Texas Best Choices Animal Rescue was born out of a deep love and concern for animals. It began because of the huge need in a community with no city or county animal services. Many times puppies, pregnant dogs, and unwanted dogs are left at our entrance or tied to our gate overnight. They are all in need of a safe place to live and recover from the harsh life of being hungry and homeless or unwante

d. Adoption is our ultimate goal for these precious animals and we have found homes for hundreds. There are many heartwarming stores of our furry friends finding the right home and the joy they bring to those that have adopted them. We believe in providing more than ust a place for pets to wait for their forever home, as we are a happy place where the dogs thrive as they wait. It is our goal to provide long term care if needed or the opportunity through adoption to give each dog the store that... (read more)

I’m Roo and I was named for my oversized (kangaroo) ears. I have never met a stranger, human or canine. All kinds of people fascinate me and I get along with other dogs. Playing in the yard is one of my strengths as I can entertain myself, but I prefer to be right next to you. I can adapt my energy level to yours. If you want, I can watch movies with you on the couch, but I prefer to go hiking or walking around the neighborhood or the local parks. I will go try anywhere with you. New places are begging to be explored; I’m ready to see the world. I’m very intelligent and I have learned a few basic commands, but I could use a brush-up with a patient trainer. I’m spayed, HW negative, and up to date on all my vaccinations. What’s not to love? I’m 47 pounds, about 1 1/2 years old, and the leash is my friend. I don’t like crates, but I’m willing to learn to please you. I’m waiting for you to get here so we can go exploring!

This week has been BE Kind to Animals Week and we have so many stories of wonderful adoptions over the years that exemplifies this theme. I was invited to see a TBC alum adopted about 5 yrs ago as his parents were taking a few days at our Lake Tawakoni. Re*****on now Beau is living his best life with Jennifer and Greg and it was a thrill for me to spend some time with them. He’s a BBD- big black dog - my favorite! He was my fave at the rescue until Jen and Greg gave him a fabulous home. Thank you for letting me love on this gorgeous guy!

I have sad news. Our baby Lauryn did not make it . Our Vet called this morning. We had both been so hopeful but her little 1.9 lb body was struggling. Our hearts are hurting. We tried so hard. This photo was taken yesterday in ICU. Our little Angel was loved in her short time with us and will not be forgotten. Rest well precious.

Update on our tiny pup… she made it through the night ! Her temp is up to 97 and her glucose is just a little low. She is not out of the woods but all of our prayers are working!

We need prayers for this tiny pup. She was one of 3 found in a box on a county road. She is the runt and all were inundated with hookworms. She was 2.8 lb and digressed quickly. We took her home to force feed liquids and baby food. She was at Vet on Sat and given heavy antibiotics and vitamins to battle theGI bleed from the worms. Today she went back as she was not doing well after multiple feedings day and night. Her temp was low and they suspect sepsis. She is in ICU now and we are all praying she makes it. Her name is Lauryn and we love her. The red tinge on her fur is from the flavored pedialyte. Vet said she’s a fighter but we need a miracle. 🙏🏼🐾❤️

Beautifully written story about Otis if you have a minute!

It has been a few years and I thought you might want to know how Otis is doing. I adopted him on Father's Day in 2020 and he has been with us ever since. Otis is 13 years old now, still large, still strong, still fairly active when he has to be. He doesn't really like doing much except sleeping these days. His favorite spot is his kennel and he likes it closed up with blankets on the inside and outside. He's definitely a den animal. He digs a hole in the rugs, sheets, and blankets that I've lined his kennel with and even when he's just wandering around the house, he eventually winds up in there. I've watched him try to shut his kennel door with his nose and it is sadly amusing. If only he had opposable thumbs!

Otis still occasionally barks at his food bowl, but it's usually because it's wobbling. I may have set it down on a root or something. I think he thinks some terrifying demon is under the food bowl and is trying to get out. I go out there and fix it and he's fine. Except for the food bowl itself, nothing gets in the way of his appetite.

We've been out and about a few times and Otis has caught some rats but mostly geckos. He snacks on these guys. One time late at night I had him in the back yard about to bring him in and was getting the leash on him. As soon as I snapped it into place, we both heard some rustling under the back fence. Otis tears off in the direction of the noise and being that he's huge, I went with him albeit somewhat unwillingly. I was thinking, no way is he going to catch whatever that was, he's so huge and slow. Well, we walk into the pool of light just outside the windows of the back and I turn around to look at him and he's got the back end of a rat complete with long pink tail hanging out of his mouth. I must have had a look of shock on my face. Otis was actually grinning at me!

