It's such a pleasure getting to serve you and your animals.

Seeing their happy faces and wagging tails makes the struggle of owning a small business all worth it.

RIP Big Mac. It was an honor and privilege to serve you

📌 This month, I wanted to address a commonly asked question I get asked: when should you take your pet to the chiropractor?

👉🏻 Recognizing pain in animals

Pets are not like people. A common survey amongst pet parents showed that over 80% of pet owners think an animal will vocalize or cry out when they are in pain. However, that is not reality. It's very common that a pet will hide their symptoms for as long as possible in an effort to "push through the pain" as they are hardwired for survival. The most common reasons pet parents call an animal chiropractor is actually for behavior changes

👉🏻 What is animal chiropractic?

Animal chiropractic is a non-surgical, drug-free approach that involves adjusting the vertebrae of the spine and/or joints of an animal in order to correct improper motion of the musculoskeletal system.

Animal chiropractic can only be legally provided by a trained professional such as a veterinarian or chiropractor. Certification through an associations such as the AVCA or IVCA is preferred when choosing a provider.

👉🏻 When should you take your pet to the chiropractor?

Simply put: as soon as possible. An animal chiropractor can be an extremely valuable part of your animal's health care team.

Starting a puppy with routine care can help minimize alignment problems as they grow and mature.

Routinely getting your sport dog seen for performance enhancement can help decrease wear and tear on their system and support recovery.

Should you pet be not showing pain, but maybe is showing some intermittent behavior or gait changes, it would be a good idea to get them checked out.

As your pet ages and you see signs of pain, it's a good idea to get them adjusted to minimize joint pain and help mitigate progression of symptoms

Not all spines are made the same.

It's important to ask about your provider's qualifications prior to letting them work on your animal.

Adjusting a human spine is very different than adjusting a horse or a dog. In this picture, you can see the differences in cervical spine anatomy

Only chiropractors and veterinarians may take an additional 210+ hour course in animal chiropractic. This course allows them to then sit for examination to prove proficiency (such as the exams offered by the AVCA or IVCA)

Should your provider not have these qualifications, they are unlikely to carry appropriate qualifications or insurance and you may not see measurable improvements in your animal post treatment.

It's important to choose licensed and trained professionals for your 4 legged companions

We pride ourselves on being AVCA certified at In Stride Chiropractic

📌 This month, I wanted to address the elephant in the room: Librela. This is a new treatment that many vets are now using to address osteoarthritis.

(I am sharing a blog post written by Dr. Darryl Millis, a well respected board certified orthopedic vet and surgeon.)

👉🏻 What is Nerve Growth Factor?

"Nerve Growth Factor (NGF) is a protein that plays a role in pain transmission, and elevated levels of NGF contribute to pain and inflammation in the joints. NGF also plays a crucial role in promoting the growth, maintenance, and survival of nerve cells (and this gives some clues regarding when NOT to use anti-NGF antibodies – see below). By blocking the action of NGF, anti-NGF antibodies can reduce pain signals from the joints, resulting in pain relief for dogs with arthritis. "

👉🏻How does Librela work?

" By inhibiting the function of nerve growth factor, anti-NGF antibodies effectively alleviate arthritis symptoms in dogs.

When administered by injection, anti-NGF antibodies bind to nerve growth factor molecules in the body, preventing them from binding to nerve cells and transmitting pain signals. By interrupting this process, anti-NGF antibodies offer a targeted approach to pain management in arthritic dogs."

👉🏻 Would you use it if it were your dog?

"Based on the current information regarding possible side effects and treatment effectiveness, I would only use it if my dog was already thin (not overweight), current pain management for osteoarthritis was no longer effective or liver or kidney disease was present rendering them unable to take NSAIDs, and (if my dog) had end stage osteoarthritis.

My concerns are that other available treatments may be more effective... treatment [too early] may result in reduction of joint position awareness, potentially increasing the progression of osteoarthritis, and there is the possibility of neurologic side effects."

Does your horse's topline look well... not great? This could be due to unresolved back pain!

Chiropractic care is so valuable because our animal's cannot tell us if they are hurting. Horses, for example, will assume certain postures to avoid pain.

Sandy here had a dramatic improvement in her symmetry and overall posture in just 4 visits.

📌 In this month's blog post we cover tips for weight management. This topic is SO important as obesity can decrease your pet's lifespan and put extra stress and strain on their joints.

In this blog post, we go over:

🔵 How to identify if your pet is overweight

👉🏻 A body condition scoring system can be used in addition to or in absence of a traditional scale. I love using body scoring as it is a standardized means of knowing how a pet is doing with their weight management.

The condition scoring system can be somewhat subjective, but I highly recommend keeping a regular eye on your dogs waist and their ribcage to make sure that are not carrying extra fat where they shouldn't be.

🔵 How to feed your pet the appropriate amount of calories

👉🏻 Your pet's caloric needs are based upon math. Nobody likes math... but there are several dog food calculators on the internet that make this process stupid easy: you can type in your dog's ideal weight, your pet food's kCal count and BOOM! You have an unemotional number to target for your pet's daily requirements.

🔵 Ideas for weight management

👉🏻 Now that you have an idea on how MUCH to feed, now we can talk about some strategies to work within our "calorie budget" for your animal.

Consider feeding veggies (as treats or toppers), limit free feeding, weigh your pet's food, and consider slow feeding options to add enrichment.

Throwback to Gracie's amazing transformation.

Gracie had a rough start to life as a puppy and her vet team suspected a neurological issue that she may never recover from.

We were so excited to play a small part in Gracie's healing and recovery so that she could grow into the normal, healthy dog that she was always meant to be!

Aren't you all so happy that I have converted Eryn of to the dark side?

Eryn started as a client. During the course of treatment, I recommended massage for her dogs. Once she saw how much they benefitted, she decided to go and get trained herself!

I'm so humbled to have her working together with me at dog shows to help your canine athletes perform their best.

Thank you for all of our dog show clients for allowing us to serve you!

Our Story

Pets have the same spine as people. It’s about time they have the same options for treatment.

In Stride Chiropractic is trained and certified by the American Veterinary Chiropractic Association to assess and address dysfunction in your pet’s musculoskeletal system. We find areas that aren’t moving appropriately and/or are in improper alignment and apply a gentle hands on or instrument assisted ADJUSTMENT. The adjustment gets joints moving again so your pet can feel better and get back to living their life.

We are a specialty practice. In the state of Texas, we require veterinary clearance prior to seeing your animal. We always recommend you start your pet’s healing journey at a vet office in order to rule out “big scary things.” Pets suppress their symptoms to avoid appearing “weak” so a small symptom could actually mean a huge problem. We also need to know about the underlying conditions your animal has in order to safely and effectively treat your pet. Once a clearance form is filled out, we will be able to set up an appointment and render treatment.

Our mission is to...
