Bahati and Frey's Place dba Frey's Place Welcome to Frey's, not just dog daycare but an enrichment center focusing on training/socialization!
(28)

This is dog daycare taken to a whole new level...enrichment is just as important in a canine's daily life as proper veterinary care, nutrition, & exercise is. We believe that to truly offer a well-rounded experience for your dog there must be mental stimulation, reinforced training, & structured/monitored daycare to ensure positive experiences are happening & confidence levels growing!

Wednesday's pack were a bunch of goofs. They were all full of energy and themselves. From jasper having to be the loudest, starbucks trotting like a queen, Cooper not letting go of his favorite ball to oggy an Duffys tornado spins. All in all a great day.

I will no longer refer to myself as a "balanced trainer" 😅 but instead a "multi-quadrant" trainer does that sound better 🤗. Truth is, I think the term "balanced" is used too literally...proper definition in just one way is "counteract, equal, or neutralize the weight/importance of" and if training is consistent, thorough, and with a good trainer it WILL be balanced as you will always use different quadrants that will balance out. Just my opinion 🤪 and thanks to North Yorkshire Dog Training for sharing the original post it's definitely interesting! 🥰 What we must focus on is usage of different quadrants within the LIMA and cynopraxic methodology...as if you focus working in r+ only, many times you may have a dog that is too opportunistic due to no corrections given/too much freedom...but the flip side is if you work in p+ using aversives only with minimal reward the results tend to be a "flat" and inanimated/uninterested dog. So balance is the ultimate goal we should ALL be working towards.

The definition of balanced dog training given by the uneducated suggests punishment and reward in equal measure. Well that's utter tosh.

If anything it's nowhere near balanced, it's heavily skewed on the positive reinforcement side, and describes a trainer that will not discount any method or any tool for the sake of being a cult member.

99% reward based is more of a description. 99% of the time the dog is being rewarded.

Those that say they train with positive only or force free, simply don't know what actually constitutes punishment. As every dog perceives things different. So where a check on the lead is seen by some dogs as punishment so is withholding a treat or reward for others. The dog decides! A good trainer will know what to apply and when!

Real trainers in the real world educate themselves on everything available to them, and apply where or if needed, not simply what suits them, and their membership of any particular club, organisation or cult!

Will DEFINITELY be listening to this discussion after reading the paper...it's about time balanced/more diverse trainers speak out while being able to back their views using the term that is so widely used in the r+/ff training community...."science-based studies" lol...amazing work by some awesome people. While sitting in my hotel room, at Robin MacFarlane's 12 day seminars, I wrote new protocols utilizing an e-collar in combination with Constructional Aggression Treatment, (designed by Dr. Ruiz,) & if life ever slowed down, I had dogs to work with, I'd most DEFINITELY love to use those protocols & study that but until then the full SOPs sit in the depths of my laptop & mind 😅.

Controversy surrounds the efficacy and welfare implications of different forms of dog training with several studies asserting that electronic shock collars have negative welfare impacts while not being more effective than non-aversive methods. However, these studies did not specify the schedule and....

Clients always ask behavioral &/or training questions in the lobby at pick-up/drop-off (which depending on the intensity of the question, I will try to recommend setting up an appointment lol) & today a parent was questioning what to do because her brother is visiting & her dog won't come near him, runs away, is extremely skiddish or altogether is miserable. My answer in short...was nothing. I asked his age again (checking first to see if he was in a behavioral developmental window) and then said, well is he acting aggressive in any type of way? Since the answer was no...I told her simply do nothing because he will adjust on his own when he realizes the new person isn't a threat. By doing nothing, we aren't baiting the dog with food, indirectly rewarding or reinforcing the fear by forcing interaction, or even acknowledging the behavior...we are letting the dog build confidence on his OWN terms by completely ignoring HIM. Using treats/toys can help fast track change but ultimately, it's a lot better for the dog to realize on his own that this person is neutral WITHOUT needing to add distractions like food. Anyways, I wanted to add this because it's hard to answer questions like this at a daycare drop-off & pick-up & I wanted to clarify my explanation to this parent & thought someone else out their might benefit from the advice! 🥰 pic of the goofball just because 😆

We will all think back about the sadness, devastation, shock and loss of this day... and yet, what strength, love, selflessness and courage there was to be witnessed back in 2001. As we move through today, sitting at our jobs, waiting in traffic, caring for our loved ones during the daily routine of life...may all of our own problems be a little more distant in our minds as we remember BOTH human and canine who's lives were altered if present this day...today should be about finding just one good thing in our own lives and giving loving thoughts to all impacted during this event.

When the World Trade Center collapsed on 9/11, nearly 10,000 rescue workers joined in the efforts. Over 300 of those heroes were dogs.

