A little wet bird appreciation for your weekend! Everyone got a 🛁 today plus nail trims 💅for Peabody and the littles. Nobody got a super soak, but they all got at least a bit freshened up. Paula and Peabody not pictured as they are too busy plotting my death for water boarding them 😊

Miss Joanie had her first vet visit and got a glowing report! The vet absolutely adored her and she pulled out ALL the stops to impress her. She received her vaccinations and tested FELV negative 🥳 I did forget to bring her stool sample for worm testing though...so that will be another day.

In addition, she just went into heat for the first time and poor girl is going THROUGH it! I never knew a cat could be so loud. RIP to our ears🪦

In an unexpected turn of events, the Acres have become home to a kitty! I have always enjoyed cats in other homes, but never really thought my own would be appropriate. With dogs, birds, an indoor chicken, and dozens of houseplants, it just seemed like a disaster waiting to happen. However, it hurts me to see so many cats discarded and suffering. Not only that, but John falls in love with kitties everywhere he goes and the idea of adopting a cat as his own special companion had been on my heart for a while.

All of that aside, I had no specific plans of when (or IF) we would ever actually bring a kitty home. I went to a new friend's house to pick up a plant and a sweet little kitty ran right to me, begging for attention. I greeted and picked her up and my friend said she had been dumped there a while back but did not work out as an inside pet due to the dog of the house being aggressive with her. She had been feeding the cat and provided her with straw in the barn so she could stay warm, but she knew she should really be indoors and begged me to take her. I called John and she was riding home in my lap within the hour!

John named her Joanie after one of his favorite women of all time, his YiaYia. She has settled in beautifully so far and doesn't mind any of the other animals she has met. She will, of course, not have access to the bird room at all.

Welcome home, little Joanie! You are beautiful and loved!

It's 7° here in Ohio and feels like -11° with wind chill, so the outdoor crew is warming up with a steaming helping of oatmeal with blueberries, cinnamon, and mealworms!

I was cleaning the bird room yesterday and Paula was doing her very best to distract me. From dancing, to asking for attention, to shredding cardboard where I had just swept, she pulled out all the stops!

The girls don't really like leaving their coop when the weather gets cold and grey, and I don't blame them! However, I know it's important for them to still get fresh air and exercise, so I try to give them incentive (in the form of snacks) to come out. This peck toy from Omlet is a great way to make them work for their treats!

Also, listen close at the end for a cute "hey honey" from my sweetheart 😍

I was feeling discouraged over an animal situation I can't change, so I sought solace amongst some of the animals I WAS able to help. Watching these girls preen, play, and drink in their pool or forage for mealworms in the straw always lifts my spirits. I find that watching them helps to slow down my thoughts and give me peace. Perhaps it is because they are such an example of living in the moment and enjoying life's simple pleasures. They don't think about the life they were rescued from and they don't worry about what tomorrow will bring. They are focused on right now, and all the fun a freshly cleaned pool and hidden mealworm treasures can bring.

I spent time with the chickens too and I always love to watch them race each other for every morsel I toss around the pen. I wish I could catch their antics on camera, but they tend to clam up when they know I am watching 👀

Happiness is receiving a gentle head massage, snuggled warm in your mama's lap, and wrapped up in her cardigan. Hard to imagine Freddy spending his first 5 years of life trapped in a crate with no love, but I'd like to believe we are making up for lost time now.

Thanksgiving leftovers make for very happy animals! Veggie trays become salads and skewers for the outdoor birds and guinea pig, sweet potatoes (not candied or seasoned) go to the parrots, and turkey goes to the pups! The pups might have also gotten a little pumpkin pie 🤫

Freddy is afraid of all men except John. As always, there is no animal that dislikes John. I believe they sense his kind and gentle soul, just like me 💕

Jovie has slept on my shoulder like this nearly every night since she was a tiny chick. Now that she is a big girl, this has become a pretty painful nightly occurrence for me. However, I'll never make her stop because I know a day will come that I won't have this special chicken who finds my shoulder to be the very best roost. I hope that day is VERY far into the future.

Another Sunday, another round of Laundry with Millie. This time she is laying in the warm laundry instead of sleeping in a pile of blankets while I work.

There are two new kids at the Acres! First is Ed, the guinea pig. Ed is approximately 3 years old and was surrendered due to his owners declining health. He is a sweet but skittish little guy who loves to spend the day rearranging his house 🏠 He will live at the adult daycare I am opening, once it's up and running, and will give companionship and purpose to my clients.

Second is Freddy! Freddy is a 4-5 year old former puppy mill breeder who only knew life in a pen until Myles Ahead Animal Sanctuary and Rescue took him in. I am told his white areas were stained yellow from urine and he was a very stinky boy 🤢 His tongue hangs out due to a broken jaw that healed improperly from lack of care, but he is otherwise in surprisingly good health! He is quickly warming up to life in his forever home as well as all of his new siblings. He especially loves the ducks and chickens, but they believe he is the most fearsome monster in the world.

The chickens and ducks are being absolutely spoiled this morning thanks to a generous produce donation from Sugarcreek Bird Farm! Their breakfast was a summer salad of romaine, tomatoes, and white nectarines 🤤

I couldn't figure out why Jovie was fighting sleep. Turns out she just needed some bedtime kisses 🥹

I miss my boy so much it hurts. He was such a huge part of my every day routine and I can't seem to get past the loss. Every time I watered plants, pulled weeds, or cleaned coops, he was right there with me inspecting my work and begging for snacks. He loved to flirt with the girls, but I was always #1. I so admired his resilience after the dog attack and never imagined he would be gone not even a full week later. Now all I can do is visit his grave and bring him pears, just hoping he has forgiven me. Nothing will ever fill the void left by this special rooster.