Then while he's looking straight at me, he chomped down and I heard the backbone snap and the tail slowly disappeared as he swallowed the thing whole. Then he licked his lips and tried to lick me as well. I stepped way out of his way. Yeesh!!! I was never the same after that. It does explain why there are no rats left in the yard anymore though. He seasons his dinner with whatever geckos he can find. Some of them are night movers and these ones are particularly at risk. Otis is all about the nighttime snack if he's outside for whatever reason. Every time we go for a walk, he also gets takeout by drinking from the mud puddles. I don't know if he's missing a nutrient or something and that's why he's doing it, but I will check with the vet on our next visit.

I have a friend from Turkey and he told me back home, they use these dogs to protect the herds in Eastern Turkey. The cold, cold nights and the hot days in full sun. He said as far as he knows and his family is one of these families, they don't buy dog food for their dogs; the dogs keep themselves fed on the rodents that are so plentiful. These dogs as a team can bring down a wolf or a bear. So I did not know that they were bred for that, but it makes sense with some of the behavior I have seen. Plus he was feral for a time, so Otis is probably used to feeding himself anyway. Now he uses this once necessary behavior as a chance to spice up his dinner with a few condiments.

He's always pronounced as healthy at the vet. I've changed up his food a couple of times, trying to get his weight down because he was overweight and he had some bloating. Everyone is actually surprised when I tell them his age. He still acts a lot like a puppy. Although he still has some remnants of that fear that I first mentioned a while back. That spot he used to chew on his hip is now completely gone and has been for years.

Otis has his people and he is always with me. He lounges around in the backyard when I've been working at the picnic table, he's my constant companion when I'm working at the dining room table, he expresses his displeasure when he's interrupted or when anyone tries to take my attention away from him. He adjusts quickly, but he does make note of it quite audibly. Unless it's a matter of food, he will not rise from the kennel. He just loves that place. I would have thought it would seem more like a prison or a time-out, but he finds security in there.

When we go out to my parents' house in Grand Saline, Otis becomes a night-owl dog. He would prefer to be in the house, but as soon as he gets in, he's wondering what he's missing by being inside, so we have to let him back out. It's constant. He finally let us know that he preferred sleeping on the patio at night so he can be the first to catch the snakes, scare away the deer, bark at the hogs and let them know who's boss, and attack the armadillos. He has a very active nightlife. He's not really around other dogs because he's got such a full schedule of sleeping and patrolling the grounds.

Anyway, you needn't worry about him. We had a few rough patches, but Otis is decidedly where he belongs and he's not leaving. I always try to adopt senior dogs because they are often passed over and when I get old, I don't want people to do the same to me. Otis will have more happy years, just a little later than most dogs, but he will get them.

He's right next to me now, all curled up in his nest of blankets, snoring away. He'll do this probably a couple or three more hours, then will absolutely insist on going outside and getting his food. Then he will laze around in the sun and drink some water if all the mud puddles are dried up. Shortly after, he will let me know when he expects to come back in. I will be out there with him for some of it, but not all. I've got a lawn to mow and Otis likes to clear the path for me.

I read your email on the troubles you are having. That is a shame. On our Nextdoor posts, there is always a clamor to get the dogs from the shelters around Dallas, Plano, and Rockwall that are due to be euthanized that day. Most of them from what I can gather are dropped off by their own owners because they have become unwanted. They should adopt from you!

We named him Gus, and he is such a great puppy! House trained no accidents, crate trained during sleep hours and sleeps all night with no accidents! He’s just the sweetest, not the wild Indian I saw from the kennel. He’s a mamas boy for sure! Loves to nap in my lap! Only complaint is that you forgot to mention he snores🤣🤣
Thank you Tammy for giving him a great home!!!! We have more from this litter waiting patiently for their forever home! Text Karen 214-535-5230.

Courtesy Post for this beautiful girl that was lost or dumped and an elderly couple needs help to find her a home. They call her Gigi. She is about 4 and has a tattoo where she has been spayed. All other details are what they have learned about her in the few weeks they have cared for her. She is good with other dogs- better with males and good with children. No vaccination history but TBC could assist with this. Described as Lab mix but obviously has something else- perhaps some cattle dog in her. Pls share to help this elderly couple place her in a loving home. Contact Karen at TBC to help facilitate her rehoming. 213-535-5230.
