have a holiday trip coming up so we need them to go home now.” (Before 8 weeks)
🐾Take your money and run. Even if mom rejects the puppies, they are on dry food, or any other reason, those litter mates will learn vital social skills from each other even without mom. Bite inhibition isn’t started before 6 weeks, and it is not controlled until week 8-10. So, taking a pup early means you will be robbing them of vital time where they learn not only this skill, but many other social and behavior skills during that 1-4 weeks that they are taken home early.
Please understand that this is for information purposes only, and there are always exceptions to every rule. Some may get a puppy early, and through a lot of hard work, don’t see serious behavioral issues arise. I estimate 80% of my clients have pups that were taken away from the litter too soon.
The key phrase is TAKE YOUR TIME. I’m a firm believer that puppies shouldn’t be bought for surprise gifts, and never purchased on a whim without prior arrangements.
I don’t know that there is a better feeling than getting updates from clients on the positive changes that they are noticing.
I was called in to help this family partially because the rambunctious big puppy’s relationship with the established dog was extremely strained. The relationship between them is getting better after only a week of training! 🙌🏻
So, while these two laying next to each other may not seem like a “big win” to a casual onlooker, it has made a world of difference in the stress level in their home for canine and human alike. Good work y’all!
Just a humble reminder that tomorrow is not only Friday but also Veteran’s Day. We here at the Balanced Canine want to thank all those who have served and the families of those.
My uncle James was one of my favorite people
in the entire world. He served in our country’s military and then once home became Captain of a fire department in one of our nearby cities. Our thoughts are with all those put to rest and alive alike, and we have gratitude to you for serving our country.
How do your dogs do coming inside or leaving through a threshold? Do they crash into you or race you through? We have worked faithfully to get our dogs to this point. BackUp has been the hardest to get impulse control on. However, when I put in the work, I have yet to not be happy with the results! Fair & Consistent is the way to achieve results!

Today is Valor’s 4th birthday! We are so glad that she is part of our family as well as part of our extended Balanced Canine family. She continues to help teach other dogs important social skills, coping strategies, and aids in training. She is the one and only Valor! Happy Birthday girl. 🎁

Taking turns is something that doesn’t always come naturally to dogs. Training is all about finding moments you can spare to use towards practicing your goals. A little peanut butter on a spoon is a great way to start. Now that I know Archie can do this, it’s time to try it with all 4 dogs!

When your 4.5lb co worker locks you out of the car with the keys inside…🤣 But thankfully the car was on with ac running. She also manages to roll down the back window a couple inches- just enough to stick a golf club through!

In life, never seriously contemplate that you have it all figured out. “Always learning” has been a motto for my adult life. I finally have accepted that BackUp is here to stretch me in new ways. He has been 💯 THE hardest dog I have ever had the “pleasure” to crate train. He has been showing little clues along the way that he is getting it. This past week he has been “putting himself to bed” about 9:30. YES! 🙌🏻 Then today, he chose to nap inside instead of out on the kitchen floor. He is beginning to treat it like a safe space- which is EXACTLY how the crate should be treated.
I was so honored to help my nephew, Ben, with his first science experiment. It was pretty fun going around to my friends’ homes & letting him meet all our different dog friends. I am so proud of him!
This is just a friendly reminder that I do NOT offer boarding at this time. Please take note that Spring Break is CLOSE! Start calling your normal boarders/friends/neighbors to get your pets taken care of. Unfortunately, I am not a backup option at this point. You will hear me say it over and over again. Threshold training. Threshold training. Threshold training. It is not just nice manners; it is for safety! Roux is tiny, and still working on this impulse control. A small dog like her has no chance of being seen by cars should she run out and head towards the street. I was very happy to see her wiggling in position didn’t prompt Big boy pup there to move. BackUp, however, is 15 weeks today. He is already doing very well. This was our second time practicing this with him. Good job, big puppy!
This handsome Golden Retriever is Copper. Copper stepped up and helped me at an appointment that my girl, Valor, was unable to attend. The dog we were working with has leash reactivity and aggression when he sees other dogs on walks. He turns from a giant Teddy Bear to a Grizzly Bear! Copper did everything perfectly, not responding or escalating the situation. Way to go in aiding a new friend on his rehabilitation journey, Copper! Thank you! 🧡

Aww puppyhood. With most puppies, working on impulse control at 9 weeks old would be pretty tough. BackUp is doing us proud. Of course, having a toddler & kids around dropping snacks often makes for impromptu mini training sessions. 🐾 Good job, BackUp!

Training everyday. My clients hear me say that often. It’s not about spending hours on the weekend trying to produce results. It’s as simple as finding a few minutes daily to practice the things that lead to your goals. We’ve had good days with this, as well as bad days with this. Tonight, I took advantage of having some left over rib meat to work on it again. Working with high (VERY high) value food items can be a recipe for disaster if you used it the first attempt. What you see here is the result of finding a few minutes a day to work on the bond with your dog. Valor & Roux- I’m so proud of you.
Valor is working on a major title upgrade. She is getting put back to work this week with mini training sessions of distraction training & heel work. She still limps every so often, but overall she is doing wonderfully. Thanks for all the good thoughts, prayers, and well wishes.
