When you have as many animals as I do, there always seems to be at least one not feeling well. This time it's Ned the guinea pig. Fortunately, what I feared to be a blockage of some sort turned out to be a UTI. Still no fun, but much easier to treat! A round of antibiotics and a few days of pain medication should fix him right up!

Along with today's vet visit, I also made a trip to Wild Whiskers for some supplement advice. Mariah is always a wealth of knowledge and gave me some helpful info on products to try. Of course, I also got a few treats for the pups and kitty! Walking back to my car, I saw this adorable (though very out of place) mallard couple enjoying the soggy weather ๐Ÿฅฐ

Since his buddy Ed died, I have been trying to really up my enrichment offerings for Not Ed (whose name has now been shortened to Ned). I am really not in a position to adopt another pig if not absolutely necessary and, since Ned previously lived alone, I am hoping that increased enrichment and time with me will be enough.

Today's enrichment involved enjoying some delicious microgreens from Dayton Microgreens by an open window for sunshine and fresh air ๐Ÿ–

โ€ผ๏ธ Please note: this is NOT Ned's primary enclosure and is not suitable for any guinea pig to live in full time. This is what I call his vacation home, a small cage that we keep in the main part of the house so he can spend a couple hours a day where all the action happens.

We lost little Ed today ๐Ÿ’” What started as a simple respiratory infection turned out to be secondary to some more serious underlying issues. I spent weeks medicating, hand feeding, and supporting him in any way I could as the vet tried to figure out what was going on. Tumors are not uncommon in guinea pigs, but testing showed he didn't have any. Blood work is tricky in guinea pigs so I opted not to risk that, but we also checked his urine to rule out some other things. Process of elimination led to him eventually being diagnosed with hyperthyroidism and I got his medication from the compounding lab on Saturday. He started it the same day and pretty quickly declined. Guinea pigs are very sensitive little creatures, making medicating and/or sedating very risky. It is my belief that he was already in such rough shape that adding one more thing was simply too much on his tired body.

He was a sweet little guy, though not a snuggler. He preferred to be talked to and occasionally asked for attention by standing as tall as possible up against the cage bars. He loved snacking on the crunchiest part of romaine hearts and exploring when his home was newly rearranged. He was a joy to know and I am glad I had the opportunity.

Thanks for the new licky mats, Wild Whiskers! Both pups love them and the kitty will try one at breakfast tomorrow.

I spent the last hour cleaning the bird room and sat down at the table for a quick break. I wasn't seated even 2 minutes before everybody came to see what I was doing ๐Ÿ˜† The dogs know that's where the humans eat dinner and the chicken knows it's where I sit to hand feed her. It never ends around here!

One of our smallest friends had his first vet visit today! Ed has had a runny nose ๐Ÿคง and some unusual breathing, which of course pointed to a respiratory infection. The vet confirmed my suspicion and started him on antibiotics, but not before giving him a few "emotional support apples" for being such a brave little boy ๐Ÿฅน

The vet said he is otherwise in great shape, besides being on the thin side due to illness related weight loss. I went over his cage size, diet, and enrichment options to make sure I am doing everything right and she was happy with everything! She did note that I should increase his greens a bit, so I'll be getting more to choose from next grocery trip. Now we just have to hope whatever he has doesn't spread to his brother, Not Ed๐Ÿคž

A little puppy crunchin' ASMR for your Sunday morning. We absolutely love the selection of raw food and single ingredient treats at Wild Whiskers! Today the dogs are having Gunni's Wolffish Skin Shorties and the kitty had a minnow scavenger hunt using minnows from Northwest Naturals.

Highly recommend trying wolffish if your dogs love fish but you hate the scaly mess cod skins leave behind (I know I do). Wolffish is also a little more of a crunchy challenge than cod, which starts to become soft and soggy pretty quickly.

If you are a rescue worker, or perhaps you just have a large animal family, you know how stressful it can be to find help if you need to travel. I am fortunate that my little brother is always willing to help us, but traveling for my sister's wedding put us in a bind since the whole family was going.

My new friend Aubri appeared just when I needed her. I saw her post offering farm/home/pet sitting in a local group and messaged her right away. Not only was she willing to take on my huge crew, but she had years of prior experience with nearly every species at the Acres! She did a fantastic job, following all of my instructions exactly and sending regular updates. We would absolutely book with her again!

Aubri services the Dayton, OH area and has given me permission to share her number for anyone interested. Text is best and the number is (937) 974-5329. Tell her Abbey sent you!

Ruth is enjoying a leisurely epsom salt float to take pressure off a sore leg tonight ๐Ÿ›€ She's been doing a lot of limping and laying around over the past few days, but the leg feels/looks normal, so I'm thinking it's a simple soft tissue injury. An epsom salt soak is great, but a float is even better since it allows her to take all pressure off the leg. Swimming is also beneficial for the healing process, so to the bath we went! Hopefully a few of these floats will have her back to normal in no time ๐Ÿคž
