Animals Abused & Abandoned makes direct payments to veterinarians for emergency medical and surgical care for dogs, cats and horses, that are victims of traumatic injuries and that have been abused, starved and abandoned by their owners. Many of these stories feature an animal that was rescued by a small, under-funded, volunteer organization. Payments are made directly to the veterinarians providi

ng the care that relieved these animals from their suffering as a result of traumatic injury, life-threatening illness, starvation and abandonment.

Mojo and his companion Mutley were running loose on the outskirts of a large city. Animal Control was called, but they were unable to catch them after a frantic chase. Several days later the two vagabonds were reported to be sitting in a field. As Animal Control approached them this time, neither tried to run. The younger dog was injured. The older one stayed by his side, refusing to leave him. Scroungy and severely malnourished, both dogs were taken to the municipal shelter where Mutley was quickly saved by a local rescue group, Mojo as well, but by a different group.

Mojo had a veterinary appointment where the rescue organization was told that this young dog had a severe fracture to his right hind leg. Animals Abused & Abandoned agreed to pay for the surgery. Amputation was the least expensive option, but being only about 12 months old, we chose to try to save the leg. The fracture was extensive and would require an experienced orthopedic surgeon. The operation turned out to be more challenging than first anticipated. The femur had begun to heal misaligned, so the bone had to be broken and reset with a plate and screws. When that procedure was complete, the vet neutered him as well.

Mojo is still in foster care, His recovery is guarded. He has had several set-backs. His foster mom reports that he is recovering slowly and hopefully should be walking normally in the near future.

Animals Abused & Abandoned is always paying for surgeries, sterilizations, heartworm treatments, special diets and medications, dental care, food and more food. These innocent, helpless and highly sentient creatures that we share this planet with merit a gentle and healthy quality of life, security, and a loving and respectful home. As a donor you play a major role in relieving their undeserved suffering. Please help us continue this work by clicking here. Your kind and thoughtful generosity is genuinely appreciated.

This beautiful, bay colored, young mare was rescued from a kill pen in north Texas. Her rescuer was not able to find anyone to adopt her, so our trainer asked Animals Abused & Abandoned to help him save her. Underweight and frightened, she was transported to his training facility. His equine vet gave her a thorough examination and reported that though 200+ pounds underweight she had no injuries or diseases that he could find. After she was treated by both an equine dentist and a farrier, she joined the trainer’s other horses where she ate and ate and ate while decompressing and bonding with her new equine pals. Animals Abused & Abandoned funded her purchase price from the rescuer who could not keep her, and all veterinary, dental and farrier expenses to complete her physical rehabilitation.

During her first 4 months of rehab and gentle care, the trainer gained enough of her trust to saddle and ride her. Animals Abused & Abandoned funded all food and training costs during this period. Soon, a calm and much healthier Posey demonstrated her willingness to be ridden by both beginning riders and experienced horsemen.

One of those experienced horsemen offered to buy her to join his family’s other horses on their nearby ranch. She has found a forever home and is living out her second chance at life as a well-loved family horse.

For 17 years Animals Abused & Abandoned has provided equine vet and
dental care, medications, hay, grains and farrier services for innocent
and helpless horses that have been pulled from kill pens, abandoned by
their owners, or seized by the local county sheriff. To accelerate the rehoming of these graceful and beautiful animals, we also
began paying for training so that fully rehabilitated horses can be
safely ridden for pleasure and companionship. We fed, medicated,
groomed and trained 52 abused and abandoned horses in 2023 alone at a cost
slightly more than $30,000. Not including the ones we have helped this year and all
from the past 17 years.

Listening to a phone message, the person’s voice betrayed grave concern about her Chihuahua who had not been feeling well for about one week or more. Could I call her back?

The lady related that her little dog was listless, not eating or drinking, bloated, oozing foul smelling drainage from her rectum/vagina. She did not have the money to take her to the vet, would Animals Abused & Abandoned consider helping save her pet. She was asked to take the animal urgently to the vet and we would contact the clinic to make payment arrangements.

As soon as Minnie arrived, she had an ultrasound which confirmed an enlarged, fluid/pus filled uterus. Minnie was so extremely weak! Lab results indicated she was most anemic. She was covered with fleas. The clinic had an emergency situation on their hands. She was aggressively treated with IV fluids and antibiotic therapy. She had to be stabilized prior to being admitted for surgery with the diagnosis of pyometra, a potentially life-threatening infection of the uterus.

This small dog was in grave danger and her doctor was most guarded about her survival. Thirty-six hours later, Minnie had made enough progress that her vet took the chance to operate late at night. Her uterus was removed uneventfully. The next 24 hours were touch and go.

She clung to life! But before Minnie could be discharged, she had to have more IV antibiotics. She had to start eating of her own volition. A day later she went home with scheduled follow-up appointments. Even the vet breathed a sigh of relief! He had had poor hope this sweet dog would survive this surgery. The odds were stacked against her. But thanks to the vet for a job well done, Minnie recovered nicely and is now feeling 100%.

If you wish to be part of the next success story, please donate to Animals Abused & Abandoned. There will be another dog or cat in need of urgent care. Any amount will be most appreciated.