09/11/2024

Well, we were told "no" for two different locations...one because they were worried about the noise because they had a different daycare located there and there was constant noise issues so perhaps we can show them this video of how hard we work with the dogs on their arousal levels with people outside of the fence 🥹...we tried explaining that we're different than a larger volume daycare but alas...still a no 😭.

This is Maria from Frey's here...we started our journey after I retired from a management position at a local animal shelter to open a specialized, smaller-volume dog enrichment & training center to focus on proper social skills, confidence building enrichment activities, & assistance for the owners who wanted the best life/chance for their dogs in a post-COVID world. Here, we have seen so many of our clients grow from puppyhood & on, as most of our clients have been with us since we opened. Our own children have grown up with over 3/4 of our daycare attendees as we have always felt it so important to have children present during positive socialization experiences of humans/dogs, so they have been a part of key activities with the dogs during the day as well! Frey's Place has never been anything but a closely knit dog-loving community where so many events have not only been amazing for the dogs, but also for clients who have met new friends/acquaintances & just got to know us personally because we feel it is important to have that as we're watching their dogs & they should always be comfortable with who they're leaving them with. Our clients have invested so much in us as well, donating toys/snacks for all of the dogs, helping to get our very first 3' deep pool 2 years ago, & even donating their time to help us drive to get our very first 300 sq feet of fencing the first year we opened as when I retired from the shelter we opened Frey's on our own with nothing but a hope, a prayer, & so MANY long hours because it is just the 2 of us & without commercialized backing/loans, etc. Since then we have grown so much from just a tunnel & open space with a mere 5 dogs to now, with play structures, see-through tunnels we created, & 20 dogs per day all because of amazing clients who saw all of the heart we had, the specialized skill set & activities that we would do, & because they gave us a chance.

Prior to growing where I have had to focus primarily on the daycare enrichment center, we've also offered seminars for the community, events/Pack Walk trainings, AKC STAR puppy certification classes, club attendees participated in a local parade to support the LGBTQ+ community, assisted in any behavioral/training needs for rescues/people in the community (I currently hold over 14 certifications with a focus on behavioral training) & supported various places within the community from the Dog Park to the full Christmas Dinner we funded/created/attended for all of the shelter dogs at the Montgomery County Animal Resource Center. 2 years ago we also had our daycare dogs create individualized cards/paintings for a nursing home in the area who asked for humans to write to their tenants who were feeling extra lonely lately. All of these memories, all of the dogs & families who have come into our lives, all of the countless hours of building & growing a place for our smaller daycare in a world of larger commercialized daycares/businesses is all at risk & we are now asking for the community's help...

We were told when we moved in that we could rent our building out for years past the 3 year lease we had signed, but then found out a few weeks ago through a newspaper article that all of the property we're on is supposed to be torn down to be replaced by a chicken restaurant & a Speedway Gas Station leaving Frey's with nowhere to go. We had thought that we had an agreement for a location downtown with a realty company but also found out that they weren't honest/didn't tell us that they "changed their minds" & instead sold it on Friday to someone else...so we are now back to square one. It is so sad because so many smaller businesses are being crushed to make way for larger ones, (including a different dog daycare that recently closed in Centerville area,) leaving no room for us in a commercialized world so we are turning to the community to help us find an affordable location that we can still offer the unique setting/actual certified behavioral & training skills that I have because Loopnet can only do so much & we are all out of ideas...so please, if you know of an area, a building, etc. & could share our posting with that company we would be forever grateful...we are so broken because it hurts worse knowing that our long hours of dedication, love, transparency & guidance to so many families/their dogs may come to a close for lack of location. Thank you for reading this as we don't want to close & become a distant memory, rather, we want to continue to grow & help out as much as we can here in the community...& here are just some memories over the past few years to go along with this post. Have an amazing week everyone!

We hope everyone has an amazing week coming up!

Monday was this beautiful fireballs 1st birthday. Happy birthday miss Jovi. We love being able to watch these guys grow and be apart of it. Miss Jovi got to enjoy "all" of her favorite activities with and without her best friends. Her amazing grandma made these awesome cake pops for all the pups to share and they were an absolute hit. But overall it was a great day and alot of fun.

So first I'd like to say Wednesday's group had an absolute blast with Mike, yes me. Maria seems to think her video was so much better then mine of Tuesday's snowcone fun. But she just doesn't see my vision and that's ok. But if you happen to like this video just a bit more please let her know. Because snowballs in August are just fun. So enjoy...

Every time we have a lot of pool goers, ice parties, etc. Mike uses our machine afterwards to keep everything safe and drier for all of the dogs to play. The dogs are so used to the loud machine they relax, follow him around, or even take naps during that time 😅 thanks Mike for running the machine (even on the hot days) and keeping everyone's play safer!
