This is Wynnie! She is a beautiful 2 year old Double Doodle (Goldendoodle X Australian Labradoodle) and she is looking for her new family. She is spayed and pretty well trained. She loves her crate and is potty trained and she knows basic commands like sit, down etc. but she does need a little bit of reminder training with a few things, but for the most part she is pretty good, for example, she will wait patiently with her food bowl in front of her waiting for permission to eat it 🙂 She does not resource guard and loves to play (fetch is a favorite) and loves cuddle time. I wanted to pass along a link to a website that may be of interest and benefit to many of you out there who are in the same position as me with the cost of their medications. Once I totally retired, happened recently, and I no longer had the benefit of great Health Insurance due to my union, I found that my medication was extremely high. Something to read and know about if you are a dog owner. Thought I would try posting information that would be of use to all dog owners. Starting with this first post and information about something that is not well know but very serious. I am going to try posting something every month that will be of some value but do notice that I have said I will TRY. Please read, this could safe your dogs life. I experienced the Salmon Poisoning with one of my dogs as a kid and have never forgotten about the dangers.
Salmon poisoning disease is a potentially fatal condition seen in only dogs after they eat certain types of raw fish, like salmon and other anadromous fish (fish that swim upstream to breed), that are infected with a parasite called Nanophyetus salmincola.
The parasite is relatively harmless except when it is infected with a rickettsial organism called Neorickettsia helminthoeca. It’s this microorganism that causes salmon poisoning.
Salmon poisoning occurs most commonly west of the Cascade Mountain range.
What are the signs of salmon poisoning disease?
Clinical signs generally appear within six days of a dog eating an infected fish. Common symptoms include:
Vomiting
Lack of appetite
Fever
Diarrhea
Weakness
Swollen lymph nodes
Dehydration
Salmon poisoning is treatable if it’s caught in time. If untreated, death usually occurs within two weeks of eating the infected fish. Ninety percent of dogs showing symptoms die without treatment.
