Concerned about Avian influenza in cats? See the website below for more information. The best ways to limit exposure is keeping your cats indoors, avoiding raw food diets, and refrain from feeding unpasteurized milk.

Since the U.S. outbreak of avian influenza A (H5N1) in dairy cattle began in March 2024, dozens of cats are known to have contracted the virus, including barn and feral cats, indoor cats, and big cats in zoos and in the wild (e.g., mountain lions, tigers, leopards, and bobcats).

This is a severe case of periodontal disease. This means that the bacteria from dental tartar has caused inflammation and infection of the tissues surrounding the teeth, including the gums, ligaments, and bone. This can lead to pain, tooth loss, and bacteria entering the blood stream, potentially causing systemic inflammation or infection. This dog required all remaining teeth to be extracted. While it sounds harsh, she now lives pain-free and is much healthier overall!

We love good before and after photos from our dentals! This patient is a Sphynx breed cat who was noted to have significant brown and black staining to nearly all his teeth at the time of his exam. Upon his comprehensive dental evaluation including x-rays, he luckily did not require any extractions. A complete cleaning including scaling, polishing, and fluoride treatment was performed which removed his tartar and majority of the staining. Interestingly, it’s believed that Sphynx cats have a genetic condition that can lead to this!
