This is Don's 2nd heelwork session. We are using the XL size Gentle Leader head halter for this big guy, a clicker, and his dog food. He has taken to this skill so quickly and wasn't phased at all by the head halter, which can take a lot of dogs some time to accept wearing. He went from forging ahead of me to slightly lagging a bit to watch me more as he tightens up his coordination and response times to my changes in direction. As he gets more confident, his lagging should decrease so I'm not concerned about that. Don the #mysterymutt has really exceeded my expectations for him at this stage in his training with me 💫

Working session with Don the #mysterymutt on some coordination skills for this big guy. I have him doing higher place work to simulate jumping into my SUV so we can go places later to practice. He's much too big to pick up and if he gets nervous or unsure of new things, he will flat out refuse to move. So his cooperation is essential!!

Gable the #bostonterrier doing some doorbell desensitization training. I really should have taken before video as she would bark nonstop for 30 seconds at least if she heard the ring doorbell sound and go racing around the house in excitement. We've done lots of "ring" and treat so now she perks up and waits for her yummy reward to arrive. We also did some leave-it, ring the bell, and heelwork in this video.

We took advantage of cooler temps thanks to some summer rain showers with a quick run in the Big Yard and a little recall work for Gable. Weather like this makes me ready for Fall and the way the dogs were running, I think they concur! Training in hot weather is challenging and can be even harder on snub nosed dogs like Gable so we have to be extra careful not to let her be in high temps for too long or too let her over exert herself during play or training sessions. SHORT play/training sessions are a must when outdoors in the summer with lots of water, shade, and forced breaks to cool off for any dog. If a dog is panting hard, it is time for a break, even if they don't want to take one. Keep your dogs safe during these Dog Days of Summer!

Keira the #pitbull working on her heeling....she is being taught to heel on the right side since one of her family members uses a cane on the left. She isn't perfect on her stays in public but overall she has made so much improvement to get to this stage. Even though she got distracted at times, she was able to stay quiet instead of barking at people near her. Fighting her impulsive nature is hard as she is a girl on the move most of the time! She did a great job today.

RV sleepover with Keira the #pitbull. We are at a local dog show competing and Keira came along for the ride. The Treat and Train is a much used tool for occupying Keira's downtime in the RV while I'm busy and it slows down her eating....this girl can clean a bowl in seconds!

I've withheld a lot of Max's training videos that I've collected over the past few weeks. He's made so much progress from where he started. This is just the beginning of more fun adventures into the world for him. A dog that drags you around is not a fun dog to walk and can be very scary to other people and dogs. Keira the #pitbull doing some loud sound desensitization training while I also get some much needed yard work done. She did much better with this than I actually expected her to with this scary loud hedge clipper. I've witnessed her startle and run out of the room several times when scared by a sudden loud sound....including the Netflix "da dong" sound when opening up that app on the TV! She is used to living in a quiet household so it is very understandable why she is so quick to startle with loud noises, plus she is a young puppy. Since the world is full of loud noises that we can't control, she will need to learn to be comfortable so it doesn't cause her anxiety in the future.
